In a PR move that’s so petty and brutal we are forced to admire it, Netflix released the teaser for the upcoming Harry & Meghan documentary in the middle of both a palace racism scandal and William and Kate’s U.S. tour.
As always with M&H, their willingness to engage in extreme displays of affection and to reveal their own personal struggles is what makes them so unusual as a royal couple. They left royal life for a lot of well-documented reasons (which are about to be further documented, it seems), but at the heart of it, they wanted to be able to live their lives on their terms, which means the family mantra of “Never complain, never explain” never worked for them. They’re carving out an interesting hybrid life of royalty and standard Hollywood celebrity. It’s not a mixture that works well, which is why they’ve both struggled a bit to find their footing post-exit. We’ll watch this, of course, but once again, we have to say that we wish they’d move past their grievances (even if they’re earned). Between this and Harry’s upcoming memoir, we’ll be treated to another full year of them talking about their time as royals. That’s their prerogative, but we think the returns will diminish with each project. They’re much better off focusing on their charity work and their advocacy. They’re both really good at that.
In an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share the other side of their high-profile love story. Across six episodes, the series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution. With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other. From the critically-acclaimed, two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus, Harry & Meghan is a never-before-seen look at one of the most-discussed couples in history.
