Anya Taylor-Joy hit the red carpet for the LA premiere of The Northman working a retro look. Normally, that would mean something like a ’60s-inspired mini-dress or a ’70s-inspired disco dress or maybe even an ’80s-inspired power suit. But Miss Anya doesn’t do her fashion in half-measures, so when we say she went retro, we mean circa 1580 or so.
The dress is 21st Century minimalism, but that collar is straight of the Elizabethan era. We ADORE the collar and would love to see more of that kind of old-school embellishment on modern designs, but we have to be honest and note that it looks its best from the front. When you look at it from the side, it just feels like it’s sitting on top of the dress rather than an integrated element. We love the braid, but it feels like the jewelry doesn’t coordinated particularly well with the dress. Still, it’s a really striking look overall and she’s probably the best celebrity to snag this dress first since she’s well suited to it.
