Gemma Chan in Louis Vuitton at the “Eternals” Los Angeles Premiere

We have no problem admitting that when we were deep in the bowels of 2020 lockdown, the thought of Gemma Chan someday stepping out on a real red carpet in high fashion for the premiere of The Eternals sustained us during our darker moments. We think we mentioned it on our podcast a half dozen times. We knew there would be other red carpet moments to come; that the Met Gala would return and that the major awards ceremonies would try not to be too virtual, but for whatever reasons, Gemma Chan’s turn on a Disney-scale promotional tour seemed like the one shining light to hope for when all of that shit was someday behind us. Well, the shit’s not entirely as behind us as we once hoped, but at least the most important thing came true.

We just wish it could have lived up to the (probably completely unrealistic) expectations we had for it. Lorenzo likes this a bit more than Tom does. It’s dramatic, to be sure. And it’s hard to make her look bad. But this is sort of outrageously overdesigned (something of a Louis Vuitton trademark these days, unfortunately), and it looks too much like a fucked-up wedding gown design. We LOVE that she opted for a cape because we’re all about her claiming her queendom, but the dress is just a mish-mash of elements. There are so many better dresses out there for you, Gemma.
