Met Gala 2021: Lupita Nyong’o in Atelier Versace

Can we just? Stop here for a second? Press pause? Take a mo? Because…

LUPITA MOTHERFUCKIN NYONG’O IS SERVING A LOOK ON A MET GALA RED CARPET.

And it’s not a retrospective! Or a virtual appearance! It is literally Lupita Nyong’o, standing on a red carpet, wearing a Versace gown, AT THE DAMN MET GALA. And she looks SPECTACULAR.

Okay, maybe that last bit isn’t necessarily all that notable because she tends to look spectacular most times she’s on a red carpet, but oh, kittens. We have been SO LONG in the desert.

The deets: The Costume Institute exhibition (and thus the nominal theme of the event) was America: A Lexicon of Fashion. As with every Met Gala, there were wide and varied interpretations of the theme, not to mention a plurality of attendees who seem not to have paid attention to it at all. Lupita and Versace settled on denim to represent American fashion (they weren’t the only ones) and this may be the most gorgeous and elegant denim gown we’ve ever seen. It helps when you’re festooned with diamonds and sporting an absolutely gorgeous cloud of hair (which was inspired by the work of artist Lorna Simpson, which pays homage to and reimagines the context of Black women’s hair in culture.

Just a stunning look all around and we thank this goddess for these blessings. We didn’t realize how parched we were.
