An observation we keep returning to in our coverage this year is the idea of the Grammys as the ultimate visual branding exercise in entertainment. Pop stars are different from actors in that they want to promote their own image as consistently as possible and their fashion choices are much more akin to stagewear than style. No one blurs that line more than Billie Eilish, who was supplied with a little eye of the tiger action courtesy of Gucci.
We’ve talked a lot about how impressive it is that she can get any designer she wants to move completely away from their own house’s current aesthetic in order to give her the custom pieces that meet her specifications. She is astonishingly consistent in her public style and while we think she may eventually have to ditch this silhouette and style in order to stay viable as a pop artist, we can’t help but love it for now. Why? Because it’s pure, believe it or not. It’s high quality custom high fashion that was made entirely to her specifications in order to illustrate who she is at the moment and what’s driving her art. This is so much more expressive than picking a dress from a pile of luxury goods.
And in case you think we’re overstating the whole pureness and consistency argument:
In real-world fashion, we might advise someone (if they asked, of course) to stay away from wearing the same outfit in different colors all the time. For a pop star, it’s just excellent branding. And in Billie Eilish’s case, it’s highly personal as well. There’s simply no way for us to reasonably critique this using conventional style criteria.
