Venice Film Festival: Tilda Swinton in Chanel Couture at “The Human Voice” Premiere

Posted on September 04, 2020

Ah, there she is. There’s our Fashion Pontiff. She’s been keeping her fashion mostly low-profile and semi-casual for most of the week – which was fine, because times are weird and like everyone else, she’s probably just trying to figure out how things work in the current reality. But we won’t deny our hearts were crying out for some primo Pope Tilda style and that disappointing Chanel couture look just wasn’t doing it for us. Where’s the drama? The sense of regalness? The vague sense of androgyny? As we said, there she is:

In truth, we wouldn’t rate this dress high on the list of Pope Tilda looks. It’s pretty enough, but it looks a bit heavy for early September and if you take it on its own, it can be a bit conservative and traditional; two words we never like to use when discussing the Pontiff’s choices. But the stratospheric hair, bizarrely beautiful mask and a pair of shoes fit for Louis XVI all combine to take this look somewhere that’s specifically and idiosyncratically Tilda. Only her, in other words. No one else could make this combo work quite so well.
