Emmy Awards 2020: Issa Rae in Sergio Hudson

Issa Rae didn’t snag the trophy, but she sure as hell made an impression in the short glimpse of her we got during the Emmys broadcast. Maybe that was the thinking behind this gown choice: give the audience as much visual bang for the buck (so to speak) as you can pull off in a few seconds, without a red carpet.

She and the Insecure crew were having a party as SoFi Stadium, hence the slightly distracting backdrop. We love this dress – mostly. It’s got a sort of ’40s retro, film noir femme fatale feel to it, except it’s rendered in the boldest, brightest color possible. That orange is a tough shade to work, but she’s crushing it. Love the silhouette and the button-loop motif. We don’t mind the midriff cutout (it’s pretty on-point for your average film noir femme fatale), but it seems like it might be sitting too high on her or is perhaps a little too large for the design. Something’s not quite working for us there. What IS working for us: the insanely gorgeous hair and stunning earrings. It’s interesting she kept a relatively clean face, but we think it was a savvy move. Between the bright orange color, the sparkle of the diamonds and the drop-dead hair, there’s more than enough going on here. Girlfriend didn’t need a smokey eye or strong lip to complete the picture.
