We’ve finally got a trailer to go with those promo shots and we are not feeling all that assured by it.

Okay, that looks … confused. About what it wants to be. Why are we hearing “Hey Big Spender” from Sweet Charity? What does that have to do with what looks like a fairly cliched “psycho nurse” story? We feel the same as we did when we saw some of the first-look promo shots: this is extremely stylized – take American Horror Story, Feud, Hollywood, and The Politician and put them in a blender with an 8-ball of cocaine – for a character who was never presented in a stylized way. This all looks like Hitchcock shot through an MGM musical lens and that is not what comes to mind when you think of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or any of the characters introduced in it. It seems to us Murphy simply took the vernacular meaning of “Nurse Ratched,” which has become a sort of catch-all name for any officious or stern healthcare worker and simply built another of his big gay productions around it. As we said before, we have no doubt Sarah Paulson will be great in the role and it’s never a bad thing to see Judy Davis sink her teeth into something, but this trailer just reaffirms what we said in the last post: Ryan Murphy’s back on his bullshit and we think this may be another confusing morass of camp and stunning visuals.

From Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, RATCHED is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched. In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.

RATCHED was inspired by the iconic and unforgettable character of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and was created by Evan Romansky. The series stars Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched, Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs, Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket, Sharon Stone as Lenore Osgood, Jon Jon Briones as Dr. Richard Hanover, Finn Wittrock as Edmund Tolleson, Charlie Carver as Huck, Alice Englert as Dolly, Amanda Plummer as Louise, Corey Stoll as Charles Wainwright, Sophie Okonedo as Charlotte Wells, Brandon Flynn as Henry Osgood and Vincent D’Onofrio as Gov. George Wilburn. The series is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Sarah Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epste.

The 8 episode series premieres on Netflix on Friday, September 18.
