Darlings, it’s true that we’re all perhaps a bit stressed, anxious and possibly even depressed at the moment, which means maybe you should take the following reaction with a grain of salt, given how ravenous we are for anything to distract us or entertain us, but…

HOLY MARY MOTHER OF PEARL INJECT ALL OF THIS INTO OUR VEINS NOW RIGHT NOW DAMMIT

‘The Great’ is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Season One is a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter. Incorporating historical facts occasionally, the series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

SWEET JESUS YES.

‘The Great’ premieres May 15 on Hulu.

WHAT? NO NO NO. We need this NOW, HULU.

The costumes look appropriately stunning and this all looks like one of the most expensive projects Hulu’s ever produced. We get that some might bristle at the anachronistic style, but films like The Favourite proved that you can interpret history wildly while still being somewhat faithful to it, so long as you really lean into that interpretation and make it as obviously ahistoric as possible at times. Kirsten Dunst’s Marie Antoinette film did the same thing, to great, stylish effect. Nicholas Hoult looks absolutely hilarious here. He’s at his best when he gets to poke at the ridiculousness of his good looks. It looks like Elle’s holding her own, but it’ll be interesting to see her go for broad comedy this way. We are TOTALLY on board for this one, but we really hope Hulu bumps up that premiere date, for the good of civilization.
