Netflix is going all-in on the big drops today. The final trailer for the final season of Orange is the New Black has been released and to our way of thinking, it opens up a lot of questions about whether or not this show is even capable of an ending. Or whether it should even attempt one, for that matter.
This was always going to be the problem with Orange is the New Black. An ending was built into the story. There is a certain expectation that the ending of the series should be truthful about the realities of the prison system. That would mean, by definition, that any ending aiming for truthfulness would have to be a fairly downbeat if not outright depressing ending. People don’t generally like their television series to end that way and this show in particular has engendered a rabid (at one time, anyway) fanbase who identify with and support the characters of the show. In other words, people who are likely to be furious about a downbeat ending. The show is sentimental to a fault and has always returned to a life-affirming take on sisterhood and empowerment, but we don’t know how it’s going to manage to effectively thread that needle and give us a satisfying ending.
We know this: we’re curious to see. We skipped out on most of the last season, but we feel compelled to come back and see these characters off. We really did love them for a time.
