Style File: “Tolkien” Stars Lily Collins and Nicholas Hoult Run the Style Gamut

On the left: film festival style! On the right: LA premiere style! Can you spot the differences? Or are you too distracted by Nicholas’ HORRIBLE grooming? Let’s take a closer look and see!

Lily Collins and Nicholas Hoult at the Montclair Film Festival “Tolkien” Screening

Here we have two very pretty people in two very nice casually stylish looks appropriate for a film festival screening. What we also have is two people not playing to their strengths. Oh, they’re both fine. Truly. We can’t find a thing wrong with either outfit. It’s just that neither look strikes us as their style sweet spot. Not a crime, of course. They’re both pretty enough that they can make just about any style work on some level. But his look especially doesn’t seem to us to be the best one for promo work; not for someone who looks so good in slightly more stylish outfits. What we’re saying here is that this is pretty much normcore on the red carpet.

Whereas all of this is exactly right for them. Give these two some high-fashion pastels to work and they come alive. We LOVE his matching pink kicks and her top’s spin on the classic tuxedo shirt. We love how well coordinate they are (for both of these appearances). We love how her hair coordinates with her belt.

We hate his hair and whiskers, though. Clean that shit up, sir. You two look almost perfect and you’re ruining it.
