Behold the Queen of High Camp. But not because she’s dressed like a Ziegfeld Follies showgirl. That’s just the campy icing on the camp cake.

Céline Dion may be one of the most purely campy celebrities we have left, in an era where our celebrities are far too self-promoting and image-focused to truly be campy. She mentioned in a red carpet interview that she didn’t even know what camp was when she was told about the theme. We think that may have been a bit of play-acting because the woman’s been around long enough to know that very quality has been ascribed to her countless times over. But true camp comes from those moments when the person at the center of it isn’t necessarily trying to be campy. We’d argue that her iconic backwards white tuxedo and fedora from the ’99 Oscars was infinitely more campy than this, but she’s having real fun with the moment and indulging in the exuberance of the theme. Showgirl drag isn’t inherently campy. Céline Dion is.
