It didn’t occur to us until just now that we should have been anticipating Steffi’s next style evolution now that the awards-campaigning for A Star is Born is behind her. In a way, we’re glad the thought of making predictions about such things never crossed our minds, because in all honesty, we’d never have landed on this:
“Alexis Carrington Colby goes leather” never even occurred to us – and we’re glad for that because this is pretty awful. It’s like Rodarte took Joan Cusack’s two deathless lines from her critique of Melanie Griffith’s dress in Working Girl (“$6000 dollars? It’s not even leathuh!” and “Needs some bows or something”) and heard a design brief.
It’s not impossible to edit, however. Two things leather should never be rendered in: ruffles and bows. Remove the bow, remove the sleeves, keep the peplum, lose the window valance on the skirt (the V shape is AWFUL), and you’d have … a somewhat boring leather dress, we admit. We won’t say that we’d prefer boring over weird – not for her, anyway – but we really hate almost all the white parts here.
