Pop Style Opinionfest: Golden Globes, Period Dramas and Movie Talk

Kittens, we’ve got some juicy ones for you this week. Topics, that is. First, because we are … well… who we are, we tuck into the Golden Globes, not just giving an overview of the red carpet efforts as a whole, but how they stacked up against last year’s #TimesUp dress blackout and whether there was a collective response to it this year. Also a review of the hosts and the ceremony itself, all of which seemed determined to not offend anyone.

Continuing the reviewing theme, the back half of the podcast was turned over to two very late reviews on two of the year’s most discussed films.

Here’s your pull quote, Rotten Tomatoes: “Adam McKay’s Vice is an energetic and entertaining look at the pursuit of power, with a stunning performance by Amy Adams and a masterful technical performance by Christian Bale, but overall, the film’s a mess and doesn’t know what it wants to say about the topics it raises.”

Another one: “Easily one of the best films of the year, Marielle Heller’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? sports career-best performances from Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant in a tender, biting, funny story about middle-aged failure and bitterness.”

But of course, you’ll have to listen to get all our gushing/critiques.

And somewhere in the middle, we tackle the latest controversy to arise out of the world of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Game-player Supreme Manila Luzon posted this:

Ru said my ORIGINAL Curves & Swerves Runway look was in “bad taste” and production told me to wear my back up. I was really looking forward to wearing this gown that I think celebrates a perfectly normal human experience! Many of my fans are young women who may feel pressured by society to be embarrassed by periods. It’s empowering to teach young women about their bodies, encourage them to celebrate them AND to question people who tell them not to! My goal with this look was to normalize menstruation by looking sick’ning even if I was on my period! Instead, i decided to wear the beautiful quilted dress you saw in the episode because it is not my show, it’s Ru’s. But because of Ru, I have my very own platform to speak for myself and show you all my interpretation! ❤️ my Period Gown is by @theladyhyde

And everyone had to go and form opinions on it, us included. Basically, everyone’s being a drama queen and Manila’s a crafty bitch.

Film, television, celebrities, and drag, darlings. Isn’t this what you come here for? Isn’t this what life’s all about?
