Cathy Cambridge WERQs That Royal Drag in Alexander McQueen at the State Banquet

Posted on October 24, 2018

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge walks with Rear Admiral Ludger Brummelaar during a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace on October 23, 2018 in London, United Kingdom. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands accompanied by Queen Maxima are staying at Buckingham Palace during their two day stay in the UK.

Like she was born to the role:

Also: DAMN, lady. You been working out?

We’ve said this in the last few times we discussed royal fashion on our podcast: something about that third pregnancy coinciding with the arrival of her new sister-in-law seems to have spurred a recent strengthening and tightening up of Cathy’s royal image through the use of fashion. People get a little upset if the sisters-in-law get compared to each other too much, but Meghan’s arrival has thrown Cathy into high relief, so to speak. And one thing that’s come across in the last year or so of appearances is a newfound stature and confidence in her role, something Meghan doesn’t have yet, for very obvious and understandable reasons.  In other words, in the last year or so, Cathy’s fashion went from socialite style to full-on royal drag. She looks like a queen now because she looks utterly comfortable wearing the trappings. Of course a good deal of this may just come down to the confidence that comes as you mature, which means it’s going to be interesting seeing Cathy’s image evolve past any comparable image of Diana as she grows older than Diana ever was.

The dress? Gorgeously appropriate. It would be okay enough on a red carpet premiere somewhere, but the style and color make it feel distinctly royal. Or maybe that’s just coming from her.
