Taylor Schilling at LAX

Posted on August 15, 2014

You know a budding star has really made it when they walk through an airport looking this put together.

And you know they’re still new to the game when they grin at the photographers they’ll find annoying in a year or two (and if they become really big stars, start punching a year or two after that).

This is adorable, we have to say. She looks like a ’90s art college student coming home for the holidays. And yet it feels really modern, in an Annie Hall redux sort of way. That jacket (?) is a little odd, which forces us to keep peering at it to try to figure it out. That’s not a bad thing when you’re dressing for cameras, as she clearly is. The trick for the LAX pap shot is to give them something worth photographing while not looking like you’re trying too hard. We’d say she nailed it -and stuck to her own slightly butch style, to boot.

I like the outfit but I also like that her hair is not to perfect. Makes her seem more “normal”. And I want those shades!

    • Leah Elzinga

I’ll rock-paper-scissors-lizard-spock you for the shades.

    • Salasalu

Three way! (rock paper scissors, i mean)

    • Guest

She is normal. She is a young person that chose to become an actress and landed a role in a show that blew up and became huge. But she is a normal person.

      • Denise Alden

        Thanks for the subtitles.

  • RussellH88

I keep seeing Chloe. Like, this is something that Chloe should be wearing.

But she does look good, it’s fun and quirky.

  • fursa_saida

I think it’s more of a pullover, almost like a sweatshirt. I like this a lot, but somehow the shoes look a little geriatric to me. I feel like there’s a sharp Oxford waiting to shine in their place.

  • mommyca

it looks more like a sweater instead of a jacket, could that be?

    • conniemd

It looks like a thinnish sweatshirt to me, but yeah, not a jacket.

  • sugarkane105

This outfit is so far outside my own style preference that I feel I can’t even judge it fairly. But I think she looks ridiculous.

    • Thomas

See, this is so my style. I guess I’m a hipster then. But I go to one of the most liberal art schools in the country. I love the sweatshirt. Some people might think it’s ugly, but I think it’s interesting. I like that it’s avant garde and kind of edgy. I like how she paired everything too. I love the shades.

      • sugarkane105

I think I’m more of a prep myself. The sweatshirt and the shades actually don’t bother me, it’s mostly the lower half I find really unflattering. I’d probably pair the sweatshirt with some jeans (of the non-balloony variety) and low-top sneakers. I’d tuck in the collar of the shirt too, or lose it altogether.

        • kimmeister

It’s the sweatpant hem of the pants that is killing me.

          • Thomas

That’s the one thing about the look that I don’t like, but I love the rest!

    • DuBey2

no sweatshirt looks good to me. ever. no matter what.

  • Dany

I really like this. It’s kinda 60’s, kinda 90’s, kinda wow!

However, in the fourth picture her hair is attacking her and she looks like Renee

  • hughman

The sweatshirt is Givenchy so this hypothetical Art Student isn’t going to RISD on a scholarship.

    • Thomas

      Trust fund art student realness

  • bananafish

Love the look and that she actually looks like she just got off an airplane. Accessible-chic.

  • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

Call me old fashioned but I can’t with the nude-colored sunglass frames.

    • Grumpy Girl

Yes, I had to peer closely to see about the wierd indent on her skin–to realize it was the frame.

  • sutton

In the first picture she looks like Diane Kruger, and this is something Diane would wear too I think. Taylor looks good, she is obviously trying but not too hard.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Adorbs. I don’t love anything she’s wearing from a personal preference standpoint, but she looks put together and chic.

  • In_Stitches

On the spectrum of sexy vs. cool, this is 100% cool with no sexiness at all. it’s a total Be Me look. It’s not up my alley, but kudos to her for working it.

  • @Biting Panda

Yeah, I have to get drunk to fly too, Taylor.

  • Anna

Not crazy about the shades, but I love the outfit. In fact, I like this more than most of her red carpet looks.

  • sienna elm

Not a big fan of the cuffed jogging pant.

    • whaddami

      Amen!

    • R.A.

And I am the weirdo who loves them!

  • LeelaST

Celeb stylists need to realize that not everyone can wear every frame style. Add to that the very dark lenses and light frames – they were chosen to match the top, not compliment her face.

  • Yoshio

I like this look a lot. It’s interesting without being precious or pretentious.

  • formerlyAnon

it feels really modern, in an Annie Hall redux sort of way

I was trying to figure what I thought about this before reading, and then BAM! You absolutely nailed it.

[reason #673 why you guys run a successful blog]

  • Denise Rambo

Could she RUN a comb through her hair? I mean really …

    • Constant Reader

I get the feeling this is one of those 30-minute hairdos designed to look slept in.

      • Denise Rambo

        To me – that isn’t a hairdo – it’s laziness.

        • Constant Reader

What I meant was, it probably took 30 minutes to make her look that lazy. More’s the pity.

  • teensmom99

This makes me wonder how Uzo dresses at the airport. A girl can dream.

  • frannyprof

Her new stylist is making magic!

  • marlie

I don’t like anything she’s wearing, yet I think this is a cute travel look for her.

  • MilaXX

It’s a bit hipster geek chic, but it works for her.

  • what not

It’s ’90s because the ’90s are trendy right now, and everything she’s got on is on-trend: florals with a twist, printed sweatshirt, contrast collar and cuffs, formal slim-cut sweat pants, oxfords. It’s a decent look, but yeah, allll the trendy pieces at once.

    • Constant Reader

I think that’s my problem with it — well, also the fact that formal slim-cut sweatpants should not be a thing. A pair of skinny jeans would have brought this into a cute casual look for me and toned down the trendiness.

      • kimmeister

I’m with you on the sweatpants. Recently, a coworker who always wants my fashion help made reference to her “fancy sweatpants.” I informed her, in no uncertain terms, that such a thing does not exist.

        • Ali2044

Yes, preach. If the occasion is fancy enough for “fancy sweatpants” just wear regular pants. No one is going to look at your $300 fleece monstrosities and think you just have a sharp, ironic laid back style. They’re going to think you barely bothered to brush the Cheeto dust off your lap before your rolled out the door.

  • Constant Reader

I’m sorry, I just can’t love this. I think it’s the pants with the ankle cuff that matches the cuffs on the jacket. It brings it into upscale tracksuit territory.

    • BLauDGaspode

That’s what I kept thinking too. The cuff on the pants just ruins everything.

  • Starts with K

Shot #4 looks like she’s practicing putting on her safety belt.

  • FibonacciSequins

I don’t think that’s a jacket. I don’t think I like that it’s so hard to figure out what it is.

  • R.A.

I think I might need those pants.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Better this than skin-tight leather pants for air travel, but still, those pants are a big no.

  • Jennifer Schiller

I love this despite truly hating the sweatshirt pattern. That’s the definition of working a style.

  • fooepi

Pap shot sounds to close to pap smear for my ears. I think my definition of “put together” is different. I think she looks messy.

  • KT

I actually think this looks just slightly too try-hard. Weirdly I think the sunglasses are just a bridge too far, especially when combined with all the other quirky/hipster pieces here. But overall this is pretty cute.
