Sarah Paulson in Alice by Temperley in New York

Posted on August 07, 2014

We feel like the only people who can get away with that kind of top half are dancers in rehearsal.

Sarah-Paulson-GOTS-Alice-By-Temperley-GOTS-NYC (1)Sarah Paulson is spotted leaving her hotel in New York City in an Alice by Temperley ‘Phoenix’ skirt paired with a black top and Rupert Sanderson ‘Elba’ pumps.

That’s not a skirt that called for a bodysuit. They don’t really go all that well together. And that bag flat out clashes.  It’s funny, but we were going to start off by saying it’s not a bad look overall, but it really is. There’s not one aspect we like.

Agree/disagree? We just think that skirt is pretty ugly and that top isn’t helping. Plus the severe hair isn’t doing great things for her. Basically, she looks like a crazy dance teacher.

    She scares me.

    • FuhUgh

      • RoseJB

        That’s one deranged duck.

  • Jessica Freeman

A boat neck top would have changed this look for the better.

  • Noah

Disagree. I actually think this is a personal best for her. Granted, that’s not a high bar, and I’m mostly just relieved that she’s stopped wearing skirts that cut off just above the ankles.

    • lundibleu

I don’t particularly like the look, but it looks so much better than other things we’ve seen her in recently that I almost like it – if you know what I mean.

      • KateNJones

        I just got

    • Snailstsichr

I’m always a little afraid to open a post with her name on it. For her, this isn’t terrible.

    • demidaemon

      Exactly what I said!

    • EditKitten

I agree with you. Plus, the look on her face says she’s clearly comfortable and digging herself in it. She looks chic!

    • scoobynacks

If this is a personal best, my gawd how bad has she been? I mean I have always had issues with the hair, but the top looks, as TLo said, like dancer at a rehearsal and the bottom is very ‘Liberace’s wallpaper.’

  • lunchcoma

That skirt is pure Christmas party, so there’s no way I can approve of it in August. It might have been tolerable in season and with a top more like the one worn by the model.

    • Sarah

      • lunchcoma

Apparently gold sequins have a unifying effect on people!

    • FibonacciSequins

It reminds me of a Christmas party dress I bought at Saks in 1989.

    • dprades

Totally office Christmas party. Just swap out the the top for a cashmere cardigan, and it’s aughts-era Ann Taylor

    • luludexter

The fabric just looks so heavy – too heavy for a fuller skirt. and yeah there’s that Xmas thing too…

  • RussellH88

She looks a little Lana Bananas.

  • Sarah

It’s 1980’s Snap Crotch Christmas Party.

    • Sam Smith

Those were the worst, and always a major pain when drunk and trying to use the potty.

    • The words “Snap Crotch” give me war flashbacks to first grade, when my mom let me go to school in a snap crotch leotard. I was in the bathroom, struggling with the snaps, and I guess I didn’t lock the door when I went in. The cute boy in class walked right in on me. I vowed then and there to never wear or even speak the words snap crotch again.

      • Sarah

Terribly sorry. I had a similar instance wherein my gym shirt was pulled up OVER my (bra-less) head by the gym teacher when I lost my grip on the parallel bars in seventh grade co-ed gym class. Of course the boy I liked best was RIGHT IN FRONT. Nothing like being the first non-family boobies about twenty eleven year-olds have ever seen…

  • Missy

I’m sorry Sarah Paulson, but they cancelled Smash! It’s a little late to dress like you’re part of the cast now.

  • Nikko Viquiera

Disagree! I think this is New York fabulous!

  • JauntyJohn

Skirt’s too high… and the right necklace might have helped a lot. **Might have.**

Not crazy about it overall, but she seems to feel good about how she looks, so if this is working at all it’s due to that.

    • Shawn EH

And maybe “crazy dance teacher” is like the inner character she’s channeling for the day. When I have one, it’s often Bette Davis.

    • myandyleigh

I think her overall happy demeanor here is due to the fact that she burned the torture devices disguised as shoes she wore to ComicCon (two pairs of the exact same shoe in different colors) and then ran barefoot to purchase these obviously much more comfortable pumps.

It’s the little things that mean so much.

  • FibonacciSequins

That top and skirt don’t go together at all. It’s like she tried to copy what the model’s wearing, but all she had was a leotard.

Worse is her flat-ironed hair. Not a good look for her.

    • Kitten Mittons

I don’t care for severe styling on her, in general.

  • Synnae

Considering what she has looked like before, this is seriously good. Which in itself is terrifying.
I like everybody above the collarbones and below the knees so she can keep that, and just dump that X-mas wrapper skirt.

  • It’s all or nothing with her. isn’t it? Fierce bitchface or a beautiful, engaging smile. I must know her secret.

  • Mothra

Foot tattoos. Why do people DO THAT?! It never looks good, and it really hurts to get a tat there.

  • Kate Andrews

For her, it’s halfway decent. But that bar is set so low it’s on the floor.

  • Capt. Renault

Even when she’s smiling, I still feel I need to back away slowly. Maybe even more so than usual.

  • deelup

I can’t figure out why she can’t ever put a decent look together.

  • LuluBI

Ugh. The Danskin bodysuit never looks good. Plus, the skirt looks totally holiday.

    • MilaXX

I think because it’s a Fall skirt that the stylist tried to make into a Summer look.

  • MarissaLG

I think it’s nice. I would have added a delicate gold necklace and gone full-ballerina with a simple top knot.

  • Anna

SHE IS SMILING IN THE SECOND PHOTO. Honestly, I haven’t seen her look cute in anything since her Down With Love costumes so I’m giving this a thumbs up.

  • MilaXX

It’s bad but still 100% better than the sister wife looks she usually wears.

  • Lisalady161

I personally like the whole look. It’s just too heavy for August and too dark for daytime. I know everyone’s already said this but, compared to how she’s dress before she looks fab.

  • J.W.

Why are there so many high-waisted skirts out and about? Not many people look really good in them…

    • Grumpy Girl

Is this skirt really high-waisted, or does the giant scoop in the top make it look higher than it is–along with the unattractive gathering? I’m thinking this is hitting her at the waist? But I have some bad 80s tendencies so I may need some education.

      • J.W.

You may be right about the giant scoop…

    • kimmeister

Those of us long waisted gals who look awesome in them are thrilled that they are out and about for purchase.

      • J.W.

Then they are made for you!

        • kimmeister

But you’re right in that many people attempt them who shouldn’t. One short waisted friend of mine tried, only to discover that it basically came up to her boobs.

  • Grumpy Girl

Aside from the already-stated unseasonableness (seasonality?) of the outfit, her makeup is suboptimal, so that the brows, blush and lips are too dark and the skin looks sallow. Seems a heavy handed application of the wrong season’s tones.

    • Shawn EH

I get it now! Martha Graham biography audition!

  • Gatto Nero

The skirt *almost* works on the model, with the patterned hose, great shoes, and coat. But with a leotard and basic pumps, not so much.
The clutch doesn’t go at all.
    She looks pleased, though.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

    It sucks less than normal.

  • Nancer

Wow, guys, I was going to say that for her, this is a personal best! It’s a bit unseasonal, but overall I like the look on her. So much better that some of the wafty dress/tablecloths that she normally favors. And I LIKE the bodysuit look! It’s sleek. Do I have quibbles? Of course. I wouldn’t be a bitter kitten if I didn’t. Still, considering the source, I like it.

    • BobStPaul

Totally agree. My first impression was “personal best.”

  • Kitten Mittons

Anyone remember that MAD TV recurring sketch for that dating service, “Lowered Expectations” ?
That theme song is usually what I hear in my head when I see a Sarah Paulson post. By SP standards, it’s….decent? I guess?

    • kimmeister

I do! All we need is a pose next to a chain-link fence.

  • hughman

Very Anne Bancroft in “The Turning Point”.

    • Shawn EH

Which is preferable to Shirley MaClaine, right?

  • Radish

That is a damn holiday skirt, girl.

  • traceyishere

    I like it, so there.

  • carnush

I think the makeup and hair are very pretty. The outfit is a miss.

  • Wink

This will look a little better in October/November, but not much.

  • Trishington

I hope she was on her way to audition for a role as a crazy dance teacher, otherwise I feel kind of sorry for her here. And that hair is abominable. Center parts are just not very flattering.

  • teensmom99

I don’t disagree except I think it might be a personal best.

  • I really wanted to like this, she is so charming and funny in interviews and whatnot. I like her so much but, she has such an innate capacity to underwhelm with her sartorial choices. You can do so much better! That said, it is one of her better looks, which is kinda sad.

She needs a new stylist stat.

  • moxie_lady

I totally disagree, I think she looks chic and classy.

  • LibKat

I agree that this is almost a personal best for her, better top and purse would have put her over the top. I like the hair and her makeup is good except for a skosh too much blush. Love the lip color on her.

  • marlie

The bag is ugly AND it doesn’t go. I would like the top if it fit her the way it fits the model. I don’t dislike the skirt, but the whole thing seems a little “holiday party” to me.

And I think her makeup and hair look good (and facial expression); way less severe than usual.

  • Imasewsure

Thought I was going to love it from the thumbnail but I agree that none of it is working

  • SugarSnap108

Only 1980s Debbie Allen could pull off that top.

  • AlexisPayne

I kind of like it, I feel like if I saw her at a party I’d be a little envious of the ensemble.

  • revlyn

    She’s smiling this time!

  • crash1212

I thought I was going to like it from the thumbnail only because it didn’t look like it was her typical “sister wife” get up….come to find out there is a dancer in rehearsal version of sister wife. She always gets is wrong…poor thing.

  • MartyBellerMask

Wow, I really disagree. I think she looks great. In fact I was wondering if she hired a (new?) stylist. She seems more put together than usual.

  • Lily

Thank you for mentioning the hair. I can’t stop staring at the wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide part.

  • Sherilyne Cox

I wondered what had happened to my old shower curtain. Good times.

  • Kate4queen

I love that neckline myself but the two things here don’t go together at all.

  • bookish

    I love the skirt, but I’m a sucker for a black/gold combo.

  • alyce1213

I disagree. I have no problem with a classic scoop neck top. I think she looks just fine. Maybe a little off-season, but fine.

  • She’s on my irrational hate list and I don’t even know who she is or what she’s been in. She just always looks so smug and prissy. The tryhard Audrey Hepburn knock-off looks don’t help, nor the flat-ironed to death hair. This is a lady that could use some bangs and soft waves.

  • Belvane

Huh. I was just thinking she looked surprisingly good.

  • Lori

The outfit is pretty bad, but it’s not eye-searing so for her it’s a personal best, or pretty close to it. She has such bad taste and always looks so terrible that I’ve pretty well lost the ability to judge her clothing rationally.

  • GeoDiva

For her this is a win.

  • EEKstl

Yeah, it’s Danskin 1973 up top and Las Vegas hotel upholstery fabric on the bottom.

  • evave2

This is the first shot of her you guys have had this summer where she doesn’t look like she wants to gnaw on somebody’s leg, so that’s a plus.

The skirt looks wintry, not even Christmas-y, like it should be worn in January.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I love that kind of top…I have one in black and I wear it to death. Yes it makes me look like a dancer, but there are worse things than that. I feel like Audrey Hepurn.

  • OffToSeeHim

I think she looks pretty. Nice and casual.

  • yayito83

I agree with your first comment but i actually think she looks great

  • what not

This is a woman who would benefit from bangs.

  • quiltrx

I don’t particularly like anything about this look–but, weirdly, I’d have to say she looks good in it?

  • SistaT

I love it. I think she looks simple and attractive. No fussiness. I think this clean, pretty unembellished look is what she should go for more often. Personal best.

    • ktr33

Agree! I think it’s an ugly skirt — and for fall, anyway — but the look — including leotard neckline — is very well suited to her.

  • cocohall

My daughters wear this sort of top with high waisted skater skirts a lot, but the sleeves are shorter and it is a cute look. But they are also 16 and although not dancers, still have those long-limbed, lithe bodies that look good in dancer type clothing. But given what Ms. Paulson generally wears, this looks pretty good. Damning with faint praise, but sometimes we must applaud baby steps like new parent.

  • Fuchsiaforever

I think she looks like a gallerina- an art gallery employee

    • ktr33

      which isn’t terrible, imo

  • lilibetp

Yes, she looks like a deranged dance teacher. It’s still better than she usually looks, though. And the shoes don’t appear to be AA when she needs medium.

  • KateNJones

    I just got

  • demidaemon

I’m actually going to call this a personal best for her. I really like everything that’s going on here, and, for once, she doesn’t look like she escaped from the mental asylum. Good job, Sarah.

  • Jeremy Thomas Porta

Maybe she is a crazy dance teacher. That would be a good premise for AHS.

  • Man Dala

At least she ditched her usual ‘glamorous nun’ look for a change.

  • altermyego

I love the stockings the model is wearing! This outfit with those stockings would be a great look for the holidays but not August.

It’s been a very cool summer here in Milwaukee and I doubt it’s any cooler wherever all these long-sleeved celebrities are. So how can they stand it? I’d be miserably hot.

  • HeisenbergHattie

If, as I suspect, Sarah is about to head to the airport & board a plane, I applaud her common sense.

  • ktr33

Actually, I think the leotard is sort of flattering on her. The skirt us ugly and shouldn’t be worn in the summer anyway, but I think she looks decent from waist up. Better — and more well-suited to her — then anything we’ve seen her wear recently.

  • sunflower

I kind of love it? And I disagree that only dancers can wear that top… but I’m also a former dancer, so I’m partial to it. The skirt is ugly though

  • Clash D

I hope she finds her Maggie Gyllanhaal moment and starts wearing more stylist outfits.

  • I thought this was cute :/

  • JynxTheCat

ugh. That top is doing her no flattery and that skirt looks like a xmas tree skirt. And center part is giving her sad horse face. No to everything

  • amanda lynn

I love the crazy dance teacher look.
