Y’know, there’s something a little icky about a grown woman vamping it up like this for teenagers. Granted, every female star under thirty has to position herself as a viable product to sell to teenagers, but still. You wanna maybe tone down the obviousness of it all, Lea?

But fine; it’s a cute dress. It’s the stripper heels that really take it down. A fun pair of colorful pumps would’ve had this looking sexy and cute, rather than SEXTASTIC and LOOKATMERIGHTNOWANDNEVERSTOPLOOKING.

But that could just be our interpretation.

Weird. I actually love the heels (and makeup) and hate the dress. I also want to cut all her hair off. It is terrible. Kind of looks like a dirty mop. Glee’s ending soon, maybe it’s time for a cut and new colour?

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Yeah, the hair is pretty atrocious.

        • MartyBellerMask

Or, just not put the ratty extensions in.

      • 3boysful

A high pony would have been an improvement here.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

The hairstyling has that sex kitten feel to it, and it adds to the trying too hard feel of this look. I”m with TLo about the shoes; a cute pump that picked up one of the colors in the dress would have given this a bit more of a polished look.

        • sk8tfan

Only Bridget Bardot can pull off the Bardot look. I agree re the hair pulling the look into desperation territory. It’s a cute dress and better hair, shoes, makeup, everything else would have made it a good look.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

You correctly read my mind;I was definitely thinking of La Bardot, who was iconic. I know that Lea likes to show skin, but she really needs to rethink that as she moves forward. As another kitten noted, a polished pony tail, teemed with the right pump could have turned this into a much more attractive look.

            • sk8tfan

Great minds! A sleek ponytail would rock with this outfit. Her stylist needs to pour some cold water on her. She defaults to sexy, which does not suit her looks at all. She looks much better in slightly retro getups.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Lea and her stylist ought to be working on capitalizing on her assets-she’s got a cute figure, face and she could do youthful and a more polished, sophisticated look. The sexy thing is overdone.

            • sk8tfan

And she just ain’t sexy (at least in the sultry way she hopes). She has a killer smile, and beautiful eyes, and always seems lively and alert. There’s a lot for her stylist to work with. She should fire everyone in her current team or her current team should hold her hostage in the basement of Saks until she comes to her senses.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Agree, on all counts. Lea could present herself so much more effectively if she would stop trying to be something that doesn’t play to her strengths.

            • sk8tfan

WE should be her stylists, dang it! Yoo hoo, Lea, I’m over here, waiting for your call…

            • bitchybitchybitchy

The BK style mavens, ready to strut into action.

      • demidaemon

I don’t hate the shoes but I am totally not feeling the dress, either. The whole effect is lacking, for sure.

    • SewingSiren

Looks as if her run of one public appearances showing good taste in clothing is over.

      • Kathy

I think decormaven mentioned it before me, but she has definitely defaulted to her usual “style.”

    • Sarah

I think I have a bathing suit that is pretty much this dress. Of course, my suit has a little more coverage up top, but still…

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

It IS a cute dress. Your assessment gents is spot on. Needs a lot less deliberate sexiness deployed here. Unless she wants to get all the 13 year old boys hot, which is really,….I cant.

      • Sanglots longs

I have to poll my 14-year-old daughter when she returns from the sleepover where she and all her girlfriends watched this “awards” show. I am almost more worried about the girls watching, thinking they’re supposed to dress like this. It’s upsetting.

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Now that you mention it, that aspect is more disturbing. It patterns young women early that the only right way to dress is overtly sexual. There’s a time and a place for that sort of attire, just like anything else, but thinking that that’s how you dress, to just show up somewhere to sit in a theater seat is worrisome.

          • Sanglots longs

Exactly. That’s why I share TLo’s posts about Kiernan Shipka with my kid. Stylish, age-appropriate, and classy–and not that hard to emulate even on a Forever XXI budget.

          • Guest

she didn’t sit nor do the red carpet before the show. she went 5 mins before she had to present to get pics taken with her award at the press room, presented an award and then went home

          • AthenaJ

I feel so bad for a lot of teen girls these days, it seems like everything is SO body focused and looking sexy is now marketed to kids. I was pretty miserable in my teenage years and usually felt fat and ugly… But constantly being exposed to stuff like THIS and then comparing myself?? I wouldn’t have even wanted to live.

            • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

As a boy I felt the same way. short fat and ugly. (i’ve since learned to appreciate myself more clearly) And now that men are being subjected to similar inane standards, its getting just as bad for the boys as it is for the girls. You aren’t hot unless you have an 8 pack, good guns, and pecs. The part of me that is feminist, is happy that men have to face this same tyranny now. Perhaps they’ll learn a thing or two. But the utterly fair minded part of me says no one should be subjected to this.

            • jtabz

@kiltdntiltd:disqus, a good feminist wants parties of any gender/orientation to be comfortable in their own skin, expressing their own sexual preferences. The last thing we’d want is for young men to have to deal with these crazy body standards alongside women. So I’d say you’re being a very good feminist if you think neither boys nor girls should be subjected to it ;)

            • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

              Thanks for that!

            • jtabz

              Sure thing!

            • MissusBee

Up to the top of the internet.

            • Rhonda Shore

i have a teenage son entering his senior year in high school and it’s really not as hard for the boys…they all still wear jeans and t-shirts.

            • Dora Kishinevsky

I have some younger acquaintances who are ~20 and the girls take these sultry selfies every. single. moment. Whether you like your looks or don’t, it seems like there’s an incredible amount of social pressure on a girl to look like a porn star – and to keep it up 24/7. There isn’t a single moment where they allow themselves to go without makeup and a push-up bra. It just blows my mind.

      • StillGary

Are the boys even watching TCA? I pity the parents of girls, who are convinced they must emulate this kind of look for the 8th-grade mixer.

        • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

perhaps not. Any way you look at it this is seriously not cool.

    • Emily Giovanni

the dress is cute! she could also tone down the desperate by nixing the sex hair.

    • In_Stitches

With more boob coverage, this would be a great little dress. As is, it looks like what a stripper might wear at the start of a dance.

    • James

A long-haired tribble is eating her face.

    • MW

      This just makes me uncomfortable.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      I’m so uncomfortable. Ick.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

This is classic Of Course. With a side of If Only.. as in If Only some taste could be displayed.. :(

    • @Biting Panda

I know that Kaley Cuoco is working her ass off to be the next Jennifer Anniston, but I think Lea here may also be a contender. She has that bath towel, naked shoe, shit down cold.

    • Crystal

WHY IS SHE SO DAMN SHINY??????

      • Sobaika

I’m more concerned about the Cheeto-ness of her skin.

    • sutton

The dress looks cheap, the extensions look cheap and I assume the mugging is to get as much exposure as possible since her category was not televised. She is 27 years old and getting shown up by teenagers who are less try, when is someone going to tell her all she needs to do is walk out there and smile.

      • OffToSeeHim

Are you sure she’s 27? I thought she was more like 22.

      • formerlyAnon

I think the root of the problem is that when she’s told, (and I’m sure someone has tried to tone her down), she doesn’t believe them.

She’s internalized, somewhere along the way, that she’s not pretty enough without the sexualized overlay, or maybe that no young [female] performer, however beautiful, is enough without that overlay.

        • demidaemon

I think she feels she needs to combat her Barbara Streisand/Broadway chanteuse image to be marketable, rather than embracing it and being that star of her generation.

    • StillGary

Agree, agree – super cute dress and I wouldn’t have minded a fishtail braid over JBF hair.

    • OffToSeeHim

If I was in my early 20′s and had a slammin’ bod I’d wear stuff like this all the time, so I tend to give her a pass on this kind of thing.

      • Greeniano

Yes, but she will be 28 this month (OK, I know this because she is exactly my daughter’s age) and doesn’t that pass age out around 24?

        • OffToSeeHim

Someone else said she was 27, and I couldn’t believe it. Yes, that does pass around the 24/25 time frame for me at least. I mean, at some point you’ve gone from being “in your 20′s” to being “almost 30.” Having said that, that’s a TOUGH transition – it was for me and I wasn’t even known internationally as a sex symbol. It seems like she would have to redefine her whole view of herself to stop dressing this way.

    • Kent Roby

The heels, the tan, and the surfboard carry this cute dress firmly into the Miss Hawaiian Tropics contest.

    • carnush

I really hope, for her sake, that she’s not going to these awards 20 years from now.

      • alyce1213

Oh great, now I can’t get that picture out of my mind.

        • carnush

So I just saw the post of JLo at these awards and there’s your answer.

    • MilaXX

Her head is spray tanned a completely different color than her body. In fact looking at the color of her legs I’d say Lea got herself an ombre spray tan.

    • cmb123

Funny…I like all the dress and shoes individually – but together they are so trashy. I wish the skirt was a bit longer so the shoes didn’t look so cheap and that her hair stylist would talk her into something that doesn’t make her look like a wet dog. She’s so cute, it’s a shame she always goes this route.

    • Anna

      Aaaannnnnd she’s back.

I know this is the Teen Choice Awards, but this has a Girls Gone Wild/Spring Break edition vibe. Thanks for making me think that and creeping me out on a Monday morning, Lea.

      • Kitten Mittons

I seriously love the idea of that dress. Then she went and Lea’d it up. Sonofabitch.

And it’s the “Look at my ass” posing pic that did me in. Snakeskin. Really and truly? How does a brain, any brain, think that colorblocking adorableness should go with snakesin?

And then the problematic message this all send to the young ones, is a whole ‘nother issue. So much rage on a Monday.

        Serenity Now.

        • Anna

The ratty hair isn’t helping either. It’s like she looked at photos of herself on her recent good streak and went, “I looked really polished and pretty. I want THE OPPOSITE of that for my next appearance, please.”

          • Kitten Mittons

That, or she actually thinks this looks better. Which is much, much scarier.

            • Anna

I think she probably does, she seems very comfortable looking like this.

            • Kitten Mittons

              RAGERAGERAGE

          • marlie

You mean “JBF hair” wasn’t the right choice for the Teen Choice Award?

            • Anna

Lea Michele getting ready for an event must be a scary thing to witness: “I want the really rumpled, JBF-looking extensions. More. More. MORE.”

            • Sarah

And please do not COMB them, for chrissake. They need to look JBF, dammit!

            • Anna

DON’T question me. Yes, this is what I want! And MORE bronzer with extra body oil, make it quick.

            • Sarah

EXTRA MASCARA!! I want RACCOON, dammit! I’m the new SJP!!!

            • Glam Dixie

Why don’t the ends look fried? Make them really fuzzy and damaged looking to match my real ends!

        • kimmeister

The posing is what amps up the trashy factor for me for sure, not the shoes.

          • Kitten Mittons

Sadly, it’s the whole package for me. Her vamping does not help in any way. It never does.
I like the shoes, and I like the idea of the dress. I do not like them together at all. And I pretty much loathe how she is wearing that dress. If it were just slightly less form fitting, a bit longer, and less boobular, I’d love the dress.

And I love a good snakeskin. But as with most animal prints, it has to be deployed thoughtfully to avoid the train to Tacky Town. Pairing it with a body conscious, plunging, too-short dress, and all the other styling choices she made, was a bad choice. Not only did she not avoid the train, she is now driving the train on her way to her mayoral inauguration of Tacky Town.

But I still think that snakeskin with a pastel colorblocked dress is a huge WTF. It makes not a bit of sense to me.

          • conniemd

Yeah, the dress might have been tolerable but the posing goes right to “look how sexy I am.” I really dislike this girl and it’s not irrational.

    • Hoffa_w_HerHead

The hair doesn’t help. A fresh ponytail might have made this look more youthful and flirty.

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

it definitely feels like a “tell me I’m pretty….Tell Me I’m Pretty…..TELL ME I’M SO PRETTY” ick. just wanna vom

    • Jaeda Laurez

The dress fits oddly through her bust and midsection. I don’t think it’s flattering for her shape at all, and seems a bit short for an awards ceremony focused on Teens. She’s gotta figure out a plan for her hair too; it looks wiggy, and I think that’s her real hair :-/

    • SistaT

Girl, no. That is a bathing suit cover-up. At best, it’s what you wear to dinner on the cruise ship when it isn’t “Captain’s Ball” night.

    • MarissaLG

This would be a great outfit for like, the Spike/Maxim/Men’s whatever awards. Or maybe a post-divorce night out with the girls?

      • kimmeister

Or her 10-year high school reunion, where she’s got something to prove!

        • MarissaLG

Yes! Funnily enough, my mom actually works at Lea’s HS alma mater. And, I think we’re the same age so her 10 year should be coming up soon. My guess is that she will not be attending lol.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

      CLOSE YOUR DAMN MOUTH, LEA!

    • RussellH88

It’s sad, because I think the dress is kind of fun.

But leave it to Lea Michelle to take it into gross territory.

    • decormaven

She had a nice little string of acceptable looks going, but I see she’s defaulted to her ol’ standby here. Disappointing.

    • Wink

I want to believe that she knows it’s a cheesy look (and show), so she’s vamping it up
with the leg kick. On the other hand, she just may be totally
      clueless.

      • Guest

Well, her reaction to someone calling her out on her red carpet vamping was to preach about how women should be supportive of each other and not be ~petty, so I am going with clueless

    • marlie

The dress AND the heels (which aren’t actually that bad) AND the big hair AND the posing are Too. Much. FFS, Lea, tone it down a bit for a kid-related event.

    • elemspbee

      that hair. so gross.

    • FibonacciSequins

      Standard.

    • MartyBellerMask

Well, she’s doing her thing, I guess. The last pic is PURE CANDIE’S ad. I assume that’s what she’s going for and nailed it.

    • SugarSnap108

      A little icky?

    • MM4321

T&Lo, pretty sure your interpretation is correct!

    • R.A.

A LITTLE icky?!?! This is so beyond inappropriate for an Awards Show that’s aimed at KIDS. It’s not even the TEEN Choice Awards, it’s the KIDS Choice Awards, which I take to mean ages 0-12. I am all for female sexual agency and very much against slut-shaming, but I do not think that this was the time or the place for this little number.

I also found it disturbing that Bella Thorne and Lea Michele appeared to be the same age. (Bella Thorne is 16.) I don’t know, I don’t want to sound stuffy or shame-y, but something about the general aesthetic on the red carpet last night left a bad taste in my mouth.

      • Sarah

I see your point, of course, but the surfboard and backdrop seem to be asserting that it is indeed “TEEN” choice.

        • R.A.

Hmmm right you are… I don’t know why I was so convinced that it was the Kids Choice Awards. (No excuse for missing the backdrop other than – it’s Monday!) I’ll amend my original reaction to one that is SLIGHTLY less icked-out.

    • yayito83

Hate the hair and make up, tha dress is not bad but overall i dont like the look

    • Mothra

No. That is not her dress. She’s looking a lot like a Sarasota Cougar.

      • Constant Reader

My thoughts exactly. The dress is cute, but the hair, makeup, shoes, orange spray tan, and vamping all age her 20 years.

    • tallgirl1204

I just do. not. like. the trend of the fancy-fied front with the plain black back. I love the front of the dress, and I don’t even mind it being tight and short– however, the plain back takes it to cheap-christmas-sweater for me.

    • http://msavonelljrose.blogspot.com Avonell

I love the dress. It’s really fun for the TCAs. I agree about the heels, a good pump would have been nice. And her poses annoy me. They’re so forced.

    • Denise Rambo

What’s with no polish on the ring finger nail? And … she really needs to have that amateur moon tattoo on her foot either removed or enhanced. It looks like one of her friends in middle school did it.

      • marlie

It seems like it’s actually a light pink color. It’s been a “thing” to paint the ring ringer a different color or pattern for a while now, but here it’s such a pale color that it looks like there’s nothing there.

    • AnnaleighBelle

Is there a reason that the pattern or color of a dress doesn’t go all the way around the back? It always irritates me, but if there’s a logical reason…

      • SewingSiren

        $.

        • AnnaleighBelle

Nope, didn’t help. Still irritates me.

          • SewingSiren

The fact that they skimp on production costs to make more money on a garment in this price range should make it even more irritating ;).

    • Jacob Bowen

Lea, only Billy from School of Rock can sum this up correctly, “You’re tacky and I hate you!”

    • Janet B

      Totally inappropriate.
I hate that she looked like that at this event.

    • LibKat

Just so much wrong. She needs to step away from the fake bake. And to match her under eye concealer to which ever shade of orange she is using on the rest of her face. She looks like a negative print of a raccoon.

    • boweryboy

I was thinking it and you guys said it. So tone deaf and inappropriate. And she was doing so well on the sartorial front for a while there.

    • Kerry McCombs

At least her fake tan is even?

    • altermyego

I love how there’s a thought bubble coming out of her head in the second to last photo and then the last photo has one coming out of her vagina.

    • papillon

I so wish vamp-y wasn’t her default. And that hair is horrendous.

    • Edie Rose

      Triangle boobs :(

    • cocohall

I think this look perfectly illustrates the conundrum that faces our young (but not actually in their teens) stars. You have a fan base, one that you hope to bring with you as you transition to more adult roles, so yes, dressing youthfully is essential. HOWEVER, you also don’t want people in the industry who might have the power to cast you in more adult roles to think that you are going to play a high school student forever. So you wear this. Youthful, but styled to appeal to the “suits.” At least that is idea. To somehow straddle( in the case, an actual surfboard) two worlds. Of course, the general trend towards sexualizing children and teens doesn’t help. I work in an elementary school and each year there are always a couple of 11 year old girls that attend “graduation” wearing hooker heels and minis in order to appear “grown up.” With their mothers’ blessings. It goes without saying that the same mothers are often wearing their own version of this look themselves, to a 10:00 am event. Sadly, Lea Michele, would fit right in. I wish I were kidding.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Perhaps she reads Tom and Lorenzo often and take the phrase “poledance” literally.

    • http://instagram.com/nevareese International Model

      …Barker Beauty…

    • evave2

So this is the one time you LIKE the yellow stripper heels on the model and DISLIKE the silver stripper heels on Lea?

OK. I wonder about people who wear silver stripper heels.

Does anyone think the dress makes her look a little thick in the middle (as a person who is thick in the middle I take upon myself the right to judge)?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I love the colors on the dress but I just CAN’T with her incessant narcissistic presentation of herself. And she needs a serious haircut.

    • Betsy

Looking at the backdrop, a pair of FOX blue or Candie’s pink sandals would be cute.

      • Janet B

I think she did Candie’s print ads a while back; probably early Glee days.

    • ktr33

and the porno face in 2nd to last look. Ugh, ugh, she needs a good scrubbing. The dress is so much cuter on the model, wearing it as a body-skimming shift, not a curve-hugging whatever. And I hate BOTH pairs of shoes intensely. I feel sad now.

    • HobbitGirl

      It’s a cute little nightgown.

    • ktr33

When she wore that Barbra-bob-wig for her role in FG on Glee, it worked rather well, I thought. If you can believe this, I once read that her STYLE ICON IS ALI MCGRAW. ALI. MCGRAW. Surely, she is confusing ALI. MCGRAW with a similarly named stripper?

    • Tracie Rivera

That is a new hair color. ……

    • frannyprof

She rarely seems to know her audience/venue. She has one setting: SEXYSEXYSEXYALLTHETIME.

    • alyce1213

Her brief foray into better taste lasted only until the next awards show.
Why is the nail on her left ring finger unpolished? Is that a thing — a statement?

      • snarkykitten

Maybe it was supposed to be a “nude” tone accent nail, but the color was too close to her skin tone?

        • alyce1213

So an accent nail is a thing? I had no idea.

          • snarkykitten

            yes…? It’s been around for a while.

              Why?

            • snarkykitten

I can’t really articulate why it’s a thing (why were 80s perms a thing?), but personally I think when it’s done well, it looks nice. You can see examples on pinterest.

ack, guess my link was screened. I don’t know why it’s a thing (why was big hair a thing in the 80s?) but when deployed right, it can look good. If you google nude/black manicures, you can see some good examples. YMMV though.

It has pink polish but it’s very close to her skin tone.

    • Courtney

Hair looks kind of wiggy, and not in a good way, no?

    • HeisenbergHattie

I agree with T-Lo. The shoes gotta go. And for the love of adolescent girls everywhere, PLEASE stop posing with an arched back while raising one leg. That makes you look like a stripper looking for her pole.

Hookah at a country club realness. I really cannot wait for GLEE to conclude its existence. I am so sick of this try-hard chick. She does too much. I just cannot with her. Bye girl.

It’s the combination of the shoes and the bikini top-esque bodice. They only belong together in a stereotypical shorthand for an exchange of [the promise of] sex for financial reward and/or access to power.

Harsh, I know, since she’s in an industry where that look does buy a woman performer attention & opportunities, but I’m tired of this with her. She has the youth, the success and has enough ability to be more subtle about it. What the hell will she have left to go to when she’s 40?

    • SophieCollier

I hate it when the pattern is only on the front. That’s so cheap looking.

    • MissusBee

I see these pictures and think ‘Fausto Puglisi’ is Italian for ‘Of Course’ but clearly it can’t be.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Too tan, too streaked, too bare, too trashy… She’s going for Ann-Margret when she should try for something classier and less SEXTASTIC.

    • Kimberlini

Good lord….girl now looks like a MILF wanna be.

    • Jecca2244

I felt like Ian (in your rundown) was the night’s male version of this.

    • snarkykitten

Wow, she looks good for 45!

    • Richard

Am I the only one that thinks that the make up ages her a whole lot? Like you know when celebrity women reach their 40′s-50′s, and they start hitting the red carpet with super revealing outfits that tell everyone “age is nothing but a number! I’ve still got it!”? That what she looks like with that make up along with that outfit.

Aw. She’s been doing so well lately.

The too-much tan and stripper pumps take this slightly retro Mod dress into Shindig! meets Bond Girl campy.

Pet peeve: garments that are embellished or printed on the front and solid on the back.

    • Susan Velazquez

I think it’s her vamping and posing that makes this an “Of course”. I like the metallic shoe although I would have preferred a silver pump or a different sandal. I do like the yellow pump on the model though too. If she would just stand still, do that 3/4 pose that all celebs do (hell, I’d even accept the have to pee leg cross) and smile then I would give her a pass.

The turkcton of tanner, hooker heels and JBF hair does too.

    • LadyLuck777

It’s like she is constantly trying to prove she is the anti-Agron.

I know, I know, but I really love the dress…

I’ll take the hair and raise you a Too. Much. Chest.
