Katie Holmes in Zac Posen at “The Giver” New York Premiere

Posted on August 12, 2014

We don’t generally like overworked dresses, but this one manages to keep its own excesses subtle.

It helps that the harsh lighting washes out all that ruching and shirring. The pale pink looks great on her and the silhouette is perfect for her. Hate the scarf-thingies hanging off the back. Never did like that sort of detail. Always looked a little too “drag” to us.

Are we sounding like a broken record when we say the shoes seem off? Are we wrong there? They look heavy and the color isn’t really working.

We said this about Amy Adams’ outfit yesterday, but it’s even more true of this one: she looks like a fabulous dancer or dance teacher. Are dancers having a fashion moment? Are dancers the new style icon?

  • antheapena

Agree with the show verdict but this is the best she’s looked in ages!

  • Capt. Renault

The Liz Hurley look works well for her.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

  • SistaT

Definitely wrong shoes but otherwise I think she looks gorgeous.

  • Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

    • Karen Belgrad

I was wondering why I had such a strong draw to this dress… and YES!

    • PinkyK

      You’re right!

    • Kitten Mittons

    • Nancer

      I love that movie…

    • Anna

      She’s like the wind!

    • Kent Roby

I hope that Katie had the time of her life at the after-party.

    • OffToSeeHim

      OMG! Nailed it!

    • crystal76

That’s what I was going to say!

  • PinkyK

I like it; it suits her. However, it is a bit ball room dance star…

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

thankfully her jewels help bring some pops of color to her outfit. the earrings are to die for.

  • Firecat

Thumbnail: great makeup! Look at photo: great top! Scroll down: Aaaaaargh.

  • sienna elm

    I love the bodice.

  • teensmom99

Yeah, those are the wrong shoes.

  • CaseyinNY

The dress is really cute, and I bet it’s extra gorgeous when it moves.

  • sherrietee

I wonder if the shoes looked better in person with the dress; I’ve often worn a pink/gray combo and they generally go well together. But the dress is awfully washed out, like you said, so that’s why the shoes look off. But yes, they look off.

    • teensmom99

The shoes have a business look that doesn’t go with the fancy dress.

      • MilaXX

Agreed. It’s not the pink/gray color combo that’s the problem. It’s the style of shoe. Those look like they are better suited for a skirt and jacket.

        • Kent Roby

It seems to be a tonal issue as well; i think that a lighter gray might work better, since it would have less visual weight.

      • evave2

Thank you, I could not pinpoint what it was that clashed about the shoes/dress. But I think it is also that everything distinctive about the dress is washed out in the lighting here.

      • sherrietee

Really? Glittery gray shoes are business wear? In what alternate reality?

        • teensmom99

The shape is a business shape-they look heavy not ethereal.

  • Nancer

The shoes look like she forgot to pack a matching pair, but everything else is lovely! And I like the floating scarfs – it looks very Greek goddess to me. Love this.

  • sutton

The dress is very pretty, but the look would be better with different shoes. Overall this is the best she has looked in a while.

  • Imma Mäder

great makeup, heavy shoes, yoga hair, don’t really care for the dress

  • RussellH88

Now she just needs a cane to stamp on the floor.

    • Constant Reader

And a cigarette burning in the other hand.

  • Wink

The structured bodice and flowy skirt look great on her. Although the scarf-thingies aren’t really needed, they add a touch of Old Hollywood style.

  • KirFla

I’ve had it OFFICIALLY with that smirk.

    • Thomas

I used to hate it as well, but then somebody here said that she has cerebral paulsy, so now I feel bad about it.

      • Kathy

Oh wow, I did not know that.

      • Bell’s palsy, not cerebral, surely?

        • Thomas

Yes, that’s what I mean. Thank you!

          • KirFla

I didn’t either, oh great. Well, thanks for telling me.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

Bells palsey or not (my mother had it but it wasn’t permanent), the girl has never been a great poser. Although I kind of like her awkwardness.

  • Kitten Mittons

I don’t care for the shoes, either. Something a little more delicate was called for. I like the sparkle, though.

I’m really liking all the rest of this, but the hair…I dunno. Side view is gorgeous, best she’s looked in ages. Front view, everything’s a little too tight and pointy. She needs to loosen that ‘do just a bit, with a little more volume in the Northwest and Northeast regions of her head (if the top of the bun is due North).

I think Baby Coneheads are adorable, too, but they are not a hairstyle inspiration.

  • Anna

She kept the hair from the last appearance, but the outfit is better in this one. Not crazy about that lip colour though and agree that a less-heavy shoe was called for.

  • Anna Vasquez

Eh. Back when I was her age, I had 43 movies under my belt, and I had to do it without tappa-tappa-tappa. I would’ve *killed* for tappa-tappa-tappa.

  • majorbedhead

Why does Zac Posen always insist on so much busy-ness in the torso area of his dresses?

I’m not in love with this look. It’s just sort of ok.

    • demidaemon

It’s probably the fear of boobies. He’s hoping to squish them into nonexistence.

  • RescueMe23

    I think she looks fabulous.

  • fromanotherplanet

I don’t like the bottom but Katie is serving Victoria Beckham realness here and I’m living for it. Get it girl.

  • MarissaLG

She looks great (and very pleased with herself) I wouldn’t mind at all if dancers were having a Fashion Moment.

  • MilaXX

Nope, those shoes totally do not go with that dress. It’s almost a scroll down fug for me.

  • The dark heels definitely does not go with the delicate dress.

Anywho, great makeup. Not feeling the hair. It sent this look to ‘dance teacher’ territory.

  • Loren S

I think it’s the scarf detail that makes it look so dancery. Very Isadora Duncan.

  • I like it! She looks gorgeous

  • Sarah

I’m okay with the dress, not with the shoes, but I also actually don’t like her makeup. The lippy is not a good color for her, and I feel like she defaults to the Smoky Eye every single time, and especially with a look like this, she could have tried for something lighter. Unless she’s trying to make her eye sockets match her shoes, in which case; well done.

    • marlie

I sort of like her makeup, and this time the pale lip doesn’t make me angry because it doesn’t look like they were attempting to match her face exactly. And the smoky eye was done well; sometimes it’s too heavy on her. But it would be interesting to see her in a rd lip or something. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wear a bold color on her lips.

  • pizzaqueen

i think she looks great, but that closed mouth smile/smirk she does always makes her look SO smug. though, it kind of works with this look, like one of the bitchy instructors at the ABC Academy in Center Stage.

  • RoseJB

I love all of it! the hair and makeup, the drag scarf thingy – even the shoes. I need an event in my life where I can rock this exact same look.

  • Mrs. Julien

Is anyone else getting To Catch a Thief?

    • tallgirl1204

yes- yes– I think that’s why I thought “Princess Grace”! Of course– Grace Kelly, as beautiful an ice queen as ever was.

  • marlie

I really like this on her! Katie looks pretty and elegant and classy. I don’t even mind the shoes; they give the look a tad bit of edge.

  • tallgirl1204

This is the perfect dress for Katie– somehow both form-fitting and demure. Even the color works– on another woman of her age it might read as twee, but on her it is doing a nice Princess Grace thing. I don’t even mind the shoes. Well-played.

  • MissusBee

Dress needs a dainty shoe. Slingbacks or peep toe in a metallic would have been okay, maybe sandals although that might have taken it full-ballroom. Do not like the hair (okay from the side but gives her pointy-head from the front). Scarfy things belong to a drag queen or Betty Draper. Basically massive beehive and falsies are needed to pull that off, possibly gloves and a cigarette holder. Okay now I love and want them, for the sole purpose of sashaying dramatically away, after blowing smoke in people’s faces. In 1967.

  • Myra Amler

You are not wrong about the shoes, they are the wrong color and seem to clunky for this dress.
I would have cut off the scarf thingies.
Interesting that Posen criticizes designers for being unoriginal and then sends this out on a red carpet. Pretty dress, but seen it before.

    • marlie

And every time he criticizes someone for not editing, my eyes roll all the way back into my head.

      • Myra Amler

        No kidding!

        • PinkyK

I was thinking the same thing!

      • demidaemon

I will say, in a minor defense, that it is easy to see the problem that you have in someone else before realizing it in yourself. maybe he just needs another couple seasons on PR to start self-editing.

        • PR Christmas Special – the judges become the judged. Let the final 4 contestants have their say on something Posen had 24 hours to come up with.

          • demidaemon

            Heee. I like it.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

She does have some kind of dance connection–she’s part of the Dizzy Feet Foundation and has guest-judged a few times on So You Think You Can Dance, where she seemed to kind of know what she was talking about.

Agree about the shoes, they are off.

  • The first thought I had was, hallelujah, she has successfully passed the “Suppress the Smirk when you Smile” course!
The shoes don’t bug me so much but the little shoulder scarves are just plain dumb. Nice earrings!

  • FibonacciSequins

Love the shape of that dress on her, love the styling (including the shoes). I would have snipped off the drapes.

  • crash1212

I like the shoes. I like the shoes with the dress – they ground the floatiness. She looks fabulous here.

  • frannyprof

Don’t love it, but this is the most pulled together RC look of hers we’ve seen in a while, so I’ll take it.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The lizard/reptile shoes are off. Her makeup is lovely, and the shell pink is so delicate. Lose the scarf-y things on the back, and this is a full win for me.

    • kimmeister

I’ve been trying to figure out what the print on the shoes is, exactly, in the absence of a closeup. I think you’re right about them being reptile, although it also looks like she dipped her toes in something.

  • DeniseSchipani

Ballet teacher goes out for the evening. Definitely a dance-teacher vibe here. Shoes way off — too heavy.

  • lalahartma

Thee prettiest I’ve seen her in a while!

  • decormaven

Great look, sans the shoes. She needs to wear something in the color family of those earrings- it would be stunning.

  • Gatto Nero

She looks beautiful here. I love the dress on her and don’t even mind the scarf detail, which adds a little fantasy and balances the fullness of the skirt.
I like the shoes, too, but would have gone with platinum or white gold bracelets instead of yellow gold.

  • Lee

Her arms on her hips in the first picture makes her look like a dancer superhero of some sort. I also the earrings

    • Constant Reader

You beat me to it! I was going to say it looks like something Wonder Woman would get married in. That in no way makes me like it less.

  • Latin Buddy

Nobody puts Katie in the corner…

  • yllas

    1) I don’t like her. At all. Not ‘hate’, just a simmering dislike. 2) That pale pale pink? That’s a color I DO hate, it’s a no color, neither here nor there. 3) Can’t make out what the shoes are – lizard? Sparkles?……….saying all that, I regret to say I think she looks (to use her favorite word) just AMAZING, and I would kill for the dress if it came to hand-to-hand combat. I love the ruching, the floatiness, it’s just lovely, and so nice to see something light and pretty in the summer.

  • Shawn EH

Not only is she beating the model, she’s beating Cocoa Rocha!? This dress is much too soft for Cocoa, but Katie looks amazing, especially her legs!

    • demidaemon

It doesn’t help Coco that you can see every damned ruffle in HD whereas Katie has somehow had them blasted and filtered out.

      • Shawn EH

Tom probably taught her how to do that!

        • demidaemon

          You are probably right!

  • Kerry McCombs

She certainly looks pleased with herself.

  • msdamselfly

Looks good. Like the shoes with the dress. They reference her eyes.

  • She looks great…most together look for her in a long time! Agree…all that “Madame Grey” wanna-be draping takes this to a second hand vintage store look w/o the finnese of a real MG! Maybe this will be the next “HOUSE” snapped up once the “Charles James’s” legacy has been demolished by RTW!

  • LibKat

Everything looks great until the shoes. They should be worn with a ball-busting Barbara Stanwyck suit, not a floaty-girly party dress.

  • moxx

Don’t like the earrings. They look too clunky. A simple pair of gold or diamond ones would look much better. And then she could liven it up with different shoes.

    • Dagney

yes, agree on the earrings. that’s straight up prom circa 1986.

  • conniemd

Isn’t that the definition of Zac Posen – overworked? When his overworking is subtle he can make some very pretty dresses. But then there are the WTF ones as well.

    • Chartreusite

WAY too overworked and generally it’s very unimaginative overworked (unlike say Pilotto or McCartney who at least put out something that makes you REALLY wonder who was smoking crack) based around beating one sort of fabrication technique to death. He’s got the skills but he definitely could use some editing on the whole.

      • demidaemon

I kind of prefer his overworking to theirs, though, You can kind of squint at his and say, “Oh, if he only took about 800 of those ruches off, it would look just fine.” With the other two, I just don’t know where to even start.

  • kmk05

Until you reach the ankles, everything is perfect. Her makeup is great and the ruching is almost invisible, and the bun comes off artfully messy and not like yoga hair.

  • mickiemonkey

She looks FANTASTIC except for the Christmas shoes. Love her wiggy post-Bell’s Palsy smile.

  • susan6

Definitely gives a “ballet teacher” vibe, especially with the topknot. The shoes need to be tossed in a fire.

  • Yoshio

I wear those shoes with jeans so she absolutely should not be wearing them here…otherwise not a bad look at all.

  • Joanna

Her makeup is outstanding – she looks gorgeous.

  • Solokitty

    Vapid. Just like her.

  • EEKstl

She’s having a 2005 Moment in the wrong shoes.

  • KinoEye

My first thought was on how wrong the shoes were for this floaty, pale gown. Apart from that, this is the best she’s looked in ages to my eyes.

  • Call the detectives at L&O: Fashion Victims Unit. ‘Cause those shoes are a crime.

  • fursa_saida

I’m distracted by how much she bores me. Meanwhile, is that Coco Rocha in the runway photo? What is she doing with her face? What horrible smell could she have been trying to ignore? Or is she trying not to sneeze?

  • ojosazules

This is vey pretty, for Kate. The shoes look moldy. I want the earrings.

  • Swan Queen.

  • prisma

This is like the Amish version of an ice skater’s outfit.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She does look very Cyd Charisse in this. I like it though. The shoes are not the best choice though- they’re a bit too sensible for a dress like this, which deserves sandals.

  • Beto

Looks beautiful, that’s it until I saw those shoes.

  • lilibetp

Gorgeous until you get to the feet.

  • Ashley

The dress is pretty and the earrings are interesting, but everything else is off. The shoes are office-appropriate; the messy high bun is yoga-appropriate (and doesn’t flatter her face shape); and the Cartier gold bangle is a very odd and unnecessary add-on.

  • dash1211

Posen’s stuff bores the hell out of me.

  • Trickytrisha

The shoes look like something unpleasant is growing on them, but she’s looking better than usual. Those earring though… I’d swear Macy’s had them on sale recently. Not feeling the hair.

  • unbornfawn

Those shoes look drab in the photos. The dress looks great. Not fond of the pinhead hair.

  • GemFemme

Usually I find her dull as dishwater, but she looks quite lovely here. The shoes are hiddy.

  • Columbinia

Yes, the shoes are wrong, so very, very wrong.

  • Emily S

the color works so nicely against her olive skin. She and Jessica Alba can pull that color off. But not you, Kristin Wiig.

  • quiltrx

    It’s very 40s-movie-ish, I like it a lot!
(and yes, those shoes are whack.)

  • jahphotogal

    She is so pretty.

  • Ali2044

This is the best she’s looked in forever. I think she’s growing more lovely with age, her face is thinning out and she’s got that look in her eyes like “I’ve some shit, man”. Which, of course the former Mrs. Cruise has…

  • demidaemon

It does look about 50 times better on her than the model. she should thank her lucky stars that they decided to blast the RC with lighting.

  • Man Dala

    She looks fantastic, me thinks.

  • E. D.

I like it, but the shoes are too much.

  • Shalhevet

WOW. She just looks so ALIVE and radiant. And glamorous to boot.

  • Laura Livingston

The dress is beautiful, her face is gorgeous. A woman with those ears should not wear her hair like that.

  • Gorgeous look. It so nice to have Kate back now that Xenu has left her building. But I agree…something about the shoes don’t work. I love how the model is coordinated. The metallic pink shoes work wonders. The shoes Kate is wearing look heavy for that ethereal, light dress. Also – is it me, or would that dress make a lovely short casual wedding dress if it were in white?

    • Kikishua

Even in the pink, it would be a lovely wedding dress, since it’s so pale. And unusual too!

  • Clash D

My heart sank a little bit when i scrolled down as I was hoping for a longer dress. But it’s not awful so, okay.
    I don’t love the hair.

    • Clash D

Oh, I just realized it was Coco Rocha modelling that dress (on the runway).

  • ktr33

I think she looks pretty great, but the earrings are slightly off. But I’d call this an AttaKatie.

  • Melanie

um what is she doing with her face? and her neck??

  • imustacheyouaquestion

I hope dancers are having a fashion moment!! ballet FTW 🙂

  • Jenna621

If this dress was in navy blue, I think it would help immensely.

  • DeTrop

This is a pretty dress in a sort of quickie-wedding way. You nailed the shoes. Too heavy for such an ethereal dress.

  • Don Hackett

those shoes look like she stepped in mud.
    …..sleah in norcal
