Posted on August 26, 2014

We gasped when we saw this.

Sheer perfection. It’s elegant, sexy and quietly confident at the same time. There’s a lot of pressure for women stars to go as girly as possible in their styling (see the previous post), but we think what we love most about this look is that it’s womanly, if that makes any sense. It’s knowing and confident; sleek and dramatic. It speaks of taste and experience. One of the very best looks of the night.

BRAVA, Lizzy darling. Everyone wants to be you or do you. You win the night.

    WERQ! Seriously, this is flawless.

    • Dany

She has been SO impressive with her red carpet for her show that I expect amazeballs every time I see her. She also has a very uniquely lean body type that can pull off a lot of different looks.

      • Man Dala

She has this tiny waist and rock-hard abs (see her in the crop top in yesterday’s post). I thought that in her recent editorial her waist had been photoshopped but no, it’s all hers.

    • Pablo Ulloa

      *slow stand up applause*

    • The dress did not fit her obviously!

  • Coleen

My personal top 3 best dressed for the evening.

AND I just read that she is *allegedly* dating James Marsden, which, you know, double snaps there.

    • mlurve

They would make THE MOST BEAUTIFUL babies

      • Kent Roby

Now I simply MUST have a Marsden-Caplan baby; the neighbors will be SO jeolous!

      • Leah Elzinga

imagine the cheekbones and eyes! (that sounded creepier once I typed it out)

    • Leah Elzinga

arguably the only good thing to come out of that HORRIBLE movie they did together.

      • Kent Roby

Ooo, “Bachelorette”; that was quite terrible; watching it for “free” on Netflix was too expensive!

      • Dany

OH MY GOD THAT AWFUL MOVIE. Dude, literally it was a bunch of incredibly UNLIKEABLE PEOPLE doing a shit load of cocaine. It was AWFUL. Really one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

  • NMMagpie

  • imspinningaround

    You made it, Casey Klein!

    • MarieLD

I re-watched Mean Girls this summer and was all “wait, that’s the same Lizzy Caplan?!” Brava.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

My thoughts exactly! I rarely have any semblance of an emotional connection with television characters, but I adored everyone on Party Down so much that I have the same fondness for the actors that I had for their characters. Whenever I see Lizzy Caplan on the red carpet, I think of the episode where Casey is going to take her mom to her big movie premiere to finally show her that she “made it,” only to learn that her scene got cut. Daggers to the heart, still. So this WERQ is making me wayyyy too happy, haha.

  • Dorothy & Michael n/a

    Grace Kelly-like magnificence.

    • Trent

SO agree. Flawless and timeless. My favorite of the night. I do have *some* quibbles with the amount of eye makeup but the overall effect is just stellar.

  • smh4748

Overall effect is great–dramatic, beautiful, sophisticated.

However, I could definitely live without the cutouts showing on the midriff. Yes, Lizzy, you have fabulous abs, we know it. And I can’t really blame you for wanting to flaunt them. But it makes a few of those shots from the front look a little bit like she’s the girl at prom with permissive parents who bought her the slightly slutty dress. Luckily, the styling and her poise keep that from being the main effect of the look.

    • In_Stitches

Yeah, the hair, earrings, that face and her general sense of poise and bad-assery are doing a lot of work here. Not sure about the dress, but she does look stunning.

    • Raspberry2012

I don’t mind the cut outs. They’re not too over the top – they’re just a couple of very simple accents. To me, they don’t distract from the over all sophistication and glamour of this look. They enhance it – they’re not too much.

  • katetastrophe

I think she looks stunning. However, there’s something about the black/white combo that makes me think she’s on the hunt for Dalmatian puppies.

  • Emily Giovanni

It takes a specially-shaped lady to be able to do love handle cutouts.

    • Minority opinion: I don’t like love handle cutouts on anyone.

      • In_Stitches

I’m with you. Were they a little higher, they’d be fantastic. As is, well, they aren’t bad which is a testament to her pilates instructor, but they could be so much better.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

Do you remember her stint on True Blood? She is BLESSED genetically.

  • Jackie4g

Very much like the front. Am mystified by the white drapery in back. It’s just distracting.

    • ballerinawithagun

Despise the white sheet, I mean drapery!

  • jilly_d

  • decormaven

She is on top of her game! You work it, Miss Lady.

    • jen_vasm

When I saw this I immediately thought, “Girlfriend is not messing around tonight. At. All.”

  • Introspective

I love the point about it being “womanly”–which in fact is evocative of her character on the show. an intelligent and independent woman, twice divorced, with 2 kids and much sexual experience. she looked the part.

    amazing. flawless. werq it out!!

    • Rhonda Shore

That’s what i thought too…that what she projects through her flawless execution of this look is very much like the character she plays on the show. (And I loved her in “Mean Girls” too…i can’t help but think of that “it’s made of your mother’s chest hair” line EVERY SINGLE TIME I see her.)

  • WERQ!

  • Anna

Also: I’m imagining this as an “homage” to Julia Roberts’s Oscars Valentino.

    • Fitzperry

Reminded me of Julia’s Valentino as well.

    • Me too – but I prefer this! Would prefer it even more with a bit of colour on her lips.

      • Anna

I prefer it too, I like to imagine her thinking, “Suck it, Julia. Mine looks better.” Agree about the lip colour.

  • TheGrandSophy

    Stunning. Regal, in fact.

    • J.W.

“Regal” came to mind with me as well.

  • SophieCollier

That is a gorgeous gown! She definitely is gasp-worthy.

  • KateMaryC

It obviously calls back to the famous Julia Roberts Oscar dress, but more up-to-date. Never have I so enjoyed cut-outs. In a gown. Or in anything.

  • H2

Gorgeous. I hope Julia Roberts took notes.

    • Fitzperry

Can absolutely see this on her too. Gorgeous dress.

      • gloriana232

Weirdly, this reminded me of Roberts’ 2001 Oscars dress, although now Googling it, I see there’s basically no resemblance.

        • newidentity

I thought the same exact thing.

  • Dany

WERQ. My girl crush for her is now at the point to where I gasp whenever I see her on this site. This bitch fab.

  • Margo Channing

I love that last shot. Buoyed by beauty, I now feel ready to face the day.

  • Fitzperry

Those bracelets! The whole look is fantastic, but seriously, I want that jewelry.

    • Introspective

      me too!

  • FibonacciSequins

Dress is beautiful, styling is perfection, and Lizzy knows it.

  • Capt. Renault

My imaginary girlfriend is looking pretty effing fabulous. She always does, of course, but especially in this.

  • Jacquelyn

    WERQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She’s a goddess.

  • megohd

Rarely is the word STUNNING so accurate.

  • teensmom99

WERQ of course & kudos to Donna K who is back to form.

  • imperfectlaura

Special shoutout to her stylist Ilaria Urbinati who also styled Nina Dobrev’s Emmy’s Donna Karan Atelier from a couple years back. Donna Karan and her should have some kind of partnership because it seems to work out beautifully for all involved.

  • Chickadeep

    WOW. Wow. Stunning.

  • ashtangajunkie

Stunning. And a chic little updo, meaning some celebrities still do their hair! A win.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I would have loved the whole look anyway if that were just a simple black dress but the surprise of the white panel in the back just makes it even more beautiful. Absolutely flawless.

  • James

I hate cut outs of that type but that minor quibble aside she was gorgeous.

  • This is STUNNING. WERQ!!!

  • papillon

I really like the white draping – that was a pleasant surprise. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to sign off on cutouts though. I know it wouldn’t have gone with the look but I wish she had done something different with her hair. Either way, she looks lovely.

  • Julie Chase

    Best of the night.

  • Sophie

Why the white part? Is it just to get in on the black and white trend? She looks great anyway. I’m a bit sad that after the crazy colours she pulled off before, a black and white gown was what it took to get her to the special category.

  • Sarah

Stingray leather makes me feel weird. Looks cool; maybe not so nice.

  • Tanya Wade

She should be painted by Sargent, looking that damned regal.

  • Aidan B

J’ADORE. My favorite of the night.

  • Kathie

OUTSTANDING from head to toe!!! Well played!

  • JulieTy

It’s gorgeous until you see the train, and then it becomes spectacular. Best of 2014 list, I’m thinking — yes, Dearest Nephews? It looks like something from the Charles James show at the met. Grand slam home run!!

  • xmixiex

Stunning, just not crazy about her hair. The part is too deep.

  • higgledypiggledy

Love this. It reads like strength and confidence (as well as killer abs). The earrings are too rich-NYC-matron for my taste, though.

  • Lizzy was not playing last night. She was there to make a statement. And she succeeded.

  • Kate Andrews

I gasped too! And I gasped again checking out those bracelets. You win, honey.

  • Wink

    So very lovely. Perfection.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She looks GORGEOUS- polished, classy. She looks like a star, which is totally not usually the way she looks. I love it!

  • Melmmmendes

    Unreal. She looks amazing.

  • Gatto Nero

TLo said it all. A knockout.

  • Kitten Mittons

Not crazy about the eye makeup up close, but everything else is perfection. She is stunningly statuesque.

  • suzq

As fantastic as the dress looks on her, the white panel seems almost lost against that backdrop. Then, you sit on it all night. I said this in another post. She has the sort of face that can be totally transformed by makeup. I love the natural lip with the smoky eye.

  • The back it’s Perfection… bravo!

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

“Great dress Lizzy! What’s it made of?”

  • Lex

Dress is elegant and lovely but that is one poor makeup job, I’m sorry.

  • marlie

THIS was a winner’s dress. She looks outstanding. I love everything about this.

  • Beto

    Flawless, ‘nuf said.

  • MilaXX

Werq! It probably won’t get it, but this is my vote for best dressed. It’s so restrained and yet still elegant. Love the small pops of purple!

  • Raspberry2012

You know, I was stunned at how beautiful she looked from the front – then she turned around to show that white back of the dress, and just – AMAZING! She has to be voted the best dressed of the evening.

  • SugarSnap108

Gorgeous. If you’re gonna do cut-outs, this is how.

  • Everything about this is perfect. I love her.

  • NBG

Never saw this coming but snaps of respect to her. she brought it.

  • Fred Vaughn

  • Terri Terri

Gorgeous. The gown, the make-up, hair, jewelry. She looks so amazing.

  • Fred Vaughn

    Grown woman style!!

  • DuBey2

Wow: The clutch/bracelets/nails = perfection. And I am thrilled to see someone trotting out some major gemstones again at an awards shows. Major gems(I assume diamonds) done Right. i.e. paired with the RIGHT Gown & hair. WERQ

  • yethica

I feel like this looks like an updated version of something one would have seen on royalty in the middle of the last century… Which means I love it.

  • ailujailuj

Womanly is so right—and so in character. She has been one of my favs since that goofy cant remember the name of it tv show with the 3 sisters (one of them was Jennifer Esposito, another one of my delicious crushings). This is such a regal look for her… shoes? and is that Saucy Jack from Butter she’s wearing?

  • HeisenbergHattie

    100% agree. Wowza.

  • somebody blonde

I love the dress, but I love that jewelry more. If I were a multimillionaire I would totally buy those earrings, they’re so gorgeous!

  • KinoEye

Absolutely stunning. This does speak volumes about her taste, something that’s been sorely lacking on the RC recently.

  • Laura Livingston

It looks like what Julia Roberts should have worn. When she was getting an Oscar. Great styling.

  • Agreed. Just glorious. And I still miss ‘Party Down.’

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Gorgeous-simply perfection. My first view of this was a photo in the NYT this morning, and I love the back of this look so much. WERQ! Double snaps and sashay away!

  • Joey Melliza

    brava miss thang!

  • LibKat

Loved it til I got to the white train. I just hate those butt surprise dresses.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Fabulous. You go, Lizzy Caplan.

  • GeoDiva

    Best of the night!

  • evave2

What is the difference between Atelier and Couture and Vintage in fashion terms? Because I would describe Donna Karan as ready-to-wear mostly but this is beyond THAT status and it is beautiful. I really love the white back. Whatever the material is it looks so soft.

Everything about her looks spot-on. I love the hair and make-up.

  • conniemd

Throwing out some Audrey Hepburn style. Says “she’s a lady.”

  • elirt

Wow! That last shot – definitely a “be me” moment!

  • Akemi

  • Tricia

I haven’t seen Masters of Sex yet but I am so smitten with this woman. “Knowing and confident” are perfect adjectives for this dress and for her.

  • LadyVimes

I don’t usually like in-cut sides, or sheer in skirts, but this is absolutely gorgeous. Favorite of the night.

  • kim bunchalastnames

she’s stunning. and this look is stunning. she is stunning squared.

  • withbreaththatisbated

Oh my god, I didn’t even see the white back until that last picture. GORGEOUS. She’s the winner for me.

  • Joanne Abrams

Total WERQ! Wow, fabulous flawless is right!

  • Call me Bee

Everything is perfect, except it’s too long. Dragging on the ground is not a good look. It detracts from the lines of any gown. I will not stop griping until the tailors in Hollywood figure this out.

  • PastryGoddess

    My fave

  • countervail

This should be in the award show hall of fame.

  • gloriana232

Also, kind of reminds me of Marion Cotillard.

  • jorinde

    Rachel Mencken.

  • GenieinTX

I love those very slight touches of red. It brings so much to the black and white. And the dress, just gorgeous. Total fab all the way around

  • Susan Carson

  • wontons

Hate the hair on her and the overly smoky eyes. Spouse said, “She looks better on the show.” But hey, the dress is stunning and suits her body really well.

  • Jacob Bowen

This dress is STUNNING but her accessories and hair/makeup are what take this to the next level!

  • PinkyK

  • Man Dala

She was definitely my favourite of the night.

  • GemFemme

This is Academy Award red carpet level dressing. Perfect.

  • Jecca2244

    go Ilaria Urbinati go!!

  • Michelle Lim

SWOON. I was wishing all night that she would win just so she can go up and give a speech in THAT dress. That’s THE DRESS to wear when you win an award.

  • lorepottter

Maybe she didnt win the emmy, but my lady you won everything else, that dress is perfect, glamorous, stunning, gorgeous, the best dress definitely

  • livesarah

Oh yes, I would not mind looking like that! Love that hairstyle on her, she looks really pulled together.

  • quiltrx

Just gorgeous–and her stance and carriage (something SO many ladystars these days lack) really sell the look to perfection.

  • She’s so beautiful I just can’t. Fantastic look.

  • MarissaLG

Absolutely one of the best dressed of the night. Stunner!

    • AzSportsGirl

…of the YEAR.. including Oscars and Cannes.. usually two of my favorite Red Carpet events.

  • MannahattaMamma

like Lena Headly, in a different wheelhouse but both are captains of their own ships. Which is a totally capsized metaphor, but you know what I mean. I hope. Fabulosity.

  • Clair Ellis

  • EEKstl

STUH-NING. WERQ as far as I’m concerned.

  • Jennifer Ford

GORgeous. I did a little gasp at the back view and whispered, “It gets better!”
