Amy Adams in Los Angeles

Posted on August 11, 2014

This is not a look we would have associated with her.

And by that we mean if we saw this look, we’d probably never have said “Oh, that’s totally something Amy Adams would wear.” Then again, we don’t have enough of a sense of her casual style. But the gauntlet has been thrown down by people like Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon and now everyone’s gotta get in on the sidewalk promenade craze. Not that we’d consider this a highly styled look – at least not in the “perfect country club wife” drag of Reese or “Princess of New York” drag of Taylor. But she does look nicely put together. And while we share our fairy blogsisters’ belief that leggings are not pants, the addition of the scarf, fabulous sandals and look-at-my-purse purse  to these basic items gives the whole look an “internationally famous dance teacher” vibe that suits her surprisingly well. If she wanted to, she could easily bring this up to casual daytime chic with a little bit of hair and jewelry attention.

While I agree that leggings are not pants (though like all rules, there are exceptions), THIS is what a (stylish) woman looks like when she leaves the gym!!! Take note Taylor: no one thinks you actually worked out.

      • Guest

        Leggings are pants. Fight me.

        • http://batman-news.com ChristopherM

Really? You’re willing to fight over looking like a zepplin in a condom? Leggings are nothing but footless tights. You are basically walking around in panty hose. But if you want to take fashion cues from Christina Aguilera, please enjoy.

          • Bexxx

Sounds like advice from someone who’s never worn leggings. You enjoy your constricting jeans and I will sit here, quad muscles glistening in the sunlight, comfy as balls.

          • myandyleigh

Listen. When I charge into Walgreen’s at 10:58pm because I am in desperate need of a can of cheese puffs and a Dove bar and I’m wearing a giant t-shirt, a pair of flip flops and a pair of leggings, those leggings are definitely pants. Trust.

            • Emily Smith

I’m usually after klondike bars and ruffles and french onion dip in that situation, but yes. Also, bras are optional at that point.

            • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

              MY PEOPLE

        • bhl_1123

Generally, leggings are an accessory, meant to keep your legs warm or your thighs covered when your skirt/dress/longshirt is just a bit too short to be worn sans leggings. That is not to say that there aren’t exceptions, but essentially leggings should not be the major component of an outfit–mortals cannot handle it and there are a zillion exhibits online to prove it. That being said as long as you can’t see through them and you are at the gym (kudos to you for working out–make sure to have a friend do the lulu bend-check) or pregnant (you’re carry a tiny human, wear what feels good–unless you are on a red carpet).

        • barbarienne

I will die with you on this hill! You have my axe!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I want to be on your side so desperately because of that line. But… too many undies seen through leggings makes that impossible for me.

            • barbarienne

I will fight poorly worn leggings. But I don’t wear mine tight enough to see through! Good lord, what a thought. Slightly loose leggings of an opaque knit are a modest, reasonable alternative to walking around in sweatpants. Do I prefer them with a longer top? Yes, of course. But as long as the shirt hits the hips, I’m fine with it.

Some of it is people wearing cheapass clothes. Back in the 80s leggings were a thicker material, because they weren’t manufactured to be disposable clothing selling for less than the price of a Happy Meal.

ETA: Ms. Adams’s look to be of sufficient opacity, and her shirt of minimum acceptable length.

            • bhl_1123

My general rule is that the shirt should pass the crotch and cover the ass.

            • Crystal

Real leggings aren’t see through. Footless tights are. People keep manufacturing/wearing footless tights and calling them leggings.

            • J. Preposterice

right?? I own both leggings (opaque, about as thick as my yoga pants) and footless tights (“opaque”, as thick as, well, TIGHTS). Only one of these two types of clothing is OK to wear out of the house accompanied only by a long tee. The other one needs an additional bottom layer.

          • suzanne77

            And my bow!!!!

        • heartbot

I always thought the BEST thing about wearing leggings is that they aren’t pants. I hate pants. I LOVE leggings.

    • alyce1213

She looks like she didn’t expect to be photographed, but just put herself together presentably after a workout. Very nice, Amy.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

This strikes me as a fine casual look.

        • Kent Roby

I think she looks good, though I feel like Amy is Debra Messing with us.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I like to think that Amy is wearing this thinking, “Reese can just keep on that parking lot sh#t, but I’m really keeping it real”.

    • Gatto Nero

I appreciate that this is a relaxed look, but I can’t get onboard with leggings as pants.

      • Sarah

Me either, but in this case, I suspect that she may actually *gasp* have BEEN working out, in which case I’ll give her a pass, especially if she’s on her way home.

        • halleygee

Exactly! She just worked out, really doubt she’s concerned with what color her scarf is.

      • Anna

I live close to my gym, so I’m guilty of being out and about in my tights like Amy here after a workout or a run.

      • Wink

Maybe she’s on her way home from the gym, and the leggings-as-pants wasn’t an all-day outfit.

    • HeisenbergHattie

IN THE GYM …. leggings ARE pants.

      • Anna

        Truth.

      • juniper

are work out pants considered leggings? I’m asking.

I’ve been avidly against the leggings as pants trend but have legitimate black workout pants that could be confused with leggings unless you touch them and realize how thick the fabric is- because *gasp* they aren’t see through like tights or leggings.

or am i just kidding myself and have fallen in the rabbit hole?

        • Janice Bartels

Nope, I’m with you Juniper. Although I still usually follow bhl’s crotch and ass rule in workout pants.

          • juniper

            bhl?

            • Janice Bartels

One of the posts above- username bhl_1123

            • juniper

              oh, duh. thanks!

    • sienna elm

She *actually* looks like she did come from the gym! Way to knock it out of the park Amy!

    • Nikko Viquiera

Taylor Swift, take notes, this is how people actually look like when they leave the gym.

      • http://wardrobemalfunctioned.tumblr.com Yaysita

Yes, she looks like an actual person as opposed to a perfectly composed/fabricated mannequin that is Swift in her post “workout” struts.

And there is stuff inside her purse, she is actually utilising said accessory for its intended purposes. Shocking!

    • Alexis Wenceslao

Those bunions are sexy. I have those too and they’re sexy as hell. Sandals look cheap, though.

    • FibonacciSequins

She looks like she’s walking out of a yoga class, but she looks good doing it. I would only have changed the scarf color to something not so close to the color of her tank top.

      • Kent Roby

Ha, I thought that was actually part of the top.

        • littlemac8

I agree, it’s part of the top! It looks like a partially detached really drapey cowl neck.

    • Jacob Bowen

I would like a “look at my purse” purse…especially this one.

    • Freynika

I love that she looks like she might have actually just left a gym, unlike Taylor Swift who’s gym is apparently located inside a giant black SUV. I agree, leggings aren’t pants (except for on a toddler), but they don’t bother me on her, since it looks like she’s actually coming from a gym and the rest of her clothes are just as casual. Makes it look like she’s going home to put on some real clothes.

    • Anna

She actually looks like she worked out! What trickery is this?!

    • Freynika

Does anyone know who the bag is by?

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

No kidding! It’s great. Love the colors.

        • Kathryn

I am wondering the same thing – anyone know?

    • StelledelMare

I too am against leggings as pants for everyday wear unless you’re wearing a tunic type of top. The top has to go past your butt enough to not be a shirt but not long enough to necessarily be a dress. But around here people like to wear them with regular tshirts and it’s just a big no. But anyway, Taylor Swift definitely needs to take a look at this. Because not only does she actually look like she left the gym (and she looks great), her purse is also not empty.

      • Alana

The top juuuuuust covers her bum. I checked.

      • Aidan B

100% with you on the “butt must be totally covered for leggings to be considered pants” rule. I don’t want to see your panty lines, or, God forbid, anything else.

    • @Biting Panda

I finally got around to watching American Hustle. She was the best part about it.
As for as her on the go look here, she’s got the body for it, she’s got the natural vibe to her, I’m not mad at anything she’s doing here.

      • mommyca

I just saw it again this w-e… She was definitely awesome!

      • MartyBellerMask

I admit, I was charmed by Bradley Cooper and his perm. And Louis CK was hilarious.

        • Modeniete

I thought they were all great (love Amy Adams), but I’m glad someone else noticed what a great job Louis CK did.
I have to admit Jennifer Lawrence totally cracked me up.

And I honestly thought Christian Bale should have gotten an Oscar for what he did — independent of the pot belly.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Leaving the gym in exercise appropriate clothes? GASP!

    • bassfemme

The bunhead is confirmation of just working out. It looks like she threw on a scarf and those beautiful Tory Burch sandals and said, “Taylor, THIS is post exercise style.”

    • imspinningaround

      Oh, her poor feet.

    • MilaXX

Not bad. She could use some work on the bag pimiping, but she almost looks like a yoga mom.

      • marlie

I think she realizes how ludicrous the whole bag-pimping thing is, and is just hamming it up at this point. Makes me like her even more.

        • Lower L

I love the awkward pose in Photo #4. It has made my morning.

    • Rhonda Shore

She might have worn the leggings for her work out. The freshly scrubbed look also suggests a real workout.

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

      Love it!

    • decormaven

Right on- if she had slipped on some killer earrings and smoothed the hair a bit, she could ace the parking lot pap stroll.

    • Jaeda Laurez

As a post-workout outfit, this is great. This is a nice “I just finished yoga and now i’m going to run to the store without embarrassing myself” outfit.

    • Crystal

      I think she looks good!!!

I think the reason I appreciate Reese’s parking lot tour more than Taylor’s is while it is slightly ridiculous to wear 4 inch heels and a sheath dress to Whole Foods- I know people who do it. Whereas I know NO ONE who wears couture on their way out of the gym. Literally no one.

      • Alloy Jane

Right? Shit, in my home country, El Salvador, there are women who wear high heels and full makeup every day, and that is a tiny, subtropical volcanic country = hills & humidity. It is a bit ridiculous and totally inconvenient-seeming, but it happens.

    • Christine Hart

I wonder if she went to Pure Barre?

    • whaddami

wow, this makes me like AA a whole lot more than her RC outings. Makes me wonder what other looks she might more happily explore in more formal settings.

    • Imasewsure

This is what actual Beverly Hills rich ladies where to the gym/lunch. Props for that at least. She looks cute… and in LA, leggings are formal wear

    • JR Labrador

In her mind’s eye, this is what Debra Messing thinks Debra Messing looks like.

      • boweryboy

        meow

        Nailed it.

    • ChiKat67

I actually believe she’s just left the gym. Appropriate outfit? Check. Makeup free face? Check. Post gym ponytail & sunglasses? Check and check! Well done.

    • queeniethebold

At least she looks as if she is actually, you know, emerging from a workout, unlike that prisspot Taylor Swift.

    • marlie

See, Taylor, THIS is what people look like going to/coming from the gym. And it’s still an adorable (casual, gym and/or errand-running) look.

    • Cathy S

I love those sandals. How many hundreds of dollars do I have to pay for so little shoe?

    • SewingSiren

She can’t decide the best way to showcase that bag.

      • MRC210

I think she’s just having a little fun, mocking the classic “look at my purse” poses.

    • sherrietee

I think it’s awesome that it looks like she was actually working out rather than just being spotted leaving a gym.

    • Anique Ashraf

You know what, you’re right! I don’t think I’ve ever noticed since she dresses so severe and saturated all the time, but she definitely has the face to pull off airy/earthy pretty. She should wear more bohemian stuff. It looks good on her.

    • boweryboy

Since the caption says this is after a workout session, I’ll give her a pass. At least she actually looks like she left the gym, unlike another ladystar who I will not name.

    • FoxInSocks

The latest Hollywood workout craze – cardio, followed by a circuit of purse-displaying calisthenics.

    • ThaliaMenninger

She looks fantastic. Like a real person living a real life. Bravo, Amy!

    • Steve Ek

It might be my imagination, but it looks like she actually has, you know, stuff in her purse (and quite a bit of it). Another lesson Ms. Swift might want to learn.

    • Trickytrisha

She’s a real person! Bunions and all. Pretty darned refreshing in this day and age of Tay Tays and Reeses.

      • MRC210

First J-Lo and now Amy … kind of comforting to know that famous people have bunions too. But much as l love the shoes, they’re too close to flip-flops for me and I have a thing about wearing flip-flops anywhere but the beach … it just seems gross. Everything else about her is perfect, especially the smile.

      • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

This! Its a bit of a relief to see celebrities with messed up feet just like mine. I usually avoid that style of shoe she is wearing because it makes them so obvious….but if she doesn’t give a damn maybe I shouldnt either

    • tbarranti

Now this *actually* looks like a workout outfit! Take note, other starlets.

    • kimmeister

That’s a lot of scarf for a sleeveless outfit with barely-there sandals.

    • flamingoNW

      It’s very LA

    • greymain

She is COMPLETELY believable unlike some who will remain nameless…..leaving the gym, hair up, no makeup…comfy. Go girl!

    • Melissa Brogan

Like other BKs, this look makes me think she actually did just work out & take a gym shower, so I give her a pass on leggings-as-pants and super casual hair and jewelry.

    • bessann28

Uhhh… this “outfit” is terrible. Not just for the leggings, but the shirt doesn’t go at all. And black sandals with two different shades of navy blue… just… no.

    • Bexxx

I kinda can’t believe people are criticizing the leggings, scarf, and flip flops. She’s leaving the gym. Do people actually change after they leave the gym? Genuine question.

      • ktr33

        Taylor. Swift.

    • Alexis Wenceslao

      Love her look!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Yeah she looks like half the girls I went to law school with when they decided to go straight from workout to class, or vice-versa.

Re: leggings as pants, well, it depends on the leggings for me (and I used to be super “NO LEGGINGS AS PANTS” so I’m a bit of a convert) – BlackMilk* and other printed leggings brands use a heavier weight of spandex than I’d seen in leggings before – sort of like a cross between bathing-suit material and Spanx – that smooths out lumps and covers up underwear (unless it’s super light-colored, in which case more or less the same problem as tight white jeans). I still prefer it with a long tshirt, but those thicker leggings are closer to tight pleather pants than the more common, often transparent cotton varieties. Just my $.02

*I loved Blackmilk but I can’t buy in good faith anymore because their founders and social media team are such blatant assholes, and this isn’t even in reference to when the founder sic’d his fans on TLo like the internet troll he is; plus the designs have gotten way too juvenile and/or stock imagey for me. But I still love the leggings I have that are inspirated by Japanese woodcuts, Klimt, Mucha, stained glass, Tetris, and other cool designs. There are still some leggings I covet on their site but they’ve been engaged in such shady business practices that I just can’t.

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

This is what most people wear when leaving the gym. Totally appropriate!

      • golden_valley

Totally agree! This is what regular people wear from the gym. She might even have tucked her gym shoes in that bag!

    • Susan Velazquez

I think this would have been better if she wore plain black leggings or capris, not jeggings.Plus a scarf in a brighter color or pattern–come on, Amy it’s still summer!

    • Modeniete

This woman is seriously underdressed for a post-workout look. Cf. Swift, Taylor.

    • E. D.

Leggings are not pants. “Jeggings” are also not pants.

    • gitchygitchymama

Why is it a woman cannot leave home unless she’s got at least 4pounds of processed lambskin strapped to herself?
      Soooooo over Handbags-Hags.

    • frannyprof

At least she looks like she actually did something at the gym other than apply makeup a la Ms. Swift. This is very LA daytime running errands chic.

    • Shawn EH

Supercute, and points for actually using the purse!

    • cwade1211

Poor Amy has bad bunions. As a relative of someone with equally bad bunions, I really sympathize and that’s no joke.

      • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Ouch! I just noticed them. That’s some bad business to get those corrected.

    • HeatherMcIlrath

what are they always pointing at?!?! what is out there? they don’t look at it but they point! is this a conspiracy theroy in the making?

    • LeelaST

Actually looks like she came from a workout – truth in advertising! Leggings are great – but they do require a longer top unless you’re model thin.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

WHO MAKES THE BAG I NEED THE BAG

    • Ali2044

Unlike Tay Tay, this is a woman who believably could be leaving a gym.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I will add to the consensus here that THIS is the way you walk out of a gym.
