Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Stella McCartney Resort 2015 Presentation

Posted on June 10, 2014

As per usual, Miss Maggie’s less formal style tends to trump virtually all of her red carpet appearances. We LOVE this on her.

And we normally HATE handkerchief hems. Irrationally, we admit.

It’s the denim jacket which really makes the look, we’re thinking. It works perfectly as a counter to that skirt. Especially since, from what little we can see of it, we’re not sure we’d like the top part of this dress. And we’re not sure black pumps were the best choice to make. Even so, it’s all coming together in a very breezy, chic, downtown kinda way and we’re here for that. Nicely done, Maggie. Attagirl.

      Her hair be bangin’.

      It’s a great, casual look.

      Lots of Stella lately.

      • Qitkat

Stella, yes, the dress that Vera Farmiga wore at the Tonys was almost my favorite look of the evening.

      • Judy_S

But is the dress by Stella? I love it (on Maggie!) but it doesn’t look like her work.

        • Jennica Brocious

It looks like dresses from her spring collection, not an exact match but I’d assume it’s a Stella.

          • Judy_S

OK, then things are looking up. I like that dress.

    • thecitysleeps

I love the hair! Those shoes just don’t go though! Light brown platform wedges and I’m in.

      • smallgirlsaretrouble

Yes, that’s the exact footwear this look needs.

    • marlie

I hate the jacket, but I love everything else. Dress, shoes, purse, hair… attagirl.

      • kimmeister

I’d like the jacket in a darker wash.

        • Raspberry2012

Yeah, that’s literally my only quibble about the outfit – I’d do the jacket in a bit darker of a wash, but even this looks really good.

    • StelledelMare

As someone who loves handkerchief hems, I need that dress in my life.

    • mimi

I don’t like that drop waist though. It looks awkward, especially in that last picture. It just cuts off her ass.

    • MilaXX

That is a really cute look! I’d wear that but pair it with a pair of white slip on vans or dress it up with wedges. Now that I think about it, I think it would look better if she was wearing wedges instead of the black pumps.

      • Tracy_Flick

Totally agree. Those shoes were sort of a needle scratch. There are so many fab sandals/wedges/etc that would have worked better. But over all it’s adorable and looks comfy as hell.

      • lunchcoma

Yeah, I like the shoes, but they seem too sharp and formal for everything else she’s wearing. Something a little more casual would have pulled it together better.

    • FibonacciSequins

Count me as irrational too, I guess. But this handkerchief hem looks great in motion. Long legs and high heels for the assist.

The jean jacket gives the outfit some kind of cool, street panache. And I was complaining about her hair at the Tonys but her tousled pixie works perfectly here.

    • Anna

I’m particularly fond of throwing on a denim jacket over pretty much everything, so I’m really digging this look.

Also, I saw some photos of this collection and…I don’t hate it. A lot of it is actually in MG’s wheelhouse (handkerchief hems galore), and I think would look good her.

    • kimmeister

I like the top 2 patterns mixed together, and the bottom 2 together, but not the top 2 with the bottom 2. Dang, I sound picky. I also wish she filled in her brows a bit more. Cute purse though.

    • Sarah

Those pumps are all Serious Executive and the rest of her outfit is Free Spirited Lady. Still, I like it. Cute prints, good hair.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I just love Maggie to death. She always looks like someone it would be fun to hang out with. Don’t love the shoes, but everything else is great.

    • Alyssa

This is so her look. I agree with others that wedges instead of pumps would have been a better choice. I’m suddenly feeling the need for a good maxi dress/skirt with a handkerchief hem!

    • http://ediblecville.blogspot.com Libby

This would be much cuter with wedgies. In the feet area I mean ;)

    • Raspberry2012

Wow, that is really cute, they somehow work together! Not loving the haircolor, though – she has a great complexion for her usual dark hair, but I do love the cute super-short cut.

      • decormaven

The cut is especially appealing on her. Thumbs up!

    • boweryboy

Is she wearing Stella McCartney? Because that dress is … something, and I’m usually on board with pattern mixing.

    • nannypoo

The shoes are too dressy, but otherwise this is so cute that I wish I were wearing it.

    • teensmom99

Resort collections should be called Maggie G. collections–they are perfect for her. Great to see her looking so good.

    • NBG

Not sure I am loving where the dropped waist hits her but I an digging the hair.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I can’t make up my mind about her hair. It’s neither here nor there in my opinion. Is it “done”, or is that bed-head? I can’t tell, and that bothers me.

    • Gatto Nero

Really cute, and very true to her style.

    • jonnyf8

I don’t even know her anymore. I’m starting to like her!! I’m going to vote yes on the shoes. I think they had an edge of polish to the whole look.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Shit! I have to move the car Wednesday night.

    • Qitkat

As much as I love Maggie, I’m not loving this, except for the faded jeans jacket, which every time I throw mine on, I feel great, no matter what else I’m wearing. But she looks happy and to be having fun.

    • GillianHolroyd

Sorry it looks like a bed spread. Like a bed spread that got caught up in her panties. Love her hair.

    • Pterodactyl111

      No, I LOVE the shoes.

    • Shalhevet

The shoes have nothing to do with tge rest of this outfit.

    • msdamselfly

Dont really agree. The outfit looks very mismatched.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Not feeling the outfit, but she’s one of my girl crushes, so I’ll let it go.

      • t bell

Ditto to both your observations even if I’m a boy.

    • ashtangajunkie

The shoes make me think of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ when Stanley Tucci tosses a pair of black slingbacks to Hathaway to put on with her lumpy sweater and skirt. It’s like someone didn’t care if they matched, just as long as they replaced what she had on before.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Are those pumps black, or navy blue?

    • Imasewsure

I hate those skirts – all of them… except this one which is so cute on our dear Maggie. Love it when she gets it right!!

    • LadyVimes

I think the handkerchief skirt works because it’s in motion. They always look a bit silly when they’re just hanging.

    • smayper

Going against the flow here…I hate that skirt. It just looks like way too much fabric and is giving me tablecloth. Which is what my mom used to call my long patterned skirts in the 80s.

    • Lisalady161

OMG, two SM looks in a row (her & Emmy) that I don’t hate out of hand! Is the world ending?

    • Danielle

I agree, the jacket helps break up the pop art pattern. Hair is killah.

    • Imma Mäder

what a cute look! I think the fabric (and the low-key, breezy feel) is really perfect for a handkerchief hem. Usually not a big fan, especially on gowns

    • lynnlee

I don’t see it at all! To me it looks like she grabbed three unrelated things off the floor of her closet and never looked in a mirror. Grabbed any old purse, ran her fingers through her hair and then went out in public. Plus, the skirt sits on her funny. I feel so left out.

      • another_laura

Don’t feel lonely, darling, let’s go sit in the grumpy corner together and have cocktails.

    • another_laura

Sorry, but no. It’s not irrational hatred, when it comes to handkerchief hems. They are awful. Whatever it’s made of, the fabric in the skirt looks like cheap “doubleknit” from the 70s and believe me, I made quite a few dresses from that stuff in the 70s. The mix of prints is ugly.

    • Miss wks

sorry Mags…those shoes totally murder the outfit…

    • SewingSiren

Needs shit kicking boots. Hee Haw.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

There’s a lot going on in that dress, most of which doesn’t work for me; the best thing about the dress for me is the movement-then it has something going for it.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I love this outfit – well, except the shoes. I’d have gone with a low-cut bootie – something that plunges along the top of the foot to elongate the leg while still having a boot shape. I have the perfect pair. Gimme your outfit, Maggie.

She’s one of the celebrity comparisons I have gotten for my looks sometimes (which I deeply side-eye) but her hair here actually makes me want to go redhead, so good on you Mags, ya look good.

    • livesarah

I was going to say, except for the shoes! A pair of brown leather hippie sandals would even have been a better choice here.

    • Mink Carlyle

The fact that she combines those shoes with that jacket with that purse shows that she has absolute zero inate style.

    • ktr33

I don’t see what the Uncles see. I feel like I’m looking at the Emperor’s New Clothes. I cannot unhate handkerchief hems, black lizardy looking pumps with a hippie-style dress? huh? wha? Maybe some high espadrilles with ankle ties? which would kind of bookend the look with the jeans jacket? and then, oh no! that bag? not with this!

    • Kent Roby

      That’s so perfectly Maggie.

    • Kelly

The shoes ruin it. They SO do not go.

    • Chuck Barthelme

The shoes are a tad too formal for the look, imho. But otherwise good look.

    • MaggieMae

Oh, those shoes do not go with the rest.

    • Super_Red

wow. this is my favorite thing I’ve ever seen on Maggie. Normally I cringe. But that could be because she is actually smiling here.

    • melanie0866

She is one of my favorite actresses and it makes me so happy to see her looking cute, instead of like a sad 65-year-old substitute teacher.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

      she has the cutest smile.
      shoes don’t match.

    • Akemi

I love this, and I want it.

    • bringbackbeatles

I love this dress! I think the jean jacket was a great choice. She looks great although I’m not a big fan of the haircut, but that’s just my personal taste. I do agree with the uncles that the black pumps were perhaps not the best choice. Everything else looks so good I didn’t even notice the pumps at first.
