Downton Abbey Ladies at the Monaco Television Festival

Posted on June 11, 2014

Because it would be weird titling this post “Downton Abbey Servants at the Monaco Television Festival.”

Oh, dear. Okay, then. Sophie, that’s a rather drab-looking thing you’ve got on there, and pairing neon yellow pumps with it only made it worse. Lesley, we’re digging the super-sassy shoes. It’s just that they don’t particularly go with your outfit. Joanne, that skirt’s a little too precious for our tastes. And it looks like wallpaper.

Nicely done, ladies. You’ve all rebounded well. Sophie? Love it. That’s your color, girl. Joanne? Bringing the drama with that skirt. Lesley? Keeping it simple but looking the most elegant of all.

But ladies? Your footwear is making us cringe.

That turquoise is stunning on Sophie. You are right, that’s her color. I’ve concluded that the path of least frustration is to simply avoid looking at anyone’s feet…it’s simply depressing 90% of the time.

    • MilaXX

In the first picture the only outfit I like is Leslie’s, but all the shoes are a fail. They all rallied back in the second shoe, but still failed in the foot wear department.

    • Mothra

Joanne’s eye make up is just too heavy with that lovely blond hair.

      • teensmom99

And I’m not a fan of the over-straight over-bleached hair. Sorry, I know she plays a saint but I still can’t.

        • Jecca2244

do you think she wears a wig on the show? I thought they were filming now, but maybe not. and that doesn’t look like 1920s hair.

          • teensmom99

She must. I have to say that I am not always great at detecting wigs (though I can detect plastic surgery form a mile!).

            • AnneElliot

I think they’re probably all wearing wigs, at least the upstairs ladies. It’s too much trouble to keep the period hairstyles consistent.

            • scoobynacks

Yeah I think I’ve heard about wig wearing as regards Downton, I’m just not sure who does.

          • Constant Reader

I thought Anna had the 1920s hair done wavy in front and with a low, wide bun at the back of the head. Kind of the Nod To Fashion Without Going Full-On Flapper that was often worn then. It’s definitely darker on the show, though.

        • littlemac8

That hair on Joanne is awful. It’s too light for her complexion and looks unhealthy. It horrifies me that she thinks that is becoming.

        • Rhonda Shore

The over-straight looks-ironed hair appears to be a trend…seen lots of it lately.

    • sugarkane105

It may be a bit twee, but I am DIGGIN that pink skirt on Joanne. Also love all three dresses in the second set. But you’d think with three relatively basic dresses, they’d choose some more interesting footwear.

      • shopgirl716

Completely agree about the pink skirt. And Joanne’s feet look a little tortured in the second photo.

      • Heather

Yeah, I want to own that pink skirt. It’s awesome and very much my taste.

    • teensmom99

Hate to say it but the Brits often get the footwear wrong. I’ve noticed it IRL, too.

    • lynnlee

Lesley’s footwear makes it seem as if she’d like a ltiny bit edgier look than she thinks she can wear for her size and age. I don’t mean that snarkily. I’m 51 and shaped a lot like her, and the things I’d like to wear don’t come in my size or seem wrong for my age.

      • Sophie

Well I’d like to see what she’d wear if she could, because I already love the shoes!

      • sundaynightaddict

I have a strange sort of respect for celebs who wear what are probably comfortable shoes (I can say that as a woman of a certain size, chunky shoes are typically more comfortable) – or sort of unfashionable shoes that they happen to like. Christina Hendricks falls into this category for me. I’d like to think I’d be one of those broads if I was a star. As a regular peon near 40, I have made a vow to myself that I will never again wear miserable shoes or pinchy bras.

    • viridian61

Good make up choices too – it’s there, but not too much. Leslie looks great.

    • JP

      Yes, bad shoes all around!

I love the Tiffany blue dress.

      • smayper

Good call on naming the color! Exactly right.

    • marlie

The first set of photos make me sad, but the ladies really nailed it in the second set. Brava, ladies!

    • thatch pheasant

Precious baby girls and wonderful actresses. Who cares what they’re wearing? Looking forward to the new season.

    • quiltrx

My favorite thing is the precious, wallpaper skirt!

      • scoobynacks

I love it even though I know and understand exactly what’s wrong with it. It just entertains me to look at in pictures.

    • Julie Parr

Second outfit: Joanne’s shoes look like they are digging into her feet and making her bleed. I feel for her.

      • shopgirl716

I noticed that too. I want to pull her aside and hand her some Band Aids.

    • Bridget Smith

Sophie McShera’s make-up is magic. Joanne Froggatt’s is making me sad.

      • Bridget Smith

Seriously, Sophie, give your make-up artist a raise. Your face is the first thing I notice in all these photos – in a good way.

      • kimmeister

Sophie’s hair in the first picture, however, is decidedly unmagical.

    • shopgirl716

They look like fun. I want them to come over, drink a lot of wine and dish about their co stars.

    • FibonacciSequins

Yes, yes and yes to all your style notes. The DA ladies always look like they have a good time together. Makes my fangirl heart happy!

    • LadyVimes

The bleach blonde center part straightened within an inch of its life hair on Joanne is AWFUL.

    • Bert Keeter

Please send them back to Downton…. They aren’t making it in the 21st century….

    • crash1212

Mrs. Patmore’s shoes in the first look FTW. Can’t wait for the new season of Downton Abbey!

    • msdamselfly

I love, love, love all of these pictures but I especially like the first ones. They are all so adorable and having so much fun that the clothes look great too. I love Joanne in the pink and black dress, love Leslie’s orange shoes and think Sophie looks dreamy in that nightie/dress. And I think it’s a gas that they are posing with Prince Albert!

    • boweryboy

I’m more perturbed by the fact that Albert is a prince yet he can’t get his pants properly hemmed.

      • lmhess

…and his pants don’t go with his jacket…poor man.

        • boweryboy

I was so distracted by the puddles of fabric around his feet that I didn’t notice. For shame Albert, for shame.

      • smayper

True! And I keep thinking that Daisy is loving the fact that she looks better than, and is hugging, a prince.

      • KinoEye

Was about to type the same thing. It’s always frustrating when men in positions of power dial it in, because dressing well is a big (and simple) part of their job. Not to mention, if the Princess of Monaco showed up in an ill-fitting gown, she’d be raked over the coals.

Reminds me of when I had to attend a ceremony where a local politician presented the family of a dead soldier with several medals, including the Purple Heart. His suit looked like he’d slept in it for a week and the fabric pooled at his ankles. I was thoroughly disgusted.

    • smh4748

I really like Joanne’s pink skirt! Going to disagree with the uncles on that one. Sophie’s first dress is tragic though, and I’d be totally ok if I didn’t see any actress’ midriff outside of a beach photo for the rest of time.

I love Sophie’s second dress though. It looks like the fit might be a teeny bit off (I think she’s a bit larger chested, and it seems like that is making the dress tent away from her midsection a little more than it should be) but boy is that a beautiful color. Stop wearing elderly florals and find more pretty colors and silhouettes please!

      • smayper

SO with you on the midriff stuff.

        • demidaemon

I am with the both of you on the midriff stuff.

    • lmhess

Agreed! Great dresses that flatter the ladies…footwear? Not so much. As a former fashion retailer, I cringe over shoes that don’t go with the dress. But thanks for the photos…they are lovely ladies.

      • kimmeister

As a person with functional eyes, I cringe over shoes that don’g to with the dress.

    • Gatto Nero

The clothing overall is pretty dismal, though I kind of like Froggatt’s skirt in the first shot.
But I love the shot of them laughing.

    • icm

When did Albert get so old?

    • stacey

Sophie and Peggy Moss….separated at birth?

      • AnneElliot

They could play sisters, definitely. She looks so pretty.

    • AnneElliot

The footwear in the second set — my thoughts EX–AAAACTLY. Especially Joanne’s horrible silly putty peep toes. Could not hate those shoes more.

      • kimmeister

I hate Sophie’s platform putty Minnie Mouse shoes more.

    • Alicia

Joanne Froggatt always looks so Northern when she’s in her own clothes. She looks like she could slide in with the ladies at Aintree and no one would notice.

    • Kelly

I don’t always agree with you 100%, TLo, but I do this time. You’ve totally nailed every aspect of these outfits. As always, I love seeing the DA ladies get their due. They always seem like they are having a wonderful time, which is such a refreshing change from the world of blasé celebs who so often look as if they’d rather be anywhere else but on the red carpet wearing dazzling clothes and being feted. (Yeah, I’m sure that even RC galas get old after a while, but hell, these people are actors. They should be able at least to *pretend* not to be bored and above it all.) Thank you, Sophie and Lesley and Joanne!

      • lobsterlen

I could be wrong about this and I am sure there is exceptions.

Overall celebrities from the UK seem much more grateful and humble about their celebrity status.

        • demidaemon

I was just thinking about this the other day and had the same thought, that basically European and Australian celebs, in general, seem more grateful, humble, and enjoyable as public figures than the majority of American celebs.

    • carnush

I miss them. They all look divine, especially Mrs. Patmore.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Albert? Oh, no. One of them’s pregnant for sure.

    • Miss Atomic

Can’t blame Leslie for rockin’ a wedge. With my problem feet and despise for heels, wedges are the only way you’ll get me in a “heel”.

I think they all look divine. I wish Sophie’s first dress was a bit more snug to make it appear less night-gown ish.

      • kimmeister

I just wish it weren’t a super heavy, platform wedge.

    • decormaven

Suitable outfits for all, even if the footwear is somewhat questionable. That shade of blue just sings on Sophie; that’s the prettiest she has looked at one of these events.

    • MannahattaMamma

HAIR! Joanne Froggett’s hair makes me weep. Plus she seems to have studied at the SJP School of Eyeliner. Looks like she’s peering out from behind black slits in her face.

    • BLauD

Fairly tired of seeing all these grown ladies baring their midriffs on the RC. It’s a look that always strikes me as junior.

    • Bower Bird

Joann Frogatt’s heels look SO BIG in that first photo.

    • Shawn EH

Lesley Nicol is trouncing the young ladies in these! I don’t know about the ironed hair on Joanne.

    • Coco Cornejo

Oh my goodness. I didn’t recognize Prince Albert. I thought he was the butler at the posh house they were visiting.

      • kimmeister

    • formerlyAnon

In the first photo, is Ms. McShera showing us a bit of midriff or is she showing an undergarment. It looks like the latter to me, if so NO. Overall, I’d say that I’d be fine without seeing either her midriff or Ms. Froggatt’s. Second set of ensembles are, as unanimously noted, much nicer.

      • kimmeister

I’m pretty sure that’s her pale midriff.

      • demidaemon

I agree with kim. It’s midriff, and I do not approve.

    • demidaemon

That’s a lot of midriff in the first shot. I’m pretty sure I do not approve it.

    • Boop

This reminds me of Graham Norton. He once said that everytime he sees the actors who play the servants on Downton dressed up on the red carpet he always goes…’Awwwww….”
