“Orange Is The New Black” Season 2 Premiere Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on May 16, 2014

Hit it, ladies!

Interesting. Kind of dark and weird. We respect that. But we’d have liked about a foot of fabric hacked off those sleeves and that hem. Also, the match, over-sized Olive Oyl shoes bug.

Laverne Cox in Viktor Luna

Laverne is wearing a design from Project Runway finalist Viktor Luna. Attagirl and attaboy. This is one of the best looks we’ve seen her in. She tends toward looks that veer too far into drag – skin tight and sequined, for instance; with fishnets – but we hope she’s learning that she can dress for the red carpet in more interesting garments, with eye-catching detailing. We’ve also felt she’d benefit from a little edge or hardness in her looks, but we can understand why a transgender woman might want to avoid that aesthetic. This gives her that slight edginess. The makeup’s looking pretty fierce too.

Taryn Manning in Nicolas Jebran

OOOh, girl. That is not your hair; not your makeup; not your dress. It’s all wrong, dear.

Dascha Polanco

The dress looks great on her, but it’s totally bridal. And that lip color is crazy-wrong.

Samira Wiley in Novis
Orange-Is-The-New-Black-Season-2-Red-Carpet-Rundown-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (5)

She’s adorable, but nothing looks like it goes with anything else here.

Diane Guerrero

A little on the “Vegas party girl” side of the aisle.

Natasha Lyonne in Marc Jacobs

Honey, we don’t care whose name is on the label, this schmatta is doing you no favors.

Laura Prepon in Gustavo Cadile

She looks more and more like the hostess of a late night Chiller Theater-style show every time we see her.

Were these people all going to the same event? The looks vary pretty wildly and I must say, some unfortunate decisions were made.

    • Sarah

Hell yes they were (neon pink lipstick)

  • Who knew Taylor Schilling was capable of not being the biggest sartorial mess in the room?

    • gabbilevy

I mean, she’s never truly nailed it, but this is something. I actually through for a second she was Katy Perry, who, come to think of it, could probably rock that look (but with, like, orange hair).

  • Danielle

Laverne is SHUTTING IT DOWN. Come on, June 6th!!!

    • Clash D

And her makeup is way better than some of the other ladies too. Dascha, I’m looking at you gurl.

      • Danielle

Dascha seems to have a lot of misses in the makeup department, I mutter to myself as I creep her Instagram.

  • Sarah

I like Taylor’s, but I have to give it to Laverne and Viktor. Best match of Not Hiddy Dress (or Makeup) with Right Lady.

    • DuBey2

Yay to Viktor and his fan. Great job.

  • JimMcC

Natasha Lyonne’s dress is deeply unfortunate, but her pose could not make me happier. There’s a kind of “Look! I’m a grown-up!” thing happening that is deeply adorable.

Samira is managing to pull off an outfit that doesn’t reallllllly work. Laverne is best dressed for sure. And I am so, so close to loving what Taylor is in but agree that it needs different lengths. Her hair is killer, though.

    • homofascist

Natasha Lyonne’s behind the scenes interview that is on Netflix right now about her reflections on Season 1 is amazing. She talks about doing a lot of ‘research’ for her role because she is such a professional. It is hilarious.

I also liked Samira’s look too. She is just so cute it somehow works…

      • Imma Mäder

I so agree about Samiras look- it probably wouldn’t work on anyone else

    • cocohall

I agree, Natasha’s pose is just so cute. I actually think Natasha looks attractive in her prison garb – she seems completely comfortable in her orange jammies, so anything remotely “dressy” is bound to look odd on her.

Love that Laverne Cox is wearing Mr. Luna. That little Pixie needed some celebrity love – he always seemed so desperately in need of approval for someone so talented.

Can’t wait for this show to start!

    • I love her attitude, so Natasha is getting away with it for me, but I am a bit surprised Eva Green didn’t snaffle that dress. 2 layers of sheer sleevery seems like a Green play.

  • @Biting Panda

Ladies, I’m gonna be real here. With the exception of Ms. Cox, y’all are lookin a little rough.

    • FibonacciSequins

Second that. I would have filled in those little cutouts above the boobs on Laverne’s dress, but I quibble. I guess Netflix doesn’t budget for stylists, or pay these women enough so they can hire their own?

      • Oh, trust. They get paid plenty.

        • melisaurus

Most of them are fresh or D-listers they probably never had stylists before.

    • MilaXX

      A little?

      • @Biting Panda

        I was being (uncharacteristically) gentle.

  • crash1212

Top two pics are the top two looks at this shindig. Take the sleeves totally off Taylor’s skull extravaganza – bare those shoulders, but leave the mock-turtle-neck thing and that would be a stunning dress. As it is, it’s interesting, but could do better.

    • amanda siegelson

i completely agree – it was what i was thinking as well… just remove those hideous sleeves and you may have something really great there. of course, i’m whole-heartedly in the taylor schilling camp and have been since ‘mercy’, so i’m not to be totally trusted.

  • gayle

Taylor looks good but I agree the skirt could be shortened a bit. Lavern looks great, one little nitpick is that weird strap on her shoulder. Also I would like to see her do something different with her hair for once.

  • BrooklynBomber

One size fits all comment: what the hell?

  • MilaXX

Nope with the exception of Laverne’s look I hate what everyone else is wearing. The entire cast needs a fashion intervention.

    • I mean, to be fair, they do spend the entire show in prison jumpsuits. This has, obviously, lead to less-than-wise sartorial choices when the show wraps.

      • MilaXX

The cast of the Walking Dead spend the entire show in dirty clothes and walker guts. They manage to clean up for the RC. (not counting Norman Reedus’s hair). what they do on set really isn’t an excuse for poor RC choices.

        • Sorry, that should have had a /sarcasm attached to my comment. 🙂

          • MilaXX

no, it’s my fault. apparently I forgot to take my sarcasm pills. 😉

  • Miss wks

    Pennsatucky still on the crack?

    • ShaoLinKitten

She looks BETTER as Pennsatucky in the orange jumpsuit than she does here.

      • carnush

  • majorbedhead

I seriously had no idea that Laverne Cox was transgendered. I guess I DO live under a rock. She looks great.

Laura Prepon looks like she’s auditioning to be the next Elvira.

    • demidaemon

      That’s why I love it.

  • JauntyJohn

I’m actually becoming mildly obsessed with Laura Prepon’s RC adventures now. Her style and evolution are so… just… NOT where I would ever in a million years have guessed she would go.

She looks like the secret love child of Ava Gardner and Morticia Adams.

    • jw_ny

…while I agree with you and am intrigued, I add that I don’t think she should be going in this direction (“evolution” 😉 ). I think she looks kinda great in the pic above, but man…that is not “Donna” nor the person that I thought Laura Prepon was/is. It just doesn’t seem to fit her personality.

  • marlie

Laverne Cox wins this round. Otherwise, Taryn – that MAKEUP. And Natasha – that DRESS. You two go home and think about what you’ve done.

    • smayper

I heard that comment in Betty Draper’s voice. Thank you.

      • marlie

        Haha. You’re welcome. 🙂

  • EEKstl

Can I just say how much I love that you used the word “schmatta?” Laverne Cox looks fierce.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Pennsatucky, what the ever lovin hell is happening here?…you look better on the show, rotten teeth and all!

  • kimmeister

I liked Taylor’s dress better when I thought it was covered with Death Stars and Darth Vader heads.

Taryn looks like Christina Ricci . . . in about 25 years.

How did Diane manage to show off her thigh gap in voluminous pants?

Laura continues with her Grand Dame delusion.

  • jw_ny

First time I’ve liked a dress that Laverne has worn (here)…well done Viktor!

Something about many of these women’s outfits tells me their characters are not too far removed from themselves…

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I can’t look at Natasha Lyonne without imagining her saying “I’M A HOMOSEXUAL!” and crying and drooling.

  • demidaemon

I am kind of loving Laura Prepon’s look. It’s just so BAM retro fabulous. Loving Laverne’s upgrade here, too, and kudos to Victor as well. Hopefully, for both of them, she becomes a regular client.

  • Imasewsure

That’s not a good RC – and it looks like multiple RCs… no one seems to be at the same event

  • ashtangajunkie

Laverne killed it. Taylor looks pretty cool. Everyone else is wearing some nonsense.

  • Jay

I think Laura Prepon’s dress is very elegant. She’s serving face and body-ody-ody, too.

  • bluefish

Laura Prepon giving us raven-haired Lana Turner circa Imitation of Life! Wow-za. I like Samira W. in the Novis get-up. A little too young maybe but cute. Great skirt and I’ve always loved that style of evening sandal. Everyone else, dreadful.

  • FridaStaire

    Love Laura! Classy Elvira.

  • PeaceBang

Is the lighting or the make-up to blame for the fact that they all look about 100 years old?

  • clatie

LP is on the right track with the silhouette, she just needs to be coloring with different crayons.

  • TwiddlyStun

Clearly a black-and-white affair, but otherwise these outfits hardly look like they would all be going to the same event. I think Laverne Cox played it the best – the makeup, hair, dress, and shoes make a great statement together without being garish at all.

  • Pablo

Taryn Manning is definetely gonna pop up on my nightmares with that hair and make-up. You have a great show ladies, put some effort or hire someone who will.

  • “Vampira will seat you now…”

    • You know, if it were a Late Night Chiller style restaurant. Think about it.

  • julnyes

Ms. Cox for the win here though Samira Wiley is super adorable as well.

  • Susan Velazquez

Dascha’s dress would have been better in a different color and better placed nipple darts. Her lipstick is all wrong

  • Lilithcat

There is nothing on that runway that is flattering to the wearer. Indeed, there is nothing on that runway that would be flattering to anyone.

  • Melanie

Laverne is SMOKIN’. WERK it, girl.

  • Kate

    More Star Wars designs? Oy.

  • sunflower

So, clearly Netflix doesn’t employ a stylist

  • Laura Prepon looks 50 years old.

  • gitchygitchymama

Why do i think Laura Prepon one day will un-peal that rubber mask and it will be Tom Cruise all along?

  • missinmass

They all look like ex-cons dressed in someone else’s clothes….oh wait.
    Kudos to casting.

  • queeniethebold

i heart Lavern Cox with all my heart and i think she looks terrific. i just love her. Not sure why. Just do.

Pennsatucky be lookin’ bad in that getup.

Samira Wiley is The Ultimate Adorable. Love huh. Don’t even care that she looks kind of hinky. Love. Huh.

And i never ever care what Natasha Lyonne does because once again: major girl crush.

With this show, all my usual standards just seem to go swirling down le toilette. i just don’t know.

  • boweryboy

This is cute, but there’s too many quibbles for me to get into. It’s a bunch of new stars who are getting accustomed to their sudden fame and figuring out the red carpet. I think they’ll shut it down by the time the season three red carpet happens.

  • I think the late-night Chiller theme for Laura Prepon is actually working quite well for her!

  • unbornfawn

Lots of poor fashion choices. Viktor for the win.

  • Megan Kennedy

I actually think Samira looks straight up adorable.

  • JP

If orange is the new black, can Laura Prepon PLEASE go back to being a redhead?

  • trapperkeeper

All I can think of when I see Taylor here is Darth Vader. I actually thought it was a Rodarte dress at first.
The shape of her hair and the shape of the sleeves both mirror Darth Vader’s helmet.

    Nerd rage, activate.

  • Katherine Leay

taylor is the blonde version of katy perry… they are lost sisters

  • Carleenml

Laura needs to chill, ffs.Loosen up already.

  • I think Laverne is listening to you guys because she looks SO much better than the last time you had a post with her. Better make-up, better dress, just better and pretty!

  • Synnae

I love Taylor’s dress. I agree with TLo on the sleeves and shoes comments but still, it is interesting and edgy. I like it. And she styled her make-up and hair to go with it so props for that.
Laverne looks great, she should deffo go a bit more edgy, it works well for her.

I personally love Laura Preppon’s dress – it is right for her body shape- but I agree I don’t think it is necessarily exciting enough for this red carpet. She may want to have a chat with Dita on how to do retro burlesque interestingly.

  • Akemi

I thought Taylor Schilling was Katy Perry on her Asian Appropriation Tour there for a minute.

  • Shawn EH

Love the crystal skulls pattern! Laura Prepon, or Lily Munster?
