Matt, you totally had us…

…until we got to the pants. They’re about as wrong as flashing a peace sign on the red carpet. Wronger even, maybe. Stop doing both of those things; wearing grandpa pants and flashing peace signs.

In other news, your hair looks really cute.

This is better. We suppose we have to accept the knit tie on the red carpet trend, not to mention the tone-on-tone menswear trend. He’s working all the angles here. We think we’d like this more if the suit wasn’t quite so shiny.

And Matt, you really need some red carpet training. You’re flailing all over the place like a 5-year-old on a sugar high. Just stand still and give them steel. It’ll all be over soon.

He’s so flippin adorable. I’m going to miss him next season.

    • thecitysleeps

I love him. I even like the grandpa pants on him. Come at me! They look kind of cute on him. Too bad the movie (Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut) got completely slayed by critics. Sad face.

      • lunchcoma

It’s depressing that something that involves so many of my favorite people is apparently not worth watching.

    • Karen Belgrad

First pic: No undershirt. Messiest shirt-tuck ever. Slippers.

      I has a sad.

      • CPK1

        Don’t forget peace signs!

        • demidaemon

And grandpa pants! Oh the tragic grandpa pants! Even my grandpa doesn’t wear pants like these!

      • http://birdybegins.blogspot.co.uk/ Eleanorjane

No undershirt and a couple of buttons undone, I want to kiss his collarbones! So lovely, he is.

(But the dark trousers and especially those shoes are just no right)

    • hyperionic

Is his vest buttoned to his pants?

      • Alyssa

It sure looks that way…perhaps it keeps it from riding up?

      • kimmeister

Ha, that’s the most random button and buttonhole placement ever!

      • FibonacciSequins

What the…? Who puts a button on the fly of a pair of pants? Especially if it pulls the vest askew? I have a confusion.

        • kimmeister

I don’t think it’s buttoned to his pants, you can see a corresponding (nonsensical) buttonhole on the other side of the vest.

    • karinlee

Given all the stories about what a klutz he was on the set of Doctor Who, I suppose we may be glad that he didn’t trip over a velvet rope or crash into a photographer or something.

      • FibonacciSequins

Flailing around is kind of his signature move.

        • gabbilevy

Exactly. And I KNOW Tom (nerd that he is) knows that. Matt minus the flail wouldn’t be Matt at all.

      • WendyD

Exactly. He’s an awkward giraffe and I love him.

    • kimmeister

Well, his knit tie sort of ties into his woven shoes, I guess. That 2nd shot in the blue suit though; that’s a Blue Steel look if I ever saw one from him.

    • SewingSiren

Is he wearing women’s pants in the top shot? Women’s pant’s from the 1980′s? That are too short and too big in the waist? With a double breasted plaid jacket hanging open?

      • ryenerman

        THIS!

    • Mothra

That checked jacket is too big. But i like the bare feet and shoes. If the jacket fit it would be pretty fetch.

    • hughman

      Dad?

      • CPK1

        best laugh of the day

    • lunchcoma

Hey, Matt, I think you’re wearing some of my father’s clothes in that first picture. Please send him his bedroom slippers back! He gets terribly cranky without them. You can keep the pants, though, my mother has been trying to get him to try something new for years.

      • snarkykitten

        He stole my dad’s loafers.

    • Elizabeth Szubert

Is it horrible that the only thing I took away from this is “his hair is back!!!”? *facepalm* And yes, the clothes look okay.

    • GenieinTX

I could look at these pictures all day. Sigh. This is the best he has looked since taking off the Doctor’s purple coat.

    • FibonacciSequins

That first look is a scrolldown fug if I ever saw one.

Shame about the brown shoes with the blue suit – those two shades just don’t go together. I agree that Matt’s hair is very nice.

    • KT

Agree that the first look is a bit of a scrolldown fug, but I’m really into the second look. The shoes are a little weird, but I kind of love them. Yeah, I’d hit it.

    • Wink

Totally adorkable, but the “woven” shoes with the blue suit must go.

      • decormaven

My heart sunk a little when I saw those shoes.

    • MilaXX

That first look desperately needs a pair of slim cut navy dockers. Second look is okay solely because it’s Matt. I would hate this look on anyone else.

    • Janet B

      Adorable grown up child.

    • Imasewsure

I love this guy’s style so he gets an automatic pass from me no matter what… and that jacket is awesome

    • mjude

TLO says “You’re flailing all over the place like a 5-year-old on a sugar high.” LMFAO!!!

    • GeoDiva

Knit ties just need to go away, pronto!

      • vitaminC

Noooo! They’re great, just not for a formal event.

    • WendyD

He’s on my short list of beautiful Brits who can do no wrong. The peace sign is his thing, he’s been doing it forever. The blue suit is so pretty. He’s so pretty. His hair is growing back. OH GOD I LOVE HIM.
Have I mentioned that I’ve met him and he’s even more gorgeous in person?

      • Vtg Fashion Library

OMG I would LOVE to see him in person. He is just so adorable.

    • snarkykitten

He IS like a 5-year old on a sugar high tho.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Dear T&Lo, You don’t HAVE to get over knit ties on the red carpet. There are things I’ve been fuming about for years (bare legs with formal or office wear for instance). I find the constancy of my dislike for some fashion trends sort of comforting.

    • Cheryl

Please, please, please wear socks. Bare feet in shoes are gross. Bare feet in borrowed shoes, super gross.

    • Violina23

Somebody get this man some fish sticks and custard STAT!

(Or will that just rile him up more…)

    • JMWilder

For the curious kittens, the other guy in the second set of photos is Reda Kateb, a French actor. I squealed when I saw him because I thought he was great in A Prophet. He was also in Zero Dark Thirty, but I never saw that so I can’t comment on that.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Adorable in that three-piece suit-I can live with that.

    • the_valkyrie

I have many existential questions. Why does it always rain on me? I don’t know. Will I ever finish this thesis? I don’t know. Why do knit ties exist? I don’t know.

    • AthenaJ

I love that he is wearing a TARDIS blue suit :)

    • marlie

First look: he borrowed grandpa’s jacket. Second look: no complaints… He looks great!

    • quiltrx

Very dashing in the blue suit! I dig the “there’s no way to possibly button that” button at the bottom of the vest.
In that first suit pic, I’m getting a Michael York vibe…sophisticated!

    • cocohall

He’s adorable. Of course all of it is wrong, clothes-wise. He has a great physique for clothes, but I suspect that if he turned up looking like a male model, it would actually look comical on him. He is meant to be a bit of shaggy stray dog, dripping water on your floor and leaving hair on the sofa. In that sense, he looks perfect here.

    • JP

I don’t mind the pants so much in the first set as the shoes. If he had socks and a different shoe it would have changed the whole look.

Matt has peace signs; Benedict Cumberbatch has finger guns. Brits and their “what do I do with my hands on the red carpet” thing.

    • Mr. J.

“Beautiful….adorable.” Me no get. AT ALL.

    • LadyVimes

Ah, see, he *is* a 5-year-old on a sugar high. Flailing comes with the man, at least from what I’ve seen.

I just want to rumple his hair. Can I rumple his hair? Please?

    • Vtg Fashion Library

He just makes me happy. Criticizing him is like killing a puppy. He is just too adorable to complain about.

    • MartyBellerMask

Matt, dear, do you not remember Bugle Boy pants? No? Oh, right, you are probably too young. Just trust us on this, pleats are the devil.

    • formerlyAnon

Oh you guys. Two outfits on a cute boy! It’s like the breakfast you get the prize out of the cereal box and it’s actually a good one.

(No, I’m not a huge fan, but . . . cute boy. Dull morning.)

I’m feeling so beneficent that I’d forgive the trousers and the peace sign if he’d only worn socks that cover his ankles. But I accept that the bare ankles are probably totally acceptable for the venue. For those without my prejudices.
