Jennifer Lawrence in Jason Wu at the “X-Men: Days Of Future Past” New York Premiere

Posted on May 12, 2014

In keeping with the theme of this film, Jennifer apparently traveled through time from the distant year 1996, judging by her outfit:

She’d need darker lip color and thinner brows to complete the picture, but everything else, from the spaghetti straps to the blunt hair to the strappy shoes, is straight out of the Winona Ryder post-Reality Bites playbook. It’s … just okay. The dress looks heavy and we don’t like the color. The shoes look a little on the cheap side. And we’re not loving the hair. Overall, it’s not awful, but we wouldn’t have recommended any of these styling choices ourselves.

Kittens, we’re just not ready for the ’90s to come back in such a literal way. We may need to lie down for a bit in order to process this.

  • @Biting Panda

I love the dress. It is very Mystique. But yes, hair and shoes could be improved upon.

  • Sarah

I like her earring. Her dress looks like a camisole that is molting into a fancy werewolf.

    • Carleenml

“I like her earring” sounds much more 80s. (burn those photos, please)

  • gorghast

The dress is insanely unstylish but it oddly suits her far more than what Dior makes her wear. She looks comfortable.

    • tallgirl1204

I thought the same thing– except I don’t mind that it’s unstylish. Perhaps because I am of a certain vintage, I think it looks classic. I would have said late 20’s early 1930’s. Can’t you see a screen vixen of that era dressed like this? Maybe I am wrong and someone will (gently) tell me why, but dang it, I like the look, I like her, and I like them together.

      • Imasewsure

Yes but those dresses would have been made of an exquisite silk fabric and would have been draped perfectly.

I don’t hate the style at all but the material just looks so cheap (and too short?). Looks like a pretty maxi dress not a gown

        • demidaemon

That’s my major problem—the fabrication. In an exquisite fabric, the design of this dress would be fine, even beautiful maybe. But this fabric just makes it ugly.

      • Carleenml

I think the shoes really drag it down. And definitely getting a Renee Zellweger 90’s red carpet vibe.

  • Mailbtch

also missing: iconic black wire choker. so many painful memories

  • Lolo Andre

I’m sorry but this look is cheap from head to toe, Gurl you’re given off-Dior chance and this what you do? Also, so over “look at me, I’m so quirky and crazyyy”

  • marlie

I think JLaw’s hair and makeup look great, but I’m not ready (nor will I ever be) for a dress from my high school- and college- formal days to make a return to the red carpet.

    • Sarah

When (and hopefully if) the babydoll makes an appearance on the RC, I will officially Freak Out.

      • marlie

Oh GAWD. That trend needs to stay dead.

        • DTLAFamilies

Based on what I see in my neighborhood, I think the babydoll isn’t coming back. But velvet, plaid, boots with dresses, crop tops and Vamp lipstick: Yep. Get ready.

          • Sarah

Nooooo. I refuse to engage the floral snap-crotch jumpsuit as a viable item ever again.

          • Anna

Forever 21’s been selling my old wardrobe from middle and high school for the past couple of years now.

          • demidaemon

That must be traumatizing. I know I get immediate PTSD if I see anything remotely like my uniform from middle school.

          • Anna

It used to horrify me, since the current target audience were at best toddlers but most likely not even born yet when I dressed that way. Now it’s sort of amusing in a “What the hell were we thinking?!” sort of way.

          • demidaemon

            You are stronger than me.

      • lunchcoma

Don’t scare me like that! I already have too many pictures of my teenage self in denial about the fact that E cups and baby doll dresses do not go together.

      • Danielle

Along with the Jynco jeans. *shivers*

        • Sarah

Argh! I was a tour kid, and I had a friend whose BF was a JNCO guy, but he also longed to be a skirt-wearin’ hippie dude. He would wear the skirt OVER the JNCOs. We walked about twenty feet behind him at all Grateful Dead and Phish shows when he did that. *SHUDDER*

        • decormaven

By the powers of Zeus, do not bring back JNCO jeans.

    • LearnedFoot

This whole outfit looks almost exactly like what I wore to my boyfriend’s fraternity’s spring formal in 1997. Two differences: my hair was better (yay!), and I accessorized with a velvet choker (boo!)

  • TrixieConQueso

Gurl is serving up some FACE. Dat skin! Sigh. As Annie Lennox sang – “Keep Young and Beautiful If You Want To Be Loved,”

  • NMMagpie

The shoes… MEH. That fourth shot? Everything.

    • kimmeister

I’m rather liking the 2nd-to-last shot. Although I was expecting her hand to be up flashing a rocker sign.

      • NMMagpie

    • ktr33

      “meh.” my thought exactly.

  • Sara P.

Are we sure that this isn’t an old picture of Renee Zellweger doing press for Empire Records?

    • 25or6to4

I know, right? I keep waiting for Liv Tyler to magically appear in the background.

    • MartyBellerMask

Swap the growl (?) for a pout, and you’re spot on!

  • hughman

That hair is like lesbian comic at the Laugh Factory circa 1995. Ammirite ladies?

  • Anna

Laney Boggs goes to the X-Men premiere! Please tell me there was a choreographed Rockafella Skank dance number at the afterparty.

  • Danielle

    Shades of Renee Z.

  • NBG

This dress is so damn 90s, it’s playing a Cranberries CD.

(And yes, that is the hairstyle we all had in our yearbook photos in ’94. Except we were wearing the stupid chokers.)

    • Danielle

It’s also needing to go check the Quad before someone snags it.

      • julnyes

Just rewatched Clueless and it is a comedy that stands the test of time. I still find it hilarious.

    • Alicia

Given that Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan all have new albums out, surely Garbage & The Cranberries can’t be far behind?

      • kimmeister

The Cranberries had one out a few months ago, I think! I heard one song from it once on the radio, and it vanished forevermore.

      • demidaemon

I think Garbage released a new album about a year to a year and a half ago.

  • JP

All I can think when I look at this is thank goodness she’s young enough that she can wear a dress that can’t support a proper bra. I miss those days.

    • susan6

Yeah, my first thought was “how do you wrangle the boobs with a dress like that?” I guess if you’re young enough (or small enough which is not the case here) they wrangle themselves?

      • JP

Ah, the elasticity of youth. I was a D cup when I got married and couldn’t wear a bra with my wedding dress and everything was fine. Now I practically need a bra to wear freakin’ pajamas.

  • MinAgain

I like her make-up and her hair. I’m so-so on the dress. Hate the shoes.

  • Synnae

She is not wearing Dior, that alone is a positive.

As for the 90s coming back- it happens and I plan to ignore 99% of it. I do remember the late 90’s having a lot of flares and pallazo pants though, and I am totally ready for those to come back into the high street. I haven’t been able to find dress pants since the skinny came back in.

    • tallgirl1204

please, please, let pallazo pants be back in. So easy to wear, and so generally forgiving.

      • Synnae

And they look great on tall girls. Fashion hasn’t really been on our side pant wise for a while now.

      • Jackie4g

They are out there but it’s probably forbidden to tell you where. Matte jersey wide legged pants in a decent inseam? Bob Mackie does a line for very famous tv shopping channel that includes pants like that. But they have elastic waists so that might make them fashion suicide. They are very drapey and wash really well, BTW.

  • Bert Keeter

If I was starting to sketch or even drape this dress….about 19 seconds in I’d say to myself “Does fashion really need another beyond basic, has been done a zillion times before, i.e. Donna Karan, bias slip dress?” I’d definetly say NO!

    • Jackie4g

Yes, because you have beautiful taste.

      • Bert Keeter

  • Jecca2244

i hate to say it but it might be time to split from Rachel Zoe.

  • Jessica Freeman

I loathe the hair. It really looks like its the only piece she has.

  • International Model

Thank you, J.Law, for finally making all these crushed velvet dresses I’ve been hoarding before selling valuable.

  • Katie Bacon Turner

Kelly Taylor season 5 90210 realness

  • mjude

bitter kittens, i cant for the life of me remember the trend in 90’s fashion. i am not sure what i think about jennifers look

    • Sarah

      Best left forgotten, really.

    • Carleenml

me, either. which is sad because I think I was probably cute in the 90s. Hard to remember, though. No. Wait. I was cuter in the 2000s. Carry on.

      • Ginger

The first half of the 90’s I was tragic (think Rocky Mountain jeans, big hair and ropers) and the second half of the 90’s I was a young mama with literally NO sense of style. The 2000s were much better to me. :)

    • tallgirl1204

Me either. I was out in the woods being a ranger.

      • demidaemon

You probably dressed better than 99% of the population.

    • Constant Reader

I fell out of love with fashion in the 90s and it took me years to love it again. There was something about seeing grown women with heavily made up faces wearing cropped tees and overalls that made me die a little inside. Plus, having been a magpie for as long as I can remember, jewelry being out of style except tiny little stud earrings and those ubiquitous Y necklaces was just depressing.

Looking back, it’s like the entire nation was badly hung over from the excesses of the 80s and just stopped giving a shit.

  • 25or6to4

Add a choker and clunky heels and it’s 1994 all over again.

  • Latin Buddy

It isn’t fair. I see Karly Kloss and just can’t say that J Law looks better.

  • Sarah

But did she trip? I’m over her style but I’m all about Klutzgate.

    • susan6

YES, she did. Huffpost has the video. She is adorable.

  • Audrey Lee

Funny, my first thought was Winona Ryder, too. Cripes. Not my favorite JLaw look.

  • juniper

I don’t like this look but I like Jennifer’s public persona. I’m only here now to lodge a formal complaint against her hairstylist. Stop mourning her long locks and get it together please. There are cute styles for that cut. Now earn your contract and have some fun please.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the hair but I’m not liking this dress at all. The phrase “mall clothes” comes to mind.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

i do declare miss sharon stone, you’re looking younger every year!

    • Alloy Jane

She’s definitely giving of Sharon Stone here. Now I wonder if, in addition to falling all over the place, she’ll be flashing her lack of panties in her next movie.

  • BlairBear

at least she didnt wear one of those stretchy chokers. And yes J Law the world does need a clueless reboot

  • crash1212

I can run with all of this – well I don’t hate any of it – until I get to the shoes. And then, I’m done. Not only are they ugly, but that style totally does not go with that dress. Now I’m so agitated about the shoes that I’ve focused on the hair…WTF? Nope. Love the ring though.

  • Alicia

Maybe a bit too on-point for Mystique?

  • Rhonda Shore

    Her hair is utterly hideous.

  • DinnerIsServed1972

She’s one daisy-barrette away from becoming I-Just-Flashed-My-Boobs-At-David-Letterman Drew Barrymore

  • Mary Featherstone

So is she not required to wear Dior anymore?

  • Amel

First thing I thought when I saw this dress: Buffy circa season 2. But damn does JLaw look great as the vampire slayer

  • Alyssa

    Is her earring a spider?

  • CLoverleaf

A rare chance to not wear Dior, and this is what she comes up with? Sigh.

  • deelup

    Juliette Lewis realness.

  • Glammie

Oh cool, time to dig out my old Donna Karan velvet slip dress. After a six-week work-out.

  • Victoria Anzalone

Love it. My mom had a couple of shiny velvet dresses like this in the ’90s, too and I totally rocked ’em at weddings last year.

  • amanda lynn

    Bringing the Zellweger.

  • Patrick Cleary

I think the fabric choice is to match Mystique’s skin.

    • Sly

That was my thought. And The color as well. I love it all.

  • acevedob

Wow I just saw that J Law is 4 years younger than me. She was 10 when the 90s ended, so to her it certainly is “vintage”. LMAO. Sorry guys.

  • Fred Vaughn

The hair and makeup look on point. The shoes aren’t doing her any favors, and the dress wouldn’t seem quite so wrong if the hemline was significantly shorter.

  • ashtangajunkie

I almost never like her makeup, but it’s pretty here.

  • E.Nelson

In the over the shoulder shot I literally did a double-take to see if it was her or a monstrous Renee Z-Jennifer Tilly hybrid. I’m still dubious.

  • clatie

I had that dress. I bought it at Uncle Jer’s in Silverlake for like $89.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m OK with the dress, but frankly, after Ms. BingBing’s appearance, no one else really registers.

  • Andrea Lentz

I love this better than a lot of the Dior i’ve seen her in.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

It looks like it’s made out of carpet from a shaggin’ wagon.

    • decormaven

“She’s gonna love me in my Chevy van. And that’s all right with me.”

  • Whitney Barkley

As a child – early teen of the 90s, I AM SO READY. I saw a girl in a baby doll dress, platform Mary Janes, and dangly earrings just the other day. I almost died. I wore that exact outfit (ordered from Delias, natch) to seventh grade almost everyday.

    • BLauD

      Soul sister.

  • Denise Rambo

That dress looks SO much better on her than the model!

  • Janice Bartels

What type of fabric is that?

    • cowper

      I think it’s crushed velvet.

  • Gatto Nero

    I’d wear the ring.

  • suzq

    Is that….crushed velvet? Yikes.

    • Alicia

      Devore velvet, I think!

    • wisdomy

I was about to ask exactly that. I am appalled. APPALLED, I say.

  • demidaemon

At least it’s not Dior. On the other hand, it is still a kind of ugly dress. That fabric is super cheap looking.

  • GeoDiva

I’m just glad it’s not one of those awful Dior’s.

  • Judih1

I like her hair and her attitude. Not much else. Looks like opinions on this look are very divided.

  • Drunken Housewife

Didn’t like the bias-cut slip dresses back in the day and don’t like it now.

  • ShaoLinKitten

The dress is just OK, but she is werqing the hell out of it. I have an irrational love for her, so I’d give this a thumbs up. So much better than the Dior atrocities.

  • shopgirl716

The 90’s. All is remember is a lot of black and grey, boring. Oh yeah, and the belly shirts, yuck

  • KC

OMG I could not place what it was about this dress. Now it all makes sense! She looks exactly like she could be a starlet in the 90s!

  • Truthiness2U

I liked the 90s in fashion…belly shirts aside. I like it a lot more than now, frankly. So very tired of skinny jeans, and all this lace, and unbacked no less, crap.

That being said, I don’t like this dress. It looks like something from a CW show in the 90s, and while that might have been fine for Prue on Charmed, it really isn’t RC caliber.

  • unbornfawn

I think the dress works for her. Not crazy about the hair.

  • CommentsByKatie

Ugh. No. I like structure in my dresses, maybe that’s the more modern approach. This just looks old and gross. Hate the hair, too.

I think I like this look a lot; plus, good eyebrows. And yes, like Tallgirl1204 says, she looks 1920s-30s. Love it.

  • LadyVimes

Hate the hair, hate the dress, hate the lip. Go home, Jen.

….oh god. Is she the new Jen? The 90s are back with a vengeance.

  • cocohall

On the fashion side, the dress is a bit of a fail, but if you are going for “do me,” I’m sure this dress would net her many many offers. Her body looks fantastic. And let’s face it – its a comic book movie and why not give the fanboys something to dream about. Besides our Fan Bing Bing is owning the fashion moment for the evening.

  • Fiona Kotur

Proud Jennifer Lawrence carried our KOTUR Clutch!

  • French_Swede

I like it. The color of the dress makes her eyes pop, it fits extremely well, and looks like it would be comfortable. I also like the back.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

The 90’s called and they want their SHITTASTIC dress back.

  • Gaby

That … fanning waves? … pattern never reads as anything but upholstery to me, especially in that fabric. She’s like the drag queen who repurposed a shitty couch.

    • Fuchsiaforever

Yes! Saw SO much of that patter/fabric (especially in purple) in the late ’90s in Atlanta

      • Gaby

If it were in teal and pink I could see it in a Miami art deco motel room.

  • kittentoes

Forever 21 looks like junior year barfed all over it. I’m still buying the leggings though.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I remember when my boobs came in in the late 90’s, my mother bought me this ridiculously expensive red velvet top… she said “It’s timeless, you’ll have it forever”… maybe I’ll find it next visit and go as “90’s girl” for Halloween this year.

  • halo323

Hilarious. This is a close facsimile of my actual prom dress, actually in 1996. Well done, TLo.

  • eruannalle

i see what everyone’s saying but honestly, i am LOVING the 90s drag. i’m so unashamedly into the 90s revival thing. bring it on.

  • housefulofboys

    A. It’s better than Dior. B. She looks like she has a spider attached to her earlobe. That’s all I got.

  • EEKstl

Did you ever sit in a movie theatre back in the 90’s watching a film set in the present day and think “THIS is the era that no future fashion designer will reference, because there’s nothing here to reference?” Well, shut the front door: Here it is.

  • BluesD

The shape of the dress isn’t bad, but the fabric looks like someone took a tattered old couch and made it into a dress.

  • Bradio311

    She just needs a choker.

  • DeTrop

Well I like her hair. She is so beautiful and fresh looking. Do not like the color and fabric of the dress but isn’t this dress 1920’s Garbo/Lombard? Why do these ladies stand so awkwardly?

  • ThaliaMenninger

She needs to find a Mae West biopic.

  • Esz

But its not Dior and thus its good in my eyes

  • bluefish

    No. Sleazy, sorry.

  • icm

giving weird face in the second last shot

and what’s wrong with a little Winona Ryder realness, I ask? A month late, but still worth
