Pairs Division: Geoffrey Arend and Christina Hendricks at the “Hedwig And The Angry Inch” Opening Night

Posted on April 23, 2014

We’re sometimes amazed at how quickly she bounces back and forth between right and oh-so-wrong on the style front. That thing she wore on Fallon was pretty awful and unflattering. But this? We’re liking, if not loving it.

It’s not perfect. Things rarely are with her. The jacket’s too tight and all her blacks are not quite matching. It’s definitely a case of us liking the idea of an outfit more than the actuality of it. But Christina in a tuxedo jacket sounds like a winner to us. And her hair and makeup are really pretty. And please don’t hate us for this, but we dig the shoes for being funky and different. She’s had more than her share of shoe issues on the red carpet and we think these suit her pretty well.

We are so gonna get yelled at for those shoes. We can feel it.

He… could use some help on the style front, they said kindly.

I actually think the shoes are flattering to her feet (if not to themselves). Her makeup has been fabulous lately!

    • SugarSnap108

Her face has definitely been extra-gorgeous of late.

    • jen_vasm

I totally cosign. I dig those shoes, but I have to concentrate so hard not to be distracted by that mustache.

      • d4divine

Yes…didn’t know Christina was married to Dastardly Dan. Lol

    • MartyBellerMask

And flattering to her legs. Her teeny strappy kitten heels do not flatter her feet or calves at all. These booties are a welcome change!

    • Not applicable

I don’t love booties in general- but she seems to have like major bunions and always looks like she’s in severe pain in those skinny, pointy toed shoes. So- from that side of things these are flattering- and who knows maybe more comfortable?? (doubtful, they are still pretty high)

and yes- she has looked SO beautiful lately- her skin!! amazing!

  • crash1212

I like the idea of this outfit, but the shoes are the only part I really like. They are masterfully cut to defeat the cankles that usually come with this type of shoe.

  • @Biting Panda

I’m not a fan of the shoes, in general, but I’m happy to see them on her. Overall, this is really working for her.

    • Qitkat

I may be one of the few who has always been creeped out by that film, and after googling the phrase just now, I know why. And I wish I didn’t.
Look at your own risk, if you don’t know also.

      • cocohall

I can’t say you didn’t warn me, but I feel unwell now. Google is not always your friend.

      • @Biting Panda

LoL, I missed it. I was at the boy’s baseball practice. I very well may die of curiosity. But I love you anyway.

    • KinoEye

The fact that they’re married leads me to believe he’s got SOMETHING going on for him. Christina’s said in interviews that she was the one who got his number and came on super strong in the beginning. Dude must be doing something very, very right.

      • aly

Yeah, it seems like he is nice and funny and cooking and singing in their house all the time, which is pretty much the best thing that you could ever get. TBH I think he is pretty great and I would just really love to sleep over at their house and hang out with them on a Sunday morning.

        • KinoEye

Agreed. He sounds like my dream guy, too — but it’s funny how the shut-ins of the internet say all kinds of horrible things about him, I guess because they’re jealous? Meh. Looks aren’t everything, and I can definitely see a lady like Christina falling head over heels for a man like him. Kind of like Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

          • aly

Oh, yeah, they’re always in those terrible click-bait “CELEBRITIES WITH UGLY SPOUSES” slideshows.

Certainly it’s insulting to him, but I also think it’s demeaning to Christina – like, “You’re hot! You have to marry a hot person! That’s all there is to you! YOU ARE SEX YOU MUST ACT ACCORDINGLY”

          • marlie

And, he’s actually rather good looking. Check out some of his publicity photos on the interwebs… with a haircut and no crazy facial hair, he’s really handsome.

          • Clash D

            it’s the mustache.

          • Heather

I agree – I think he’s handsome in an unusual way, and also comes across as smart and lovely, and those are all big things in my book. She’s beautiful but not in a conventional sense either (ie, she’s a classic beauty, not a Victoria’s Secret model). I think they make an adorable couple.

    • Black Doug

I know it’s not healthy to be jealous, but damn if Geoffrey Arend isn’t the greatest role model for “nerdy guy landing hot woman” since Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.

      • Paigealicious

Or Jordan Bratman landing Christina Aguilera…although I guess that didn’t really work out.

  • BluesD

I rather like the shoes. I think the v-cut helps keep her legs from looking stumpy.

  • lundibleu

I would like the shoes better if they didn’t look like they were maiming her feet. I don’t think they actually are, but the style/shape looks like they are. She looks good, but the idea is better than execution. I think it needed a different coloured top and a slightly looser cut jacket.

  • alyce1213

I love the shoes! My favorite part. The rest is standard, okay, but the rolled-up sleeves bug. He looks like a cheeky little boy with a pencilled-in mustache. I hope he’s the most wonderful person to her, because I don’t get any physical appeal.

    • KinoEye

She seems to be very, very happy with him — I think of it as a more benign version of when Marilyn was married to Arthur Miller. The looks weren’t the primary attraction there, either, but she adored him for the time their relationship lasted.

      • alyce1213

I realize it seems judgey about his looks, which are really okay — he’s quirky, but nice looking. It’s just a feeling of a mismatch, or an odd match — maybe like Miller and Monroe (‘though who really knows what went on with that). As I said, I hope he’s really good to her and keeps her laughing and happy. 🙂

  • snarkmeister

Do not like the little mini-stankboots. If you aren’t wearing pants, you shouldn’t be wearing booties. Booties need socks.

    • alyce1213

Those are high enough to conceal thin, short socks. I don’t know if she did, but they are.

    • MilaXX

I go barefoot all the time and don’t have problems with stank foot. That said she looking at the cut of the shoe she could be wearing footies in those.

      • Donna Tabor

My feet rarely sweat, also. I wish that “stank” comment would die an unnatural death. It’s disturbing.

        • marlie

It’s shouldn’t be about sock/sockless, but rather, heat and humidity. It should just apply when we see the ladystars at events in California in the height of the summer, wearing boots. Sure, they could also be wearing socks, but ANY boots under those circumstances are going to be gross.

          • Donna Tabor

Not necessarily. After all, out West they wear cowboy boots every day of their lives. Not everyone has stinky feet.

          • MilaXX

Agreed. Boots at Cochella I’m sure are stanky. At an event like this, if it’s a good shoe with breathable materials it really shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t like socks so other than in the winter when I wear tights, or a dressy event that requires them I never wear them and I don’t have a problem with it.

          • Lisa_Co

If I don’t wear sandals in summer, I try to always wear low cut peds. They now make them low enough to be basically unseen in your shoes.

    • MasterandServant

nah, I wear booties to work all the time…though always with tights

  • Danielle

I appreciate that she’s not hiding behind her clutch.

  • Lori

I agree that the idea of her outfit is significantly better than the execution, but I have such a soft spot for her that I can’t hate it.

Please say that his mustache if for a role.

    • kimmeister

It cracks me up how his ‘stache and brows are all pointing toward the middle of his face.

      • Cheryl Smith

I loved him on Body of Proof with Dana Delany. I too hope the stash is for a role he is playing. My guess is that is is a lot of fun to be with.

  • clatie

I like the shoes on their own but they are shortening her legs – stumpifying them. I am puzzled by how unflattering so much of her clothing is. She is drop dead gorgeous with a drop dead gorgeous shape. Yet so often she looks only barely okay. I am sure she gets sick of the uncomfortable outfits she wears in her role on MM, but, honey, YOU ALWAYS LOOK FLAWLESS.

  • judybrowni

Hair and makeup: perfect. I’ve never seen her prettier in actual life.

Jacket and skirt okay: I like the shoes in closeup, but from a distance they read as hooves with the silver as claws.

He looks like Salvador Dali in Junior High, and I don’t mean that as a compliment.

    • Sarah

Arshile Gorky was my first thought. Similar moustaches.

    • Miss Ruth

That? Provided me my one and only out-loud laugh of the day. Thank you. I’d pay lots of moneys to see a portrait gallery of Artists in Junior High.

    • HeisenbergHattie

      Paul McCartney eyebrows!

    • makeityourself

Makeup, perfect. Hair? Rather wiggy I’m sorry to say. You can see it plain as day.

      • ampg

Yes, she’s really had a problem with wig placement in her last couple of appearances.

  • Jackie4g

Considering how awful those high cut booties make most people’ calves look, (short and wide), the vee cut has redeemed the shoes completely and made them interesting and wearable. I like them. Someone tell Julianne Moore it is possible to have high cut and flattering shoes, please.

  • Jacob Bowen

I am just So glad that those booties look like that, instead of the awkward banana peel edge that those booties tend to have! I think they’re cute!

I also LOVE the change from crazy eyes in photo 2 to Resting Bitch Face in photo 3.

  • Tanya Wade

Those booties are KILLA, and I think his tie is, too!

    • MartyBellerMask

His tie is making me smile. 🙂

  • lillyvonschtupp

I love the shoes. But what’s going on with him? He’s got this child molester look which is too creepy for me.

  • DagnyReardon

The shoes are actually my favorite part of the ensemble.

  • Judih1

She always dresses so matronly – like decades older than she really is. I am 56 and would not go near some of the choices she makes

    • sagecreek

No kidding! You know, it’s funny, I first met her as YoSaffBridge on Firefly, and her transition from sexy earthgal into matronly has left me completely befuddled.

    • MilaXX

      • SierraDelta

  • Janice Bartels

    Nick and Nora Charles revisited.

  • decormaven

Another vote for the shoes- definitely a step up from previous choices. This woman needs a cosmetics campaign, stat. That skin is flawless.

  • GeoDiva

The shoes are cool, but I personally would only wear them with pants.

  • sagecreek

Well, yeah, I’m gonna yell at you about the shoes, they’re so wrong, but I love you both, so it’s cool.

  • MilaXX

I think she’d look better without the jacket and please tell me I’m not seeing weave tracks. I like the idea of this look better than the execution. Loose the jacket & fix the hair. I like the booties.
He looks as good as it gets for him. The suit appears to fit so I’m okay with it.

    • kimmeister

Oh no, I think you’re right about the weave tracks.

      • Sarah

I thought so, too. Wig edges at least.

        • mommyca

How bad can her hair be? Sometimes her wigs placements are terrible…

          • MilaXX

It’s not always a matter of bad hair. Sometimes wigs are worn to give a fuller look or give a person’s natural hair a break. She colors her hair so I wonder if she dons a wigs when she has a heavy press junket so she’s not frying it by curling and coloring all the time.

  • GorgeousThings

Teens, dollface. Let’s get real for a moment. You earn a LOT of money. LOTS of it, honey. Screw the freebies that designers throw at you. Pony up the bucks and have one of them make you a custom fitted tux that will skim over the girls while nipping back in toward your waist without giving us all those unsightly drag lines. Yes, it will cost a lot. Probably what the average American makes in a couple of months. But you? Honey, all you need to do is one show and you’ve paid for 28 of those. So put a fucking crowbar to your wallet and BUY AN OUTFIT THAT FITS, dammit.

And burn those shoes. They are a crime against humanity.

    • FridaStaire

Yes. You will NEVER get a jacket that fits without extensive custom tailoring! Do it! For us! And please cut your hair or put it up.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I love her makeup-really playing up that porcelain complexion. The tux jacket is a big improvement over the leopard print schmatta.

  • Sophie

I like the shoes! And I really dislike the purse. Her face looks beautiful, but I think shorter hair suits her better.

  • Qitkat

Generally speaking, she looks so lovely here. And I like the shoes, a lot.
But ever since I started looking closely at her wigs, I am distracted by the slightly off-fit of them.

    • Sarah

That close up is giving us an unfortunate view of how askew that wig really is. I want to yank it down past her natural hairline, or fluff her own hair past that edge to hide the faux-ness.

      • Qitkat

We’ll sneak up, one of us on each side 😉
That shade is such the perfect color for her, but I wonder how those wigs look up close and personal if we feel that way just from pictures.

    • mommyca

Since I learned that she wears wigs, that’s all I can see all the time… It’s distracting…

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

A wig! That explains soooooooooo much! Except – why?

  • My feet tend to have this “bread baking in a loaf pan” effect when I wear certain shoes. These look unloafable and for that, I love, no, loaf them.

  • H2

I like the idea of the look, but she needs a jacket that’s tailored to fit her better.

  • Gatto Nero

The jacket’s a little too big in the shoulders and sleeves (which are rolled up) but pulls where it’s buttoned (too high, because of her shape). I love the idea of the tux jacket, but it needs to be fitted to her body precisely. Or made expressly for her.
Love the leather skirt and yes, the shoes too.

  • Lower vamp and/or open sides on those shoes, and I’d be on board. As it is, all I can see is a Bedazzled Hoof, which is flattering to no one’s ankles.

  • somebody blonde

I love the face and shoes. I wish either the dress or the jacket would’ve been in a color, rather than in clashing blacks, and everything she’s wearing could be fitted better. But definitely not terrible for her.

  • somebody blonde

Also, say what you will about her man, but at least his suit fits him correctly.

    • sagecreek

Do people say anything bad about her man? I think he’s probably really lucky.

      • somebody blonde

Well, TLo just said he could use help on the style front, which implies (at least to me) that they think there’s something wrong with his outfit. Maybe they object to his shirt and tie combo? Because as I said, the suit fits perfectly.

  • ladybane

This is such a baffling couple. She is literally a Goddess on Earth (if you favor that type of Goddess: not a lithe, rangy huntress goddess, but a womanly, voluptuous goddess of love and sex and ripe fruits) and he… is so not the type of man you’d expect on her arm.
Dude makes her look happy though, so c’est la vie.

  • jw_ny

I like the shoes…just don’t like them with this outfit, or with a skirt in general. Save them for tights or skinny pants. That jacket looks so awkward and tight, the way it’s pulling draws a lot of attention to her tummy. The skirt, from what I can see, looks too tight as well. She needs to find a new tailor.

  • KT

She looks pretty good, and while I like the shape of the booties and agree this is a big step up for her in that department, I think the embellishments look too craft store-y.

  • LeelaST

Hate the shoes. Neck up she looks lovely although the hair is still a little odd, like it’s growing out of a bad/short cut.

  • Eric Stott

I love the shoes too. The jacket does pull on her, but that’s sort of inevitable – to fit properly on her that jacket would need to be cut differently and specially tailored. It’s a very nice try.

Him: button the jacket, and if you must show the vest get one that comes up slightly higher. Invest in a decent white shirt and a black bow tie & save that shirt and tie for another suit.

    • MilaXX

You don’t think she can afford to have a jacket tailored? No excuse for that.

      • Eric Stott

For a perfect fit I think it would need more than tailoring – possibly a custom pattern.

        • MilaXX

Custom would fit better, but she could buy a jacket that covers the boobs and have the waist taken in and still look better than this. This jacket not only makes her boobs look ginormous, it also gives the impression that she has a gut.

          • Eric Stott

In cases like this (with men as well as women) it is often better to leave the jacket open and wear a fitted vest.

Have we beaten this to death yet?

  • LadyVimes

Get that jacket to a tailor, darling, and then we’ll give you an ‘Attagirl.
From the chest up she’s magnificent. Werq those diamonds.

  • I just love that she is so classically lovely but so clearly the queen of funkiness. And I mean that in only positive ways. She loves her crazy duds and her crazy dude and she is just a little out there and it’s so nice that she maintains that. As much as I do disagree with her style choices sometimes, I am SO thankful that she has not abandoned her thrift-store chic attitude. I just love her.

  • Goes without saying that her body is beautiful even when it looks larger, but I’m always struck by how MUCH SMALLER she looks in these types of getups as opposed to the one from the other night. I like the shoes. She’s really figured out the hair recently too. Love her so much, I want a Joan spinoff

  • MK03

I’m endlessly amused by the fact that she married the guy who voiced Upchuck on Daria.

  • ScarlettHarlot

I like the pattern on the purse.

  • shopgirl716

I have a feeling he wakes up next to her every morning, looks over, and says, “I am one lucky son of a bitch.” If he doesn’t, he should.

  • Like the bag, love the makeup, the rest is all right.

  • Bozhi

I love the shoes and her makeup looks great. What is going on with her hair? It looks good but “different” somehow.

    • MilaXX

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I love the shoes. And the necklace.

He looks like the dad in the early 19th century family photos.

  • marlie

I think she looks great. Sure, there are some issues, but I love the idea of everything. And, I like the shoes (this time), as well. What I don’t like is the obvious wig-line that you can see. And he… get rid of the pornstache and he’d be fine.

    • conniemd

Yep. As I mentioned above the wig really bugged as it was so obvious.

  • Columbinia

    Fit is everything.

  • Dadasoph

I’m always a bit relieved when I see that stars are wearing wigs. Just a little less pressure on my own poor hair to be huge and perfect

    • Max Bree

Right? I want them all to wear wigs. Bring back the 18th century! My own hair is crap.

    • conniemd

I found the wig in these photos to be really obvious. For some reason it’s starting annoy me. I can dig if she has a thin head of hair (I surely do) that wouldn’t work for the 60’s stylng. When the series is over I’d like to see her real hair in a modern short cut.

  • malarson2

Just like I said in reaction to her TSwJF look from the other day: she can always change her clothes but her face and curves are forever. This look mostly supports that theory. I also like how his shirt and tie call to the color and pattern of her bag. I like them together. And just to hammer home my above point – mustaches and jacket-fits can always be improved. Happiness is real. And flattering.

  • AutumnInNY

Jacket is too tight yes, but her face is flawless. Beautiful make-up/hair recently.

  • BayTampaBay

    Love the make-up.

  • Aurumgirl

I like the shoes. I like seeing something really different, for a change. I get really bored seeing the same pair of Louboutins over and over and over again. And these shoes actually work, even though technically, they shouldn’t.

  • MasterandServant

Well if SHE can’t get a jacket that fits, there is literally no hope for the rest of us. As a busty hourglass myself, I get insanely jealous of the skinny ladies at work who can just pop on a jacket over a dress and look great.

  • MartyBellerMask

Geoffrey Arend is a man who can rock a ‘stache. This however is NOT the ‘stache. This one is giving off a “Vote for Pedro” feel. Try again, Geoff.

    • Madam Von Sassypants

      I thought the same thing.

  • carnush

The mustache is all I see. And I also think her shoes are cute and add personality to the look.

  • No yelling from me… those shoes are great!

  • BuffaloBarbara

No yelling, but I’m not on board with the shoes, either. The uppers just seem kind of awkward, and the height of the heel has passed the point where it’s flattering and gone on to just odd-looking and off-kilter. (Or maybe it’s the angle. It makes her feet look like they’re straight up and down.)

  • Mismarker

Any ill thoughts I have about either outfit come down to pure jealousy. Hedwig opening night? I would have killed to be there.

  • KinoEye

Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Christina, all in one post? Fabulous. The best thing going on here is the makeup, which has been flawless lately. He might do well to consider another style of mustache besides John Waters lite.

  • MarissaLG

If he didn’t have that stupid worm on his face, he wouldn’t look half bad. At least the suit seems to fit?

    • MartyBellerMask

I think a smile would make a world of difference. I’m swooning a little just thinking about it.

  • Max Bree

She’s an actress. She can dress like a bag of shit, as long as she can play Joan Holloway Harris I’m not mad.

  • jay

for a minute I thought she was wearing leather pants with a tuxedo jacket and I almost fainted with joy

  • Kent Roby

I’m just automatically gonna hate anyone who sees this production unless/until I see it; I love Hedwig, and think NPH will do an outstanding job the role. Ugh, okay; I’ll be nice: both she and Gomez Addams look fine here.

  • Shawn EH

I like the shoes; better than her casual flats.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I don’t mind the shoes, don’t love them, but don’t mind them….but the fit on her jacket is horrible. If I put on something for work in the morning that pulled across the chest that badly, I’d toss it in the “Donate to charity” pile and find something else to wear. There is really no excuse for Christina to be showing up in that.

  • Judy_J

I was pleased to see she was wearing shoes that have a bit more style than the flats she usually wears.

  • suzq

The shoes are the best part. I wish she could take that jacket off and end its suffering.

  • EEKstl

Au contraire, TLo – I too love the shoes!

  • largishbearishAtlish

Torn on the outfit…. A) she is going to HEDWIG for gosh sakes! so some flair could be ‘okay….’ (with out making it look like a Rocky Horror Midnight showing), b)it looks a bit ‘going to a show after work’….
I like it (and my other comment about the redhead/lipstick question…I think the addition of pink helps here…

  • Nancy Karpen

I love the shoes better than the rest of the outfit. That jacket is never going to fit a full busted woman unless it’s custom. and even then it’s a tough fit.

  • amanda lynn

    love the shoes!

  • I was amused to find out her husband played Upchuck on Daria. I like his tie. He should shave off the mustache and trim his hair short, because he just looks a little greasy here. I always love her.
