Pairs Division: Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield at “The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise Of Electro” Berlin Photocall

Posted on April 16, 2014

We’re getting a little tired of featuring them, which is what happens when the poledance for a project is a particularly long and elaborate one, but we couldn’t stay away from these pictures.

They look cute and they coordinate well; we’ll give them that. We like the color on him, but we hate the fit. Her dress is striking but like so many of the things she wears, it’s overdesigned. That cape-like back looks unnecessary to us. A little slight correcting and fitting and they could’ve looked gangbusters. As it is, they look cute, but a little on the “pretentious fashion victim” side of things.

      Two words:
      Furry Murse.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

      • KinoEye

Every working man needs one. In a sea of suits, you have to find a way to stand out in the boardroom and on the trading floor. The Furry Murse: For gentlemen who want to make a lasting impression.

    • kmk05

They’re both too pretentious. I hate the colour of his suit, but she (surprisingly!) carries off that dress well. Her hair is on point for it.

      • zenobar

The color of his suit can only be described as Basement Couch Brown.

        • jilly_d

          nailed it.

        • kimmeister

That’s diplomatic. I can think of other things that color.

        • Rhonda Shore

          70′s Basement Couch Brown…

          • KinoEye

I was getting a 70s vibe from the suit I couldn’t quite pin down. There it is.

            • Capt. Renault

I was getting a 70s-through-90s vibe, from when Ethan Hawke wore it in Reality Bites.

            • SugarSnap108

Yes, there’s an Ethan Hawke-ishness, too. It’s Pretentious 90s Hipster/70s Basement Couch Brown.

      • marlie

She doesn’t strike me as pretentious on her own, but with him…? Maybe he’s the bad influence.

        • kmk05

As an actor, entertainer, and person (HA!) I’m sure she isn’t. But her precious dress and that horrible 70s suit he’s sporting make them stink of pretentiousness, unfortunately, like a sad circle jerk with no happy ending/catch 22/negative feedback loop. It’s not helped by the scruff on his face, either (is it bad of me that I always think he looks disdainful? It makes him distasteful to me).

          • marlie

*HE* does always look disdainful, which is probably why I’ve always been a little put off by him. She’s guilty by association. ;)

            • kmk05

Ah, so I’m not the only one! I feel vindicated. People always say he’s so *cute*, and I can only wrinkle my nose at that.

She is definitely guilty by association.

          • demidaemon

I love your metaphor here, in the dirtiest way.

            • kmk05

His brown suit calls for some sleazy 70s porn metaphor, to be honest, and his scruff totally justifies it. Now if he only had a worm mustache, the image would be complete.

            • demidaemon

I’m not sure I want the image to be complete. I’m feeling torn by and strangely attracted to the idea.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

      hair is good for her..

    • kirkyo

I swear he gets better looking with every post.

      • Jacob Bowen

Yeah, I totally dug him in the first movie, but him in this suit does it even better for me. I can’t even believe I like the buttoned all the way collar.

    • kimmeister

Her dress is striking indeed, but that cape thing gives it a nun’s habit vibe.

    • MilaXX

Her dress is too busy. He looks okay but tends to stumble in the shirt department.

    • Daisy Walker

Yawn. I’m tired of them, too. Isn’t anyone else doing a poledance? How about Bill and Cathy in NZ and AUS?

    • Nikko Viquiera

You know, I really appreciate the effort they put into this whole poledance. Especially Andrew, who proves that boys should no always play it safe.

    • decormaven

That’s a plethora of doodads on her outfit; not feeling it. He’s doing a bit better in his suiting.

    • Jessica Freeman

      No capes!

      • Evan

Normally I agree with this quote, but Lupita WERQed a cape at the Globes and I hate to admit it, but Gwyneth looked pretty good in that Tom Ford cape dress at the Oscars a couple of years ago.

        • Jessica Freeman

Well its pretty much not fair to compare Lupita’s ability to pull off just about anything to Emma…however, I said it more as a reference to the Edna Mode referring to superheroes and NO CAPES! considering she is spiderman’s date, and spiderman does not wear a cape. =)

          • cocohall

Bless you for the Edna Mode reference.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

It is a literal translation of the movie.

It is the equivalent of interpretative dance of the movie.

IT IS THE MOVIE INTERPRETED BY FASHION!

Red crystal encrusted spiders, flying through a blue sky.

Except, why did nobody tell them spiders have 8 legs not 5? :) whoa, bizarre.. did they confuse their octagons with pentagons?

    • Kent Roby

      Cathy Cambridge Couture.

    • Courtenay P

I really hope he’s wearing the shoes in the model photo. those are great.

    • dalgirl

      I see a sweatband on Emma’s dress.

    • Anna

If the dress weren’t so overly bedazzled, she’s actually serving up some major Hitchcock heroine.

Hitchcock heroines look odd paired with Napoleon Dynamite, though.

    • LadyVimes

Her dress is too fussy for daywear.
      SHAVE, loverboy.

    • Shawn EH

Like his suit, hate her dress.

    • Watterson

Fur briefcase tote is really the only thing I’ve managed to take from these pictures. I need a little time to recover and process that before I can look at anything else.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

If her dress didn’t have that black bit at the neck, and lost the cape, I think it’d be really pretty. But then I’d really like her to have some little white gloves on.

      • KinoEye

I thought she DID have little white gloves on in the first shot where the lighting’s super harsh on her hand. I was disappointed to find there were no gloves.

    • PhillyDeb

Erdem. I have come to a decision. I do not like. I don’t know who Erdem designs for, but I do not believe I have ever liked anyone in any of his items.

      • conniemd

Michelle Dockery has looked good in Erdem. The are different in their vibe, liking prints and offbeat combinations, but not in Peter Pilloto territory.

    • KinoEye

Beautiful dress, but it’s too much dress for her to handle. Ship that one off to someone who can really handle the tricky designs. She shines in clean and simple, with a twist. Not crazy about his suit, but I suppose it gets the job done.

      • jtabz

Agreed. I think the dress would be killer — cape and all — on a wearer with a little bit more command over her clothes. Emma’s lovely, but this overpowers her.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

ugh… not these two again. let me guess, she’s wearing some slightly odd or unflattering haute couture with either bad hair or weird makeup, sometimes both. i like her as an actress and think she’s adorable on chat shows but i’m so sick of her style.

    • Danielle

He looks way too dandy for my liking.

    • Violentcello

They look like a political couple. I think he’s the one running for office. She’s a little too flashy for people to vote for her, but they can’t wait for her to be First Lady. He’s running a Hickenlooper-inspired no-negative-ads campaign. People will vote for him because he seems nice and down-to-earth in his ill-fitting suit, bless him.

    • Eric Stott

That dress looks a little too much like a brooch display. The best I can say about HIM is that he looks better than the model…though since his feet aren’t visible I have my reservations about the high water pants cuffs. (The picture of that poor model is too sad for words)

    • Belvane

That dress would be spectacular on Michelle Obama.

    • Capt. Renault

      1. OK, you look nice.
      2. No, I still won’t see your movie.

    • Kitten_Mittens

I don’t know why, but as cute and beautiful as they are, the two of them as a couple seems to have no chemistry… especially on the red carpet. They are the milquetoast of celebrity couples.

    • sagecreek

Way too much detail on the dress. I’d facepalm, too.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

That dress is way too high concept for a big movie photocall. I appreciate the effort, but you can’t win mainstream fans dressing like this, which is what I assume they want since they’re starring in Spider-Man 2. They just look like assholes.

      • alyce1213

I wanted to say that, but I didn’t have the nerve, so thank you!

    • teensmom99

She’s a petite little thing in important Fashion (with a capital eff). I’m not saying she should go full manic pixie because I realize that would drive the bk’s crazy but in the past few days I’ve been thinking how twee would make sense for her.

    • stubbornthoughts

I really love this on both of them. They look like movie stars. The colors are working for me very well.

    • MartyBellerMask

The thumbnail really had me thinking she was wearing an ugly sweater. Kinda wish she was.

    • B_C_J

The suit coat fits him well. The pants do not. The inseam definitely needs shortening. Her dress is beautiful but the cape is not working.

    • alyce1213

Oof. I hate that dress. HATE! I don’t really see much coordination between them. I think they look like they’re attending two different functions in different places at different times of the day. That suit is dorky on him. Fashion Victims.

    • BlairBear

I would have loved him so much if he carried the muppet murse and I wouldn’t normally use the word murse but it plays so nicely with muppet

    • conniemd

The male model is driving me crazy with the too short, too small a cuff pants and white socks. I remember pulling out white socks for my hubby one day early in our marriage and he screeched at me that a man should never wear white socks with a suit.

    • JeanProuvaire

Her dress looks like some kind of Eastern European folk costume, which could be cool if it weren’t in quite such a literal sense.

    • marlie

I LOVE her dress. I think it’s really, really pretty. I love the beading detail, though agree that the cape shouldn’t have been a mullet. As for him, I hate the color of his suit SO HARD.

    • alliekat9090

Where is the beatiful multi colored, gold trimmed, ankle length Chanel gypsy dress she wore? This is meh. That one was epic.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Clumsy use of great fabric and embroidery… A real shame!

    • oohsparkley!

I can’t pass full judgment without seeing the shoes and hemlines. Based on what I see, I’ll go with interesting. Minnesota nice for not wanting to criticize.

    • nannypoo

Wow. They both look awful. I will say he looks better than the model, but that’s only because the model looks so ridiculous.

    • TwiddlyStun

I would really like to buy her a little pomade to keep the wispiness under control. I think if her head looked more polished she could pull off more of the fashion she wears. Am I too optimistic?

    • Ashleigh

Is it just me, or does a shirt like this look silly buttoned all the way up without a tie (or bow tie or whatever)?

    • snarkykitten

He looks like he looks like he smells like stale cigarettes and moth balls, in a Grandma Ethel’s couch kind of of way.
She looks like she’s trying way too hard. That dress is beyond her skills, me-thinks. (plus it’s hideous)

    • KM

It’s Emma Stone, she’s the problem, leave Garfy alone!
Have you SEEN Boy A? He’s an actual, proper actor, she is dragging him down majorly and so is this damned franchise.

    • FridaStaire

WTF? She should start wearing the spiderman suit, like the fans.
