Sarah Hyland Style Double Shot

Posted on February 21, 2014

Kittens, here’s a perfect example of Girl, That’s Your Dress/Girl, That’s Not Your Dress.

Super cute and fresh; totally suits her. This would be a difficult look for her to screw up. While we don’t think white should necessarily be her first choice of color, the dress has enough interesting design elements (not to mention a shape that’s perfect for her) that it’s not an issue. Love the shoes. Kinda hate the hair.

And then there’s this:

It’s not a terrible dress…

Okay, no. It’s pretty bad on its own. It looks like something from that section of the Target store devoted to teenage girls’ bedroom/dorm room decor. That would be the section we never enter, but can’t help noticing from far away because it’s such an explosion of bright pink synthetic fabrics. And because she’s such a tiny little thing, the shape is doing nothing for her.

Stick to the dresses with a little shape to them, dear. And stay away from acid-pinks, would you?

Actually, I think both of these are vast improvements over her usual style…

  • Jennifer

That first pair of shoes is TDF

  • marlie

That first look is absolutely adorable. Cute dress, cute shoes, it suits her age… I like it. Also, her makeup isn’t quite so heavily applied, which suits her as well. The second look is ok, but the shape is a little more mature, and it’s not doing her figure or personality any favors.

  • marlie

Also, she’s so, so, so adorable when she actually *smiles*! She should do it on the red carpet more often.

    • Ginger

That was my exact same reaction! She usually looks smug. When she smiles her face lights up and she looks friendly and approachable.

  • altalinda

Hmm, I like the pink one, too. It’s okay to wear a dress that’s not form-fitting from time to time.

    • 3boysful

Me, too, but I do think she’s too petite to really carry off that shape. It’s one of life’s sad ironies that the people who can best wear that silhouette are the leggy girls with nothing to camogflage.

      • JimMcC

Interesting. I actually thought it worked for her BECAUSE she’s so tiny.

And sure, it looks a little downmarket, maybe, but I think it’s adorable without crossing the line to precious. All the more impressive given how easy it is for her to look twee given her features.

Big snaps to her makeup artist who has really managed in the past few
months to make her sparkle given that in earlier times she could occasionally look…shellacked.

        • Kent Roby

It’s interesting reading the differing opinions, like you and 3boysful re: her petiteness making the dress work or not. Someone else felt that the pink dress is too mature; I see it as being likely to skew more junior, but I do like it (and the first look) on her. Viva La Difference!

    • ConnieBV

I like the color. If it had a waist, it could have been cute.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I like the pink dress too. I think one of the problems is she’s standing in front of such a bold (different) pink background.

  • jw_ny

convert your “acid pink” pillow sham into a cocktail dress…instructions on pinterest. 😉

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

She is looking more and more like Mila Kunis.

  • @Biting Panda

Hmmmm. i like both, actually. I read she had to have a fan tossed out on his ass because he groped her during a photo op. She’s just a little bitty thing (much like my new very best friend Kristen Bell) I imagine she has issues all the time with shorter dresses looking too juvenile on her. I say these are both her dresses.

    • He’s been arrested I believe. So I am not going to say anything negative about her today!

      • @Biting Panda

Good for her! I’m sure it happens to celebs more often than people think and they just smile and grit their teeth, in order to not look bitchy.

    • Alyssa

Kristen Bell has been my imaginary best friend since her Veronica Mars days…does that make us best friends by association? 🙂

      • @Biting Panda

        Of course!!

She and I had a brief (but meaningful) Twitter interaction, so I’ll see if she’ll let you sit with us at lunch. TLo’s book would tell you this is just part of the celebrity game and that her Twitter love was a calculated move, but clearly, that does not apply to me and our conversation. After all, she added “xo” so it must be genuine. I’m expecting her to call me, anytime now, for drinks, shopping, braiding each other’s hair, etc.

        • Jacob Bowen

You better learn a new Pinterest braid, you need to impress!

        • Alyssa

Oohhh…that almost makes me want to join Twitter! And I completely agree…your conversation seems totally legit. I have a love of sloths too (they’re just so cute!), so I feel like she & I were meant to be BFFs. I can’t wait til we all go out for drinks!

  • Lily

I’m just glad she’s branched out into things that aren’t skin-tight or boring.

  • SewingSiren

The white is cute, but I LOVE the pink. It looks like a vintage cocktail dress from the 60’s. I think in regular lighting or low lighting it would be fantastic.

    • SugarSnap108

I like it, too. Glad I’m not alone.

      • mjude

same here. maybe a different color for me. but I am kinda digging it 🙂

      • SewingSiren

Well then just for you I’ll add that it looks like a vintage cocktail dress that I own and used to wear. Sadly now belong to the dress category “just because you fit into it, doesn’t mean it fits” . It’s a teen dress anyway. I tried to pawn it off on my daughter, but she’ll have nothing to do with hot pink, silk chiffon overly does’t turn her head at all.

    • Evan

Makes me think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

  • MilaXX

Someone finally figured out how to pant her face with out her looking like a creepy kewpie doll. First look is perfect for her. I don’t mind the color of the second look, but that’s a dress for the flat chested gals.

    • Imasewsure

I was thrilled to see this makeup job too… she looks cute and about as un-doll-;like as possible for such a Kewpie. Hope it’s a trend that continues for her!!

  • Adrianna Grężak

I hate the shoes in the first look. Can the stripper platform trend be over already?

  • SugarSnap108

I would love that first dress in a color. The white, with the silly putty shoes, is bland. I actually think she looks pretty cute in the second one.

  • Sarah

I think both are okay – second is definitely not one for the ages, though. What is bugging me most about it, actually, is that the shoes are WAY too big. Gr. I sorta think the white dress is just a wee bit too big, but it is sure a cute shape.

  • hughman

She really needs to avoid clothes that enable her looking like a Disney Cartoon.

    • @Biting Panda

I don’t think she’s able to wear a different head. Sister has the doe eyes, what can she do? Every outfit is will either be Twee as Fuck or Little Girl Dress Sexy Ew Gross.

      • hughman

If she really cared about us and our opinions, she would wear a different head.

        • Be careful what you wish for.

      • KinoEye

She does have that perpetual babyface look, which is weird when she’s just one year younger than me. I get the same thing with Selena Gomez. She looks about 14 to me, no matter what she wears. Maybe Hyland should look to Amanda Seyfried, who is similarly doe-eyed, for some inspiration on more grown-up looks.

        • Evan

I’m 23 (almost 24) and I have the same problem as her and Selena Gomez (perpetual baby face), but I’m a guy. Not sure what to do about it since you can’t change your face (other than plastic surgery of course, which would be ridic).

          • SierraDelta

            Facial hair?

  • Danielle

That white dress needs to come live in my closet.

  • lamamu

Not a fan of the second dress. (The Target analogy is spot on). BUT that pink is lovely on her. She has just the right coloring to pull it off. (This from a redhead who belongs nowhere near that shade of pink. Sigh.)

  • Cortney Dean

I don’t mind the shape of the 2nd one because it allows her to have a burger AND fries for lunch. The color and the fabric aren’t the best choices, but I’m all for non-figure-hugging dresses on occasion. I mean, yes, it doesn’t define her waist, but it isn’t like there is a doubt in the world that she’s a tiny little thing, so, I say bring on the fries.

  • alyce1213

    I like both.

  • Elana Bryan

Gotta go against my uncles and say that I like the pink dress. She looks very stylish.

  • bellafigura1

I love this little pink thing. I agree about the hair, though, maybe she was fighting humidity?

  • OhSheila

    skater skirts ftw

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I like them both. The first one has a little too many bandages for my taste and the second one just needs some white go-go boots to finish it off.

  • bassfemme

My Barbie, circa 1972, had that second dress!! I loved it then, too.

  • Jacob Bowen

The second dress reminds me of an upside down lamp shade…

  • Karen Belgrad

I don’t know… it feels weird to offer opinions on the white dress. That’s what she was wearing when some random guy grabbed her breast (he’s been arrested) and she left the event in tears. It’s all over People and EW today.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the shoes on any of the looks and I agree that that shade of pink is not her color (she seems to have a warm complexion and that pink is cold) ad the fabric of the second dress looks cheap, but both looks are vast improvements over her usual look.

  • decormaven

I wish the second look had been a little more fitted to her shape. That’s a very cute dress- very 1968-69.

  • Am I crazy or has she worn that pink Temperley London dress before?

  • Glam Dixie

Second dress is Angela Keslar for Target. Love the first one and I wants those shoes.

  • halleygee

I like the pink look because she seems to like it. She looks miserable in the first dress.

  • I love the earrings in the second look. Makes me want to pierce my ears… and then I remember hearing it’s painful to do so. I shun pain!

    • sagecreek

It only hurts for a second! And then you can buy earrings. Lots and lots of earrings. I probably could have financed a house with all the earrings I have purchased. Okay, wait, maybe you are right 🙂

  • cocohall

    Oh she’s adorable in both!

  • LeelaST

Hmmm…I like dress and shoes #2.

  • YoungSally

That first dress was so good that some guy tried to (or actually did) cop a boobie feel.

  • jilly_d

I dunno, I kinda like the pink one on her. But I agree, the white is better. Both are improvements on her past attempts. Makeup looks flawless.

  • Dagney

She really needs a new stylist and a new makeup artist.

  • prisma

Eh, I don’t disagree with the TLo about the pink dress but I still think it’s cute on her.

  • quiltrx

That pink dress looks like nightgown material…the kind that gets hideous static cling and is all up around your waist before you know it.

    • hmb

Flame retardant treated poly sleepwear fabric…

  • Lilyana_F

She’s such a doll, but yeah, the pink shapeless dress is not working for her.

    • Shawn EH

It works with her makeup; she could do the Liz Taylor Cleopatra eye, no problem. Just needs a little better fabric and shape, more mod.

  • jay

I love that there’s a moment in that first dress where it appears that the underarm-hanger-loop-thing is starting to sneak its way out. that happens to me ALL THE TIME. (Stars! They’re just like us!)

  • Hermione

The white dress is o.k. but i hate the shoes–she looks like she’s playing dress up with Mom’s shoes. On the other hand, I like her in the pink dress.

  • That’s so funny, I love the second dress. I think it’s cute as hell. hmmm….a rare disagreement…

  • kategs

I look at both of these and I totally utterly disagree. The first look is completely overworked and washes her out to boot. The pink is fun and flirty and age appropriate. And it’s not acid it’s rose pink.

  • MannahattaMamma

That bright pink looks so utterly flammable that I hope there were no open flames anywhere near her.

  • stubbornthoughts

Oddly enough, I prefer the second look. The first one, while cool and interesting, is doing weird things to the shape of her body, making her tiny frame look wider than it is. Either that or it’s Monday fucking morning and my brain hasn’t switched on yet.

  • Sally Spannagle

Actually, I think both of these looks are the best I’ve ever seen her. Love them both.
