Yesterday, we noted that Lindsay Lohan was making the promo rounds to promote Freakier Friday in a look that felt like a throwback to her earlier career. We were more right than we knew, because it turned out she was wearing an homage to one of the twins she played in The Parent Trap. She followed that up with another one when she hit the Good Morning America studios looking like Cher Horowitz:

Let’s get this out of the way first: it’s not a salute to the Clueless character, it’s an homage to the other twin in The Parent Trap:

And now we have to be more blunt about it: we hate this style direction for her and we think it’s a terrible idea. Andrew Mukamal made a name for himself by clothing Margot Robbie in a succession of themed outfits for the Barbie promotional tour and it was a fantastic idea. But this sort of thing feels less savvy. For one, why would you promote one film by dressing like characters from a different film? For another, why would you, while on your comeback tour after decades of bad press, be so backward-looking in your approach? This isn’t the time to remind people of who you were 25 years ago. It’s the time to show people that you’re hot and ready to keep working. Then there’s the whole Clueless thing. A yellow plaid skirt suit is always going to read as an homage to it, why remind people of yet another unrelated film? And finally, we think some of these looks come off a little too cutesy-youthful. This is essentially a take on a schoolgirl outfit, complete with headband. It’s not that we think she appears too old for these styles – this actually looks great on her – but it definitely smacks of someone trying to rewrite or relive their own youth. She should be proudly embracing who she is now, not constantly reminding us of who she was then.
