Good Lady Cate kicks off 2023 red carpetry and serves the opening volley of her awards season campaign style as she swung by the New York Film Critics Circle Awards to pick up a Best Actress trophy. In other words…
… she Tár’d herself up for the occasion. We tend to be cranky about actors dressing up in costume as their characters, but in this case, it’s hard to separate Cate’s current style from her character Lydia Tár’s. Long before promoting the film about the abusive conductor with a predilection for male clothing, Cate started showing a preference for stripped-back suiting in basic black and white. We sincerely doubt we’ll be seeing her at the more high-profile awards ceremonies dressed like this, but this is the perfect sort of “serious actress” ensemble a bunch of New York film critics want to see on their winning picks. It’s branding and campaigning as much as it is fashion. The boots really make the look. That tricky hem would be a lot more annoying without them.
