Clarity arrives with the light of day, darlings. We saw Penélope’s dress last night and were immediately underwhelmed by it. We said as much in our quick n’ dirty rundown for Cosmopolitan last night. But at some point after the dust and the drama had died down, hours after we filed our piece and well into the deepest hours of the night (we’d had a LOT of coffee), we wondered if we weren’t being too harsh about it. We covered a bit of her film festival and awards fashion over the season (not enough to put together an “ology” post, alas), and it seemed to us that Chanel had been letting her down so often that it was a rare occasion when they got one right for her. Maybe we were jumping to conclusions. All day, we kept meaning to return to it to see if we’d been hasty and finally, when we’d gotten to all the frocks and suits we wanted to cover first, we took a good long look at Miss Penélope’s dress.

Turns out we were right! It IS underwhelming! Lady, you’re a movie star, this is the Oscars, and that’s a free Chanel gown. The combined effect should be more dazzling than this. He’s alright. They’re admirably well matched. We just think her dress looks a little overdesigned in some parts and underdesigned in others. It just doesn’t add up to enough.
