Oscars Style File: Scarlett Johansson in Oscar de la Renta

There are two things we’ve observed about Miss Scarlet’s formal red carpet wear over the years. The first is that she takes a workmanlike approach; a “gets the job done” style. The second, slightly contradictory observation, is that her style still tends to be either over thought or overwrought. There’s always some detail – usually the makeup or hair, sometimes the dress itself – that comes on too strong or feels out of place. But we have to say, Miss Lady nailed it this time. She kept things simple, got the job done with a minimum of fuss, looked great, and didn’t overthink things.

To be fair, we honestly don’t like either dress. We can live with the first choice. The silver looks great on her and she kept her hair and makeup simple and flattering. We’re not crazy about the chain effect in the bust but at least it’s not as tacky as the dress she wore to the after party. But our personal taste isn’t the point here. She toned down her worst instincts and came out looking every inch a star by sticking to a simple theme all night.
