Oh thank GOD. FINALLY a celebrity who understands that if you get front-row invitations to Paris shows, you should take the opportunity to turn the fashion dials to eleven. Nothing more boring than a lady star in front of the Eiffel Tower looking like any other dime-a-dozen ingenue. Miss Cardi clearly gets it.
Cardi B in Thom Browne
LOVE.
What’s great about this look is that it plays into her cartoon-like persona while still maintaining a very serious and refined undertone. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine Thom Browne’s work out in the real world, but on the right wearer, with the right attitude, and obviously in the right setting, it can be fabulous and unforgettable. What other celebrity stepped out of her hotel looking like this lately? Zero critiques. The glasses and lacquered hair were great touches.
Cardi B in Richard Quinn
Kittens, we gasped. In case you were wondering who that was with the paint dripping down their face on the top right on our book cover, it’s none other than the legendary Leigh Bowery, whose work pushing the boundaries of drag and performance art in the ’80s and ’90s still echoes powerfully through the fashion world today, where he continues to inspire the biggest names in fashion decades after his death from AIDS complications. This is a very clear homage to some of Leigh’s signature looks, combining the facekini, retro romantic florals and overpowering silhouettes he often favored. What was avant-garde a quarter century ago is high fashion and as close to mainstream as it’s ever been today. We realize this look is a lot to take in, but there’s actual history and artistry behind it and she has our highest respect for giving it a go.
