Neener neener.

We don’t actually like rooting against someone in an Oscar race, if only because turning art into a competition is reductive for everyone involved. It’s trite, but there’s real value in acknowledging that a nomination alone is a reward for excellent work. So congrats to Prince Timmée for achieving this career high. We’re still thrilled to death that he didn’t win. We devoted last week’s podcast to discussing most of this, but to sum up: He didn’t lose the Oscar because he made ill-considered remarks about ballet and opera. Oscar voting had closed by the time that thing blew up and besides, it’s more accurate to say he didn’t win the Oscar because ultimately more voters thought Michael B. Jordan’s performance was more deserving. But there’s an overwhelming sense that he fumbled this one because unlike Michael B. Jordan and Sinners, his crowning was seen as an inevitability by the press and the industry from before Marty Supreme even opened. We were rooting against him because he brashly thought he could ignore the usual avenues for Oscar campaigning and banked his success on publicity stunts like standing on top of the Sphere, launching Marty Supreme pop-up shops, doing CNN town halls, and releasing satirical Zoom videos, all the while giving speeches and sound bites about how he’s pursuing excellence in his craft and achieving greatness. We made the observation months ago that he was campaigning less like an actor and more like a combination of rock star and sports star. Turns out? That shit doesn’t fly with the Academy. In fashion news, the suit is very nice and we like the rings, but his head styling just makes him look like an asshole.
