We said last year during his stunt-heavy press junket for A Complete Unknown that it was quite possible that Timothee Chalamet will wind up rewriting the Oscar campaigning rules for men — but only if he manages to win one, of course. We tend to think that’s only a matter of time, but we also tend to think that if he doesn’t snag one this time, he may have to wind up reverting to his old, more upscale promo style. For now, he’s the biggest stunt queen in the business.

We don’t mind the style all that much. While it feels way too casual for the setting, we can’t argue that he’s supposed to be wearing a suit for the occasion. Still, in a venue where every woman is expected to come out in a dress and heels, this feels a bit lazy and dumb. We also tend to think he’s trying like hell to appear much younger than he is. Which isn’t to say thirty-year-old guys don’t or can’t dress this way, but he’s really selling that “brash young man pursuing greatness unconventionally” line like crazy. We just can’t get behind the idea of promoting your film wearing clothes with the title emblazoned on it. He’s campaigning for an Oscar as if he were a pop star while dressed like a professional athlete. On a certain level, we respect how carefully thought-out it all is; the way it’s calibrated to appeal to the widest male demographic. But like we said, it’ll only be a genius move if it actually lands him that trophy.
