Princess Cathy came out in high royal style for Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey. We’ve said it before but it bears repeating: any time there’s a cathedral or a tiara involved, she’s at her royal style best. While we think she prefers her more relatable pantsuits and activewear moments, when it comes time to serve up the kind of drag the people expect to see in this moment, she always steps up.

The royal coatdress remains her signature look and we predict she’ll be wearing it at her children’s and grandchildren’s weddings. She doesn’t return to it as often as she used to, which is good, because it started becoming something of a cliche. She’s loosened up and broadened her style just a bit over the last several years, which has less to do with family drama or perceived rivalries, as some royal fans and writers insist, and more to do with the kind of changes that happen pretty naturally when you reach your forties and/or if you’ve had a serious health scare. So we don’t see Classic Coatdress Cathy as much as we used to, but that’s a good thing, and it makes moments like this stand out more. This one is a stunner. The pleating detail is gorgeous. Of course it’s all as matchy as humanly possible, which gives it a costume or uniform feel, as she prefers. We’ve never particularly enjoyed her more elaborate fascinators, but we can’t say we’re in love with this chapeau. The netting is mumsy and we don’t like the way the brim curves down. We’re not convinced these wide-brimmed styles work all that well for her.
