We singled out Miss Kate’s gown in our Cosmo writeup, but we still feel the need to give it a little spotlight time, partially because we love it and partially because we’re trying to give the major Oscar players their campaign time. We’ve said before that we tend to prefer it when she sticks to her boho/hippy chick preferences, if only because they suit her and they seem to make her happy. But she’s good about using fashion to sort of embody her own history or work, and sometimes that means reminding people that she’s Hollywood royalty.
It’s giving Old Hollywood — and yes, they sported cutouts on red carpets eighty years ago. This looks like something Carole Lombard or Hedy Lamarr might have worn to the Oscars. In the light of day, we can admit that we don’t love the bandeau shape of the bust and we think the hair needs a more formal style, but those are our only quibbles. We don’t think white is the best choice for her, but it adds to the drama of the look as well as the classic, black-and-white movie feel of it. You can tell she loves it.
