Catherine, Princess of Wales Visits Wales

Princess Cathy went to Wales to do a little sewing and not to be bitchy about it or anything, but she actually gave us a discussable, slightly unusual outfit to consider. Honestly, we’re not being mean about that. We get that a combination of her role and her ambitions (i.e., the means by which she executes her role in the manner she wants) caused her to settle on a style that’s specific and generic at the same time. By that we mean that she dresses in a recognizably royal manner, but she sticks to an extremely limited and relatively modest style. Anyway, here she is, in an outfit that looks more like something Queen Maxima might wear.

That is a highly unusual coat for her. Under it, she’s sporting an almost-as-unlikely contrasting Victoria Beckham ensemble. The combination is kind of interesting because we don’t think it looks like her normal style at all. Let’s back up for a second. The Princess of Wales visited Hiut Denim, and Melin Tregwynt, a woollen mill specializing in weaving traditional Welsh designs. What Kate Wore pegged the coat as either a vintage Melin Tregwynt textile or a reproduction of one, but either way, it’s one of the Princess’s more specific homages to the locals. We suspect it’s actually vintage because her coats usually fit better than this. It’s striking partially because it looks vintage, which lends it a personality she tends to avoid in her public dressing. We’d love it if she wore this again for some random, non-Wales-based engagement. We just don’t think that ensemble works under it. We can’t believe we’re saying this, because we’ve spent decades railing against her matchiness, but going with a contrasting green (which we feel we should applaud anyway) just doesn’t look great under it. Browns and reds would look great – including colors in the pink, orange, and purple range. In related news, the curls be curling.
