Line up, ladies! As always with major awards shows, in order to cover as many attendees as we can in as short a period as two people can manage, we have to shove them into arbitrary groupings. This year, the most predominant trend on the Golden Globes red carpet was funeral frocks. Why so serious, gals? Just kidding! We know why. Let’s assess.
Aimee Lou Wood in Vivienne Westwood

Dreary and stale. It does absolutely nothing for her and it doesn’t highlight her personality at all.
Ana de Armas in Louis Vuitton

On the one hand, we remain impressed that she’s a Louis Vuitton ambassador who manages to only snag the non-cray LV pieces. On the other hand, while she looks undoubtedly gorgeous, this is kind of boring and forgettable.
Ariana Grande in Vivienne Westwood

We were genuinely surprised to see her pull an Elphaba after so many Glindas. We like the texture and the heaviness of the gown, if only because they serve as correctives to all of those fluffy confections she’s worn in recent years. Hate the neckline and the goofy straps.
Ayo Edebiri in Chanel

We urged her to adopt a more polished sort of red carpet style but we fear she’s over-corrected in response. This adds about forty years to her age. The dress is nice enough, but that Pelosi hair isn’t helping it.
Jenna Ortega in Dilara Findikoglu

Honestly, one of the worst dresses of the night and easily the worst thing we’ve ever seen her wear. It’s just a collection of terrible design choices.
Lisa in Jacquemus

Meh. If you’re going to do sheer, it can’t be boring. The necklace doesn’t go with the neckline.
Mia Goth in Dior

It’s polished and elegant, but extremely dull. We get that she likes a low key style, but given her rather dour posing style, she could really use some more exuberance in her fashion. That crumb catcher bodice looks dumb.
Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent

We’re surprised to admit we love this. We tend to hate fan ruffles and our first impulse was to call this too mature for her, but the longer we take it in, the more it appeals to us. The bust is genuinely kind of interesting and the pendant was really well chosen to set it off.
Robin Wright in Ralph Lauren

Can’t argue with that, although we’d have rec’d a cuff and/or a cocktail ring.
