The interesting thing about Princess Cathy’s somewhat restrained and conservative public style is that the less formal iterations of it are rarely as stylish as the more officially official ones. You give her an early childhood development program(me) to tour and she’ll show up in something acceptable, appropriate, and more than half the time, completely forgettable. You give her the chance to greet a world leader and she’s going to snap to pure Dictator’s Wife style; precision, military undertones, impeccability and more than a little severity:

Like all of her public style choices, it’s extremely situation-specific. She dresses like a working mom when she’s doing day engagements and touring charities, but she dresses like the wife of a king when she needs to do stuff like this. We should note that this isn’t exactly a royal uniform. It’s not like all queens and princesses dress like this. Her direct antecedents certainly didn’t. Anyway, the coat is a stunner, but the simple shell top looks odd with it.
