One of the interesting things that these ologies tend to reveal is both who is campaigning the hardest and how certain avenues for promotion are more open to some stars then others. For instance, someone like Kate Hudson got invited to a lot of fashion industry dinners and galas in the last year, while nominees like Wunmi Mosaku or Michael B. Jordan can add things like the NAACP Image Awards or the Black Film Awards to their calendars.

For an indie guy like Ethan Hawke, who is also not a fashion guy, the times and places where he can utilize fashion to campaign for awards is a bit limited in comparison to some of the other stars, but when we pulled this rundown together, we were surprised to see how much he utilized some of the biggest names in menswear design.

His preferences run toward more boho styles, but he’s extremely clear-eyed about being a performer. He’s not a fashion guy, but all of his choices have an innate theatricality to them that’s appealing, even when he’s working a fairly conventional look.

But he remains true to himself as loudly and as often as he can, which we can’t help but admire, even when we’re not feeling the results. He bounces back and forth between these “I’m just a jester, here to entertain you” styles…

… and more sleek entries that speak to his years of experience and the knowledge that this kind of career attention ebbs and flows, so you better make the most of it while you can.

And boy, does he ever love himself a string tie.

He’ll never make us love them…

But we can appreciate when someone has a distinct preference and utilizes it well. Put it this way: we’d hate it if he duded it up with a stetson and cowboy boots or a Nudie suit.

We suspect he’ll be a bit more conventional on the big night. At the very least, we hope there aren’t any more hideous vests in the planning. But we really do appreciate that he campaigned with flair and an understanding that he was taking it seriously, but not too seriously.
