The stars all came to the Chanel show in Paris and in return, the house made sure that absolutely none of them were wearing anything even remotely indicative of the Chanel aesthetic. Granted, the brand has needed a refresh for at least a decade now and there’s a serious conversation to be had about whether the classic Chanel suit even has a use in this day and age, but even so. You’d think this was a runway show for the GAP going by some of these looks.
Ayo Edebiri

To be fair, no one here looks bad, which is sort of a point in favor of just keeping the looks as minimalist as possible.
Lily-Rose Depp

It’s funny. Whenever patterned tights swing back into trend, there’s about five minutes before everyone collectively remembers that most of them look terrible on the wearer. We’re in that five minutes right now. This ensemble is fine, but those lattice legs look terrible.
Margot Robbie

Modern, generic.
Marion Cotillard

At a certain point, you’ve got to ask whether it’s worth paying Chanel prices at all if everything looks so off-the-rack.
Naomi Campbell

The skirt’s cute enough, but it is a crime against fashion that Chanel put Naomi Campbell in a quarter-zip.
Nicole Kidman

Ceramics class. We’re just gonna group the next two looks together (largely because neither of them inspire more than a couple words):
Pedro Pascal

Penélope Cruz

These are parent-teacher night outfits.
Tilda Swinton

The only one who manages to make what she’s wearing look like high fashion. Those ankle strap slingbacks are a crime against humanity, however.
