Camila Cabello came to the Vogue Dia de Muertos Gala to present her own grandmother with the Abuelita Award and also to work a classic look that feels just right for the occasion.

As we always say regarding black dresses on red carpets: make it interesting. If it’s not, it’ll just be an unphotogenic void in pictures. There’s nothing particularly exciting about the design, but considering it’s nearly two decades old and feels current, we’d say that makes it a classic. We tend to dislike pearls with gowns because we think it looks stale as hell, but this choker is so dramatic that it actually elevates the look. It’s not a complaint or critique, but we might have steered her toward something darker or starker, like gold or rubies or even something black around her neck, but that might have tipped this over into cliche territory. The hair and makeup really aren’t up to the level of the dress and jewelry, however. That necklace demands an up do and some coordinating chandeliers.
