We can’t say that we gave the matter much thought, but if you’d asked us a month ago about Mariska Hargitay’s promotional style, we’d have said it was of the “get it done” variety and that she didn’t strike us as much of a fashion girly. But looking over the style choices she’s been making while promoting My Mom Jayne, the documentary she directed about her mother Jayne Mansfield, we think we’ve got her figured out.
IN REBECCA VALLANCE AT THE VIEW STUDIOS
This is cute and sort of flirty in a way we wouldn’t have predicted for her. The dress and shoes are cute, but that coat’s kind of weird. Clearly, this project means the world to her and she’s excited about it, so her style on this tour has been surprisingly versatile and loaded with personality. If her style seemed basic and professional to us before this, it was because of Ellen Pompeo Syndrome; that thing where your employment is so locked-up and your audience is so locked-in for the foreseeable future that you really don’t have to even think about things like red carpets or photo calls if you don’t want to.
AT THE VIEW STUDIOS
We don’t think we’ve ever seen her in an outfit with that much boldness and personality to it. The print is not to our tastes, but the colors look great on her. We’d have liked a proper belt and a cuff on those sleeves.
AT THE TODAY SHOW STUDIOS
This is probably the best thing we’ve ever seen her wear. The very picture of a glamour kickass bitch. She’s not doing Jayne Mansfield cosplay and that’s smart of her, but she has ramped up the glamour and girliness of her style choices, which is a nice way of reinterpreting them for this project without being costumey about it.
