Cynthia Erivo is the current reigning queen of maximalism, so with the Wicked: For Good trailer and a brand new album dropped in the same week, plus her already controversial upcoming turn in Jesus Christ Superstar as the lead character, the booked and busy star just had to go and work three looks for one late night appearance.

We love this. Schoolgirl-adjacent styles can be extremely iffy in a million different ways, but the way this combines elements of grunge and even elements of queer drag takes it far away from any Lolita-esque vibes. It’s such a distinct blend of styles that it feels uniquely suited to her alone.

This is also spectacular and trades the street-worthy style of her previous look for some true Broadway Baby/musical theater legend chicness. Even with the schoolgirl skirt (and those awful dangling threads which we will pretend not to see from this point on), it’s got a little bit of Fosse and Judy in it, and that suits her really well. She looks polished (literally) and ready to pick up her next round of awards. But girlfriend came with a song in her heart (and an album to promote), which meant that she came with another dress in her trunk.

Hate it. We appreciate that she came with three distinct looks – possibly in reference to the three projects she’s promoting – and we also understand why she’d want to switch things up and go for something softly romantic, since she’s been working some seriously intense fashion for a while now, but this is entirely too much lace and satin for anyone who’s not currently getting married, sleeping or dead.
