We were going to throw this one out to y’all for a vote – and of course, there’s nothing preventing you from weighing in with your opinion (it’s encouraged, in fact!) – but once we took in the full effect of Sarah Paulson’s ensemble for the Museum of Contemporary Art Gala in LA, we decided we wanted to dive in on this one ourselves.

First, we won’t claim that we love this. That shade of pink is terrible generally, but it’s also bad for her coloring specifically. Certain shades of pink are going to make the average pale wearer look a little yellow in comparison and this one’s giving her jaundice. In addition, we’re not loving the intense wrinkling at all. It’s clearly part of the design; meant to give it that sumptuous, old school portraiture sort of feel, but in the real world it just looks like she slept in it. There’s a minor trend toward very traditional (read: 18th and 19th Century) womenswear elements in high fashion lately and while we’re not opposed to them in theory, we don’t think they translate well to modernity without all of the things these designs originally required to work, such as corsets and panierres or hoop skirts, but also all of the trim and accessories and jewelry that went with looks like these. Of course we’re not arguing that she should be done up like Scarlett O’Hara here, but as it is, the design makes her look half-dressed. It just doesn’t work.
