We were pretty sure that Wicked star Cynthia Erivo was not going to disappoint us on Oscar night. All indications were (you’ll pardon the term) green for her serving up one of the best looks of the night. What we didn’t know was that she was going to do it twice.
IN LOUIS VUITTON
We’ll admit it: we gasped. We may be tired of the theme dressing and we may have a years-long dislike of big-ass bows on grown-ass women, but this is just so stunning that it resists any of our bitchy attempts to nitpick. It’s pure drama, which is her stock in trade, and it was refreshing to see a real ballgown silhouette on a night when so many of the gowns were columns or body con. The emerald green is a gorgeous shade and the whole dress provides a perfect backdrop for the manicure and jewelry, which is not always something her style choices manage to do.
IN VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
And yes, we gasped a second time. What we love most about this gown is that it has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with her character. It’s a complete tonal shift from everything she’s worn in the last year; a sharp break from the relentless promotion and campaign, allowing her simply to revel in the performance she was delivering. Just a beautiful, romantic, highly dramatic design that stunned onstage.
