Well how about that? Congratulations to Anora star Mikey Madison, who inadvertently re-enacted the plot of The Substance by snatching an Oscar trophy out of Demi Moore’s hands at the last possible second. There’s already a narrative forming that the Academy always rewards young actresses, but a ten-second glance at the list of actresses who won Oscars in the last 15 years puts the lie to that one. As we noted in our podcast last week, the Academy does love itself a “hooker with a heart of gold” storyline and has a long history of rewarding women who play sex workers. But our point isn’t to suggest this was unearned on her part, just a bit of an upset for the prognosticators. One thing we can say we got right: our prediction that she was likely to show up in something strapless and retro.

It’s pure Audrey realness, inspired by the 1956 Bal à Paris Dior Haute Couture gown, and she looks lovely in it, although we tend to think Audrey homages are a little overdone at this point. Still, she’d have wanted to position herself as an ingenue after making her name playing a foul-mouthed erotic dancer, so we don’t blame her for going this route. The necklace is lovely, but the hair looks too casual and underdone to our eyes.
