Timothee Chalamet stopped by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival to do two things: 1) pick up the Arlington Artist of the Year Award, and 2) Reminds us that 1996 is never truly far away.

Honestly? It’s a pretty cute look. Granted, it looks incredibly dated to our rheumy, ancient eyes, but to any Zoomer, this looks as fresh as a spring daisy. One thing we’ve noticed in our decades of fashion commentary is that as soon as a generation reaches adulthood, they start bringing back looks that they saw their parents wear in old pictures. Boomers (the ’40s craze), Gen-X (the Woodstock craze), and Millennials (the That ’70s Show craze) all did it, now it’s this generation’s turn, which is why you’re seeing things like low-rise jeans and a thousand think pieces about Kendrick’s bootcuts. Yes, he’s technically probably a Millennial himself, but his appeal clearly lies with people a few years younger than him, which is true for most young celebrities. Now, do we think this is appropriate for a red carpet industry event where you’re receiving an award? No, not at all. Not even a little bit. On the other hand, we’re not in charge of handing out these awards and dressing this way clearly hasn’t prevented him from winning it. While we think he would have been better in something a little dressier for this event, we feel like the sands are shifting in terms of what to expect on red carpets from young stars.
